I suppose it's a hazard with any joke that some will miss it or even simply don't think it's funny (which is perfectly fine, humour is after all subjective). Having said that with this particular stab at humour you need to know Smokie's most famous track and crucially the send-ups associated with it otherwise it's not a joke at all. But as with most jokes having to explain it defeats the purpose. I even removed everything bar the band name from the quotes so it scans properly. One can but try - and sometimes miss. Ah well. Clorox Bleachman 2,400 Posted October 18 Went to see Caravan Palace at the O2 Academy on Wednesday night. Got a little sidetracked when I came home and my phone blew up with "oh my God, did you hear the news". My best friend's boyfriend asked me in March if I wanted to go with him and his friend. He's from down south and I'd only met him once at that point, so I thought it would be a good bonding activity. Anyway, he's since permanently moved to Glasgow and we get on great so that's irrelevant now. Show was pretty good, wish I were standing though. This was at St Andrew’s Hall in the D, which I’ve never known as having a bad sound; so blaming their sound guy, who we were ‘advising’ what needed doing but he ignored us. Clorox Bleachman 2,400 Posted November 8 Today was the first day of Iceland Airwaves festival in Reykjavik. I got my money's worth by seeing 5 acts. In order of greatness: 5. GDRN (pronounced "Gudrun") at Hafnarhús Art Museum – Icelandic-language singer. The first of several gorgeous people to grace the stage. Unfortunately I was stuck behind a couple of grey-haired waterproof trouser wearers who were having a natter. Her crowdwork needs some work. 4. Une Misère at Iðnó – local metal band. It's metal. It all sounds the same to me, but I wanted to go to one metal gig. The singer was really hot and I liked it when he asked the crowd if they were enjoying Iceland (woooo!!), only for his response to be "why? It's fucking shit". There was of course a mosh pit. It stank in there. 3. Joy (Anonymous) at Iðnó – London funky house duo. Kind of the opposite of Une Misère if you think about it. Their setup consisted of some computers on a shoogly metal table. I finally managed to get close to the stage, right in front of a fat subwoofer (yes dad, I wore earplugs). I and about 30 people at the front turned into sweaty messes. 2. Ravyn Lenae at Art Museum – R&B singer from Chicago. I managed to secure a barricade spot for the first time ever!! She pointed directly at me and sang at me a few times, and I got nervous because she's one of the most stunning people I've seen in person. 1. Magdalena Bay at Art Museum – American duo with eclectic influences. I needed to pee but I was not letting go of that damn barricade. Again, why are all these artists hot‽ They played their new album Imaginal Disk from front to back and nothing else. It's one of my favourite albums of the decade and I knew every word. I wasn't sure I'd make it until the last minute, because I've been feeling worse for wear since flying back from Iceland. Fortunately this was quite an easy-going gig. Rachel has a great Billie Eilish-ish voice and clearly has a loyal fanbase of young women. He was quite good, although Milton Jones and Tim Vine (both of whom I have seen in the last couple of years) were more to my taste. He was unlucky in that a long and moving story got interrupted when 2 people in the audience had a row with the words 'fuck off' being very audible. Bishop immediately made them put the lights up, swore at the offenders and wouldn't carry on until they had been evicted. Understandable, but it killed the atmosphere during a long section which involved talking about the death of his mother from dementia. Given the number of F-bombs deployed and the occasional groping for words I did wonder whether he had had a pint or two of Dutch courage before he went on. Presented Sharlene with an award of sort ‘cos she beat her guitarist at flicking the plectrum (dropping it and kicking it up and catching it again). Flood was one of the very first albums I ever bought back in 1990, so when I saw they were touring the album again I thought I should go.
