Not sure if bishops are worth mentioning but at first I thought these guys are all cardinals..

Apart from the catholic church itself dying pretty quickly in The Netherlands (3.7 million people registred as catholics, but only about 100k church visitors each sunday and less than 7.000 kids baptised each year, all declining about 10% a year) i saw a picture of the dutch bishops visiting the pope last week.

1280x720a.jpg

The bisshop in the wheelchair is Harrie Smeets, who has been suffering from brain cancer since last year and won't recover. Bisshop Jan Liesen  was unable to attend because he was himself being treated for cancer. The other bishops did send him a postcard (not a joke)

And he's only 62 years old. Ofcourse the robes, wheelchair and his weight don't make him look younger but I would have thought him to be mid-70's.

Was tempted momentarily for Alt Obits but then I remembered Hulka tends to reject bishops!

Chrysostomos II's funeral was held a week ago. Some images:

patriarchs.jpg.771f1002ad31f51f582cc3e278a4689d.jpg

There's the President of Cyprus and Ieronymos II Archbishop of Athens and All Greece. Not sure who the two others are.

As far as I know Anastasios of Albania, Ilia II of Georgia and many others were absent.

However, Bartholomew I of Constantinople was there and looked pretty rough:

bart.thumb.jpg.a96110f4b6fb86a68b7cc192af35ad85.jpg

As the longtime (since 1991) leader of the second-largest Christian church and with atleast two somewhat recent hospitalisations, slowly becoming threadworthy in my opinion.

Pretty sure we haven't had an exorcist death since.

So here we go with a Guardian obit for Jeremy Davies, co-founder of the International Association Of Exorcists: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/dec/08/father-jeremy-davies

A few still alive:

Emmanuel Milingo is 92, very ill and should've died a few years ago, no idea how he's still going, but on borrowed time...

Charles H. Kraft - Christian speaker, anthropologist, exorcist, founder-leader of "Deep Healing Ministries"...Obese, 90 and rarely makes appearances nowadays.

"The Real Exorcist" Bob Larson is only 78, but his fame peaked a while ago and now he runs a YouTube account with videos such as "Prince Harry & Meghan, Witchcraft Power Couple?" (actual title of one of them) that get around 3000 views each.

Anas Hajjar, Imam, leader of Helsinki's Finnish Islamic Congregation 2010-2022 and probably the most known Islamic leader in Finland, dead at 52/53. A bit suprised by how young he was, thought he'd have been atleast a decade older.

A moderate according to himself and compared to many, for example his predecessor, the controversial Khodr Khaled Chebab (1962-2010) but said that gays are sinners, etc. Also appeared in YLE TV1 show Muslimielämää in 2010, a Finnish version of BBC's Make Me a Muslim.

Of course...And meanwhile, Kallistos has been in his "final hours" for around four days now.

New character to the Pravrajika Bhaktiprana/Sri Sarada Math saga: Pravrajika Amalaprana, General Secretary of the Sri Sarada Math and one of the "ruling trio" with Anandapranaji and Bhaktiprana. From the Math's website:

On 28th July night, Pravrajika Amalaprana, the General Secretary was admitted to the Ramakrishna Mission Sevapratishthan and put on a ventilator and other emergency measures in the ICU. She was diagnosed with pneumonia, heart failure and kidney problem. As she responded to the treatment on the 3rd of August, she was put off the ventilator and kept on bipap, which helped her to maintain oxygen saturation. On the next day i.e. on 4th, she was shifted to a cabin. Though still very weak she was discharged from the hospital on the 9th August and returned to the Math at Dakshineswar where she is kept under close medical observation and care. Recovery will take some time.

Tough people these elderly religious leaders.

Pravrajika Bhaktiprana finally dead at 102.

Thought she was immortal, she'd been wheelchairbound and frail for more than a decade.

Not to be confused with Pravrajika Anandapranaji (was hospitalised with pneumonia for a month in January and discharged in "critical condition") and Pravrajika Amalaprana (tons of health problems, on ventilator with kidney problems and heart failure in July).

Bhaktiprana was the President of the Math, Anandapranaji is the VP and Amalaprana is the General Secretary. I wonder if it'll be one of those two who'll succeed her.

Addold Mossin is (somehow) 103 today.

First Ayatollah/Maraji to die since September, but there are quite many above 90:

1. Grand Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani (20 Feb 1919-31 Jan 2022) Secretary of the Guardian Council 1980-1985, once issued a fatwa calling for the death of a rapper.

2. Grand Ayatollah Sheikh Hossein Wahid Khorasani (1 Jan 1921-) "Most learned Shia authority alive" and critic of Khamenei. With Noori-Hamedani, the last Ayatollah/Maraji born in Qajar Persia/Qajar Iran/The Sublime State of Iran that stopped existing in 1925.

3. Shamsodin Mujtahidi Najafi (17 April 1923-27 Feb 2022)

4. Grand Ayatollah Hossein Noori-Hamedani (1925-) Hardliner and a total piece of shit.

-. Sheikh Ayatollah Ali Tehrani (22 April 1926-19 October 2022) Theologian, critic of Khamenei's rule - but also his brother-in-law.

5. Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Muhammad-Sadiq Husayni Rohani (16 July 1926-)

Before the celebration, it must be pointed out Rohani was a longtime dissident and critic of the regime.

Shirazi is playing the tough guy part as he proposed social media to be banned in the country.

Jannati and Shirazi will both be 96 in a few months. Won't be sad deaths but I think they could live a few years more.

The original list has ayatollahs, maraji aged 90-101, they seem pretty tough. Here's the younger ones aged 80-90 -

-. Abdollah Javadi-Amoli (5 May 1933-) Marja'. One of the "builders" of modern Iran, but a critic of nuclear weapons and Iran's banking system. Lost his wife around April and it seems to have been a blow to his health.

-. Grand Ayatollah Hossein Mazaheri Isfahani (16 November 1933-) Seems to be some kind of an éminence grise who Khamenei respects a lot. Was in intensive care following a surgery in 2016 but recovered.

-. Ayatollah Sheikh Zaynolabideen Ghorbani (1933-) Student of Khomeini, Noori-Hamedani and others. Has held titles since Khomeini came to power and still a member of the Assembly of Experts, faightful servant of whoever is in charge.

-. Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Ebrahim Jannaati (1933-) One of Iran's most liberal Ayatollahs.

-. Ayatollah Seyed Mohammad Shahcheraghi (10 June 1934-) Current member of the Assembly of Experts. Pro-government but not the worst guy out of the Ayatollahs. Mostly retired in August last year.

-. Hojatoleslam/Ayatollah Hassan Sane'i (1934-2023) Fundamentalist hardliner asshole and longtime member of the Member of Expediency Discernment Council. Has called for the execution of Salman Rushdie and even offered a bounty for it. Collapsed in 2016 and has been frail and mostly wheelchairbound since.

-. Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Mohammad Dastgheib Shirazi (14 March 1935-) Still active.

-. Ayatollah Morteza Moghtadai (12 October 1935-) Was against protests in 2009, now isn't that much.

-. Ayatollah Sayyid Mohammad Khamenei (25 December 1935-) Ali Khamenei's fat older brother. Survived an assasination attempt in 1982.

-. Mirza Yadollah Duzduzani (1935-) Minor name with no English wikipedia page

-. Ayatollah Abolghasem Wafi Yazdi (1935-) Assembly of Experts member.

-. Grand Ayatollah Shamsodin Vaezi (1936-) Iraqi, as far as I know not in the best health

-. Grand Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Ahmed Qassim (1 January 1937/1941-) Bahrain

-. Mehdi Karroubi (26 September 1937-) Under house arrest for around 11 years now.

-. Reza Ostadi Moghaddam (29 September 1937-) Assembly of Experts member

-. Seyyed Mohsen Kharazi (1937-) One of Khamenei's decrepit pals

-. Grand Ayatollah Kadhim Husayni al-Haeri (1938-) Became the first ever Marja to completely resign from his position in August. Seems very ill.

-. Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Gerami Qomi (1938-) Not ill as far as I know but relatively rarely makes public appearances.

-. Ayatollah Hashem Hashemzadeh Herisi (1938-)

-. Mohammad Mehdi Khalesi (1938-) Iraq, minor name with no English wikipedia page

-. The Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei (19 April 1939-) Health problems widely documented here

-. Grand Ayatollah Ali Asghar Rahimi Azad (1939-) Relatively minor name.

-. Ghodratollah Alikhani (1939-) Former Member of Parliament.

-. Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Shafiei (1940-) Was gravely ill with a lung disease in 2020.

-. Grand Ayatollah Yasubeddin Rastegar Jooybari (1940-) Khamenei critic who has been arrested multiple times.

-. Grand Ayatollah Mohammad Mohammad Taher Aleshobair Khaqani (1940-) Iraqi, Relatively minor name.

-.  Sheikh Khalil Qudsi Mehr Tabrezi (1940-) Minor name

-. Hafiz Riaz Hussain Najafi (1941-) Pakistan

-. Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husayni al-Shirazi (20 August 1942-) Clashed with the government and Khamenei multiple times

-. Grand Ayatollah Sheikh Basheer Hussain Najafi (1942-) Pakistan/Iraq Anti-ISIS ayatollah

-. Sayyid Mohammad Mousavi Khoeiniha (1942/1945-) spiritual leader of the Muslim Student Followers of the Imam's Line who led the hostage taking of American embassy staff on 4 November 1979. Has been against Khamenei multiple times.

Many of these are also former DDP picks, most by a certain unmentioned team that picked a ton of random Ayatollahs in 2021.

Not suprised - he looked very frail in October when he met the Dalai Lama. (The only thing I'm suprised is that he's the first person to die from that list)

As far as I know his predecessor Khensur Lungri Namgyel (ལུང་རིག་རྣམ་རྒྱལ) is still alive and 95. He lives in the Thar Deu Ling temple in France, Île-de-France, Seine-et-Marne, Chelles that he founded in 1980.
