African Leaders - Despots and Democratic

Recommended Posts

Col. Sam Inukoba, a leader of the All Progressive Congress in Bayelsa State (Sudan) and former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party has died a month shy of 66, of 'food poisoning'. After his recent party switch he probably had a few enemies.

With regards to Jammeh, the same website which reported his ill health in the link above ran a story yesterday that he had narrowly escaped death after he was attacked by his pet lion. In 2011 the very same site also reported that he was dying of pancreatic cancer and last month they raised concerns about his sex addiction.

Yahya Jammeh? Surely that's one for the 'what a monicker' thread.

Hehe, yes, African politics is a bit of a bloodsport... There's so little restraint it looks like parody to us. And it reminds me of the time an opponent of then-presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria said he had prostate cancer, asthma and dementia and "wouldn't last long in office". Only then Buhari won and now the old, corrupt regime is running away from justice, including the oil minister you mentioned, because Buhari means business.

The situation in Gambia becomes even more complicated because just a few days later, Yahya Jammeh banned female genital mutilation. It's apparently a hugely progressive policy stance there, so maybe there was a truthful leak, or some fabrication, from inside his own camp. The régime hadn't exactly been known for it's progressive policies before.

Niger’s opposition presidential candidate Hama Amadou has for the second time in less than a week been hospitalized. The 66-year-old former Prime Minister “fainted and was taken for first aid at the Filingué district hospital,” said his personal physician Harouna Yacouba. Dr. Yacouba said the jailed opposition leader needs “proper care” explaining that the Filingué center lacked adequate equipment. Amadou, who is being held for alleged child trafficking is said to be unwell although it is not clear what condition he is suffering.

You know the French back in the day had a punctuation mark, which was a sort of upside down question mark which marked sarcasm or irony. We could do with it again these days.

Former Kenyan first lady Lucy Kibaki, famous for her charity work and her quick temper, has died aged 76.

Kibaki, often referred to as "Mama Lucy," died while undergoing treatment at the Bupa Cromwell Hospital.

The statement did not say what Kibaki was suffering from but she registered at the hospital earlier this year for what the family said was a routine check-up. AShe was married to Kenya's third president Mwai Kibaki, who was in power from 2002-2013 and who survives her.

Is he "ill ill" or ill in the way Vojislav Šešelj and Yahya Jammeh seem to be every few years?

Dubious African leaders are only ever ill if they say they're fit as a fiddle and running marathons.

Hissen Habre former President of Chad has been sentenced to death

Guess that makes TODAY'S news all the more interesting.

Chad's former dictator Hissene Habre raises his hand during court proceedings in Dakar, Senegal, Monday, May 30, 2016. Judge Gberdao Gustave Kam declared Habre guilty and sentenced him to life in prison for crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture, in a packed courtroom, Monday.

I'm not versed in Chad's litigation system.... But something is askew. Anyway he won't last two years in a jail full of people HE out in there!

President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria is currently in hospital in London, either suffering from an ear infection, or having being diagnosed with brain cancer, according to wildly conflicting reports in the Nigerian press.

The other rumour is he is suffering from neither, and is instead engaging in surreptitious meetings with Niger Delta militants.

The President of Malawi, Bingu wa Mutharika, is in a French hospital recovering from a "hernia operation."This article, published in June, suggests his problems are a little more serious.

"The cancer has spread so much that it is life theatening," a source privy to the President's health disclosed.

Says here he has the internal organs of a 30-year old. I'm guessing a 30-year old captive tiger maybe.

If you noticed though, sir creep quoted something from 2007, when mr mutharika was still alive. Maybe it was a mistake.
