I think Moss is one of those that falls into a generation gap awareness. I'd imagine between 1961-1974, she was extremely well known, but as she fell out (rather spectactulary too) of the limelight, she became forgotten. I've never heard of her, for the simple reason that by the time I started watching television (1980 onwards), she'd already disappeared off our TV screens. I'd heard of her, and Corrie sacked her the year before I was born (though the Street and I are connected by the fact I was born on the day of it's 15th Anniversary episode. In fact, my mother squeezed me out at 7.20pm to make sure she didn't miss it). But that was only because she recorded for Joe Meek, and I have her tracks on some Meek compilation CDs. maryportfuncity 10,585 Posted October 6, 2006 John Glover a great of non-league football, if such exist. Formerly of Welling United and Maidstone United and capped by England's semi-pro ranks in the mid eighties. There's a message board strand I found on the Maidstone site. umm......... MPFC, is this really a NEAR miss? I don't even think he musters enough fame for the "Not Famous but.."! I love me non-league footy, but even I've never heard of him. Are you sure you're not Iain in disguise? The whole point about Iain is that no name could ever disguise his very unique nature. Re John Glover, I did say 'if such exist' re the non-league footbal great. The thing with Glover was he was also a successful businessman and - therefore - unwilling to chance full-time footy. He repeatedly turned down offers from credible league clubs. He also earned a few caps on those infrequent occasions when England fielded an 'International' squad drawn from non-league. What I guess I'm saying is that he if he'd gone another route he could've been a guy who played 300 games for Millwall, or summat. In which case he'd just about qualify here. TheProfessor 0 Posted October 7, 2006 John "Buck" O'Neil, Died yesterday at 94. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/base...writethru.1053/ He was a famous Negro Leagues player, the first prominent black Major League scout, and the first black manager in Major League Baseball... And still you bloody Brits won't have any idea who he is. He was famous in Kansas City and across the country. I feel honored to have met the man. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buck_O'Neil

But you bloody Yanks haven't heard of Ferenc Puskas, or have even heard of the sport was a legend in, so methinks the scores are tied.
Banshees Scream 110 Posted October 7, 2006 And still you bloody Brits won't have any idea who he is. You can't talk Baseball on these forums. It's like talking to the wall. The UK really needs to become apart of American sports. Canada has done it, Japan probably will, there sport is just so boring. It's all football. And something called cricket. I don't even know what that is. That might be the game of the week at the nursing homes.
maryportfuncity 10,585 Posted October 7, 2006 Been waiting to see an obit without success but I heard that Edgar Stern is dead. Hardly a household name but arguably Britain's most famous blacksmith, he'd earned a British Empire Medal and was a FWCF (Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Farriers). Lived and worked in Kent but people went from all over the world - Australia, Canada, Cumbria etc - to train with him. If he'd ever given in to some media offers he'd have been another Fred Dibnah. Well the Los Angeles Dodgers are only one game away from being eliminated. Talking NL the Mets are going to the championship series. But can anyone believe the Yankees! Joe Torre doesn't deserve this. George must have some headache. Personally I would like to see a Subway Series this year, but if A - Rod don't start doing what his quarter billion dollar f****n contract is, and if Randy can't beat a young team like this, it won't happen.
