H-h-h-h-hancock's Half Hour

Recommended Posts

Fenella used the old distraction technique on us as far as Carry On stars go. One of Hancock every year.....

Anyway, bringing the list forward:

Ray Galton (b. 1930)
Alan Simpson (b. 1929; d. 2017)

Andree Melly (b. 1932)

Warren Mitchell (b. 1926; d. 2015)

Rolf Harris (b. 1930)

Burt Kwouk (b. 1930; d. 2016)

Anne Reid (b. 1935)

Liz Fraser (b. 1930; d. 2018)

Sad to hear Fraser has gone.Much underrated as an actress. Nearly mentioned her in the Barbara Windsor thread when I was talking about Carry On Stars.

I did mention Ray Galton last year as a worthy pick for 2018.  The last writer and main link to Steptoe and Son. RIP anyway to a great comedy writing talent.

Sad to hear about Galton passing away.

We've lost a true legend.

Many people praise the actors or comedians, but without a good scriptwriter they wouldn't be half the talent they are.

That's pretty much all the great comedy writers from that era dead and gone now. Jimmy Perry, David Croft etc .A sad end to a very funny era !

YW, been pointed out to me that Peter Goodwright is still above ground, so should be on the list.

Assuming it is the same Peter Goodwright. Appreciation Society doesn't include the usual link to Wiki or IMDB. Perhaps that is why I was shy of including him.

In that case, you could add in Lilian Grassom (yeah, like who?) (b. 1939) for whom I can't find a date of death and Michael Anderson (a boy actor who appeared as a Christmas orphan - might even be his only role).

Grassom was also known as Grasson and Verner.

I 'think' she married a James Verner , there's an eBay pic of engagement.

She may have remarried again so good luck with your search .

Andree Melly died 31 January 2020: http://announcements.telegraph.co.uk/deaths/239696/quitak

IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0578154/

Looks like her older hubby Oscar Quitak survived her. Surely a full obit will follow.

Just a Minute regular too. One of the very few people to go the full minute on a topic without a single interruption for hesitation, repetition, or deviation. More than once iirc.

Apparently the first ever to go one minute without H,R or D. Also in the much delayed obituary in today's paper, she once chaired Just a Minute in an all woman show which was the only show Nicholas Parsons did not chair until Gyles Brandreth chaired two shows a few months ago. Also it stated that only 3 women have appeared in more shows - probably Sheila Hancock is one?

Just Anne Reid to go after Rolf Harris' death here:

Ray Galton (b. 1930; d. 2018)
Alan Simpson (b. 1929; d. 2017)

Andree Melly (b. 1932; d. 2020)

Warren Mitchell (b. 1926; d. 2015)

Rolf Harris (b. 1930; d. 2023)

Burt Kwouk (b. 1930; d. 2016)

Anne Reid (b. 1935)

Liz Fraser (b. 1930; d. 2018)

Pretty decent longevity in that sample. Certainly better than the likes of Sid James, Hattie Jacques and Tony Hancock himself.
