En Passant 3,741 Posted October 13 I take no pride in this, but to those posting facepalms? Look again - it's a damn joke. I know who smokie are and what's more, I appear to know their tracks (especially that famous one and critically variations thereof) well enough...

I suppose it's a hazard with any joke that some will miss it or even simply don't think it's funny (which is perfectly fine, humour is after all subjective). Having said that with this particular stab at humour you need to know Smokie's most famous track and crucially the send-ups associated with it otherwise it's not a joke at all. But as with most jokes having to explain it defeats the purpose. I even removed everything bar the band name from the quotes so it scans properly. One can but try - and sometimes miss. Ah well. And I think it possibly did miss you and others (which isn't unreasonable, you'd need to be a certain age after all and know about that track) and you are just backing up. Ultimately I really don't care much one way or the other in the end it was just a joke - you don't get it, fine. But facepalming a joke you don't like? Meh, just ignore them if you don't like them. Toast 16,132 Posted October 16 Coincidentally the latest round of Kill Or Save has just begun (90s Number 3s) and it includes Smokie ft. Roy Chubby Brown- Living Next Door to Alice (Who The Fuck is Alice?)
Phantom 2,533 Posted October 16 I'm working tonight for T Bone Burnett There's no photography or recording permitted during the show. But, I managed to sneak one photo during the soundcheck.
Phantom 2,533 Posted October 18 A stressful night working for American Authors To begin with, their Square app wasn't working. It was close to half way during the show that we finally got it rectified. A fairly low turnout of about 100 people. But they put one a good show
Clorox Bleachman 2,410 Posted October 18 Went to see Caravan Palace at the O2 Academy on Wednesday night. Got a little sidetracked when I came home and my phone blew up with "oh my God, did you hear the news". My best friend's boyfriend asked me in March if I wanted to go with him and his friend. He's from down south and I'd only met him once at that point, so I thought it would be a good bonding activity. Anyway, he's since permanently moved to Glasgow and we get on great so that's irrelevant now. Show was pretty good, wish I were standing though. This is the furthest I've been from the stage at a gig in 2 years.
Sir Creep 7,070 Posted October 19 KMFDM’s 40th anniversary tour last night. The song selection and performance was fine, and we met all the band members, but the sound wasn’t very good. This was at St Andrew’s Hall in the D, which I’ve never known as having a bad sound; so blaming their sound guy, who we were ‘advising’ what needed doing but he ignored us. His gig was moved there because ticket sales were absolute shite and he wouldn't have filled a quarter of the Corn Exchange building, the usual music/entertainment venue in our town. She recounted the time, not too long ago, when Andy Parsons also had to move from the main venue to the small one ( poor ticket sales again) and how utterly fucking awkward it was watching him die on stage. Just thought you might be fascinated by that, eh.... Joly's touring an amusing travelogue book based on visiting sites linked to conspiracy theories and the like - like Roswell, it's an odd collision of comedy and the paranormal, sort of a stab for Danny Robins' action and/or being a kind of Bill Bryson figure. Read it recently. Not bad, but not particularly distinctive either, so I'm not surprised it isn't packing them in.
Clorox Bleachman 2,410 Posted November 8 Today was the first day of Iceland Airwaves festival in Reykjavik. I got my money's worth by seeing 5 acts. In order of greatness: 5. GDRN (pronounced "Gudrun") at Hafnarhús Art Museum – Icelandic-language singer. The first of several gorgeous people to grace the stage. Unfortunately I was stuck behind a couple of grey-haired waterproof trouser wearers who were having a natter. Her crowdwork needs some work. 4. Une Misère at Iðnó – local metal band. It's metal. It all sounds the same to me, but I wanted to go to one metal gig. The singer was really hot and I liked it when he asked the crowd if they were enjoying Iceland (woooo!!), only for his response to be "why? It's fucking shit". There was of course a mosh pit. It stank in there. 3. Joy (Anonymous) at Iðnó – London funky house duo. Kind of the opposite of Une Misère if you think about it. Their setup consisted of some computers on a shoogly metal table. I finally managed to get close to the stage, right in front of a fat subwoofer (yes dad, I wore earplugs). I and about 30 people at the front turned into sweaty messes. 2. Ravyn Lenae at Art Museum – R&B singer from Chicago. I managed to secure a barricade spot for the first time ever!! She pointed directly at me and sang at me a few times, and I got nervous because she's one of the most stunning people I've seen in person. 1. Magdalena Bay at Art Museum – American duo with eclectic influences. I needed to pee but I was not letting go of that damn barricade. Again, why are all these artists hot‽ They played their new album Imaginal Disk from front to back and nothing else. It's one of my favourite albums of the decade and I knew every word. It was everything. They're everything. Today was one of the best days of my life.
Phantom 2,533 Posted November 9 Got to see The Dickies last night in Minneapolis at The Cabooze. I hadn't seen them in 30 years. I was working the merch table for the first opening band. They had a lot of energy. Playing mostly the old stuff. Both Leonard and Stan very kindly autographed a couple of albums for me
Clorox Bleachman 2,410 Posted November 12 Rachel Chinouriri at Queen Margaret Union in foggy Glasgow. In orange, with her opener Leonie Biney (in turquoise). I wasn't sure I'd make it until the last minute, because I've been feeling worse for wear since flying back from Iceland. Fortunately this was quite an easy-going gig. Rachel has a great Billie Eilish-ish voice and clearly has a loyal fanbase of young women. I did laugh when she asked the audience if anyone had been to Hereford (350 miles away) and the room fell silent.
Great Uncle Bulgaria 1,282 Posted November 15 Unsure if stand up counts as a gig but the man himself described it as one so I thought it must be. Anyway, saw John Bishop (as in professional scouser, doer of difficult things for charity, comedian and of Dr Who for a while). GAB's idea not mine. He was quite good, although Milton Jones and Tim Vine (both of whom I have seen in the last couple of years) were more to my taste. He was unlucky in that a long and moving story got interrupted when 2 people in the audience had a row with the words 'fuck off' being very audible. Bishop immediately made them put the lights up, swore at the offenders and wouldn't carry on until they had been evicted. Understandable, but it killed the atmosphere during a long section which involved talking about the death of his mother from dementia. Given the number of F-bombs deployed and the occasional groping for words I did wonder whether he had had a pint or two of Dutch courage before he went on. Overall, not great but reasonably good, certainly better than I expected.

Presented Sharlene with an award of sort ‘cos she beat her guitarist at flicking the plectrum (dropping it and kicking it up and catching it again). I wonder how much he got paid for that 30 second appearance.
BuffaloPhil 926 Posted Monday at 14:52 Saw They Might Be Giants in Bristol on Saturday night. Flood was one of the very first albums I ever bought back in 1990, so when I saw they were touring the album again I thought I should go. Was a very entertaining gig even though I was so far up in the back I could hardly see them.

Clorox Bleachman 2,410 Posted Friday at 03:31 Snow Strippers, one again at Queen Margaret Union in Glasgow. It was -5°C outside, but no snow. Up-and-coming electronic duo from Detroit. Kind of the perfect culmination of influences for me, as an enjoyer of trance music, the 'indie sleaze revival' thing happening this year, and an obscure genre called witch house that I know way too much about because I was on the wrong side of the internet when I was 13. Extremely loud, almost non-stop, tightly packed, lots of jumping up and down. I love my hair being half way down my back now because it just flies fucking everywhere. The folk behind me, maybe not so much. No in-focus photos to share because it was so intense.
