Sheila Rossall (Infamous Sick Girl From The Seventies)

Recommended Posts

Ironic eh? Despite being about to die years ago she lived long enough to see the likes of Jeremy Kyle parading a slew of those who could be argued to have followed her example.

Did you ever bunk in with anyone else famous?

Cheers Bob, we knew that. Thanks for reminding us of that awesome archive of musical mortality. Was re-acquainting myself with it the other day, checking out - amongst others - the death of Dinky Diamond, former Sparks drummer and one utterly sad and messed up individual.

TRIBUTES were today paid to a Blackpool singer whose career was cut short by a rare and crippling disease.

Sheila Rossall, who was lead vocalist with 1970s group New Pickettywitch, has died in a nursing home.

The 57-year-old, who grew up in Grange Park, had been ill for more than two decades.

Surely the correct response to the post is

'Already reported two posts above'.

And three posts above that. And 16 posts above that. Her posthumous deathlist activity outweighs her cultural significance by a good 28.7%. The site's first up when googling her; even Clive Dunn can't equal that.

Actually Sheila Rossall was really ill!! My mum was the lady who took it upon herself to raise the money to get her to Texas in the first place. Along with her friend and my dad, they did all the groundwork and found the specialist doctors themselves. I was only 7 at the time, but remember some of the things that happened. Basically for a good few years the saga went on until it nearly destroyed my family and our finances. There was a newspaper article slating my Mum which was completely lies and we sued for slander and won. I don't know the details being young at the time. But we went on holiday for a month after so must have been quite a serious law suit. There are a few speculations that Sheila was faking it. My Mum was just a kind person who wanted to help her, but towards the end Sheila turned on her too :(

The last we heard of her ten years later, she was living a fairly normal life and managing her condition. Depression or whatever it was, trust me those allergic reactions were real, I saw it for myself.

hi, yes I remember all this. At the time it was quite a news item on HTV-West (Bristol). Ran for ages. I remember the lady who was in charge of the fund(your mother?) being interviewed on a number of occasions. I think towards the end even she was fed up with the whole charade and wished she could have been elsewhere. Rossall clearly had psychiatric problems but I suppose in those days it didn't have the empathy that it deserves.

Aye, 2015 is much more enlightened and sensitive types like us pour love on the likes of Ms Rossall, right?

You might not know the name (and to be honest I'm not actually sure it is her name) but if you're a certain age you'll definitely remember the story...

Sheila Rossall was "the girl who [was] allergic to the 20th century" and swapped headlines every week in the News Of The World with Lena Zavaroni as newsworthy ill girls. Formerly the singer of New Pickettywitch - not to be confused with Pickettywitch, though to this day Polly Browne gets asked about her health due to this story - she was last heard of living in an oxygen tank in Texas, with not long to live because the money for her treatment was running out.

Whatever happened to her? Did she get better? Did she die? There were rumours that she was a fake but nothing was ever proven. The net has scant information about her, and most of that is people wondering whatever happened to her (including a fair amount of posts from me, because I'm sad like that <_< ).

Opening up the gauntlet here - anyone?

Yes she was real and yes bless her she did die in 2006 and her brother is very much alive and well and could easily read this, try and think before you write potentially upsetting comments which friends and family might accidentally stumble across as i did
