John Bai Ningxian (wiki), retired Auxiliary Bishop of Sanyuan, who tuned 100 a few days ago.

Catholic Hierarchy have now updated the profile for John Bai Ningxian to say he's deceased. Likely he was never a centenarian, and probably died years ago.

Also Julius Jia Zhiguo (wiki), who made the news after being arrested in 2009 (and released in 2010), has since died.

EDIT: he was arrested again in September 2020, so must have died in 2021 or 2022.

Antipope Michael, David Bawden, American conclavist claimant to the papacy from 1990 to 2022 who estimated he had "around 30 solid followers" in 2009, dead at 62. He claimed that there had not been a legitimate pope since the death of Pius XII in 1958 until he "became pope".

2010 VICE article: https://www.vice.com/da/article/meet-the-antipope

An antipope (Latin: antipapa) is a person who makes a significant and substantial attempt to occupy the position of Bishop of Rome and leader of the Catholic Church in opposition to the legitimately elected pope.

One of the most known antipopes of the modern era, some others include Canadian Antipope
Gregory XVII (1928-2011), US Antipope Pius XIII Lucian Pulvermacher (1918-2009) and the Palmarian popes, notably founder of the Palmarian Christian Church Clemente Domínguez y Gómez Gregory XVII (1946-2005)

If a Pope and an Antipope shake hands, will there be a massive explosion resulting the deaths of everyone on Earth? :D

Carl Kabat, who went into hospice care a couple of months back, has died at 88.  Fingers crossed he somehow gets a QO for DbN and Windy City.

Ayatollah Mohsen Mojtahed Shabestari dead at 83 or 84:

https://www.tasnimnews.com/fa/news/1400/08/26/2609813/آیت-الله-محسن-مجتهد-شبستری-درگذشت

Assembly of Experts member since 1983, longtime parliament member in Iran. First Ayatollah/Maraji to die since September, but there are quite many above 90:

1. Grand Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani (20 Feb 1919-31 Jan 2022) Secretary of the Guardian Council 1980-1985, once issued a fatwa calling for the death of a rapper.

2. Grand Ayatollah Sheikh Hossein Wahid Khorasani (1 Jan 1921-) "Most learned Shia authority alive" and critic of Khamenei.

3. Shamsodin Mujtahidi Najafi (17 April 1923-)

4. Grand Ayatollah Hossein Noori-Hamedani (1925-) Hardliner and a total piece of shit.

...

Shamsodin Mujtahidi Najafi (Persian wiki) died at 98 in February/March. Seems to have been a DDP pick last year.

I think this Tweet implies he died Feb 27, going off what Google translate tells me.

Fun fact: If you Google "Shamsodin Mujtahidi Najafi", the DDP is the second result.

Facebook post reporting the death of Robert L. Backman, at the age of 100.

The oldest authority in the Mormon Church is now its President, Russell M. Nelson, who turns 98 in a few months.

Russell M. Nelson became the longest living Mormon Apostle in history yesterday, overtaking the lifespan of David B. Haight (1906–2004).

Brazilian sect lead... community founder Jonas Abib, 85, hospitalised with pneumonia .

Was diagnosed with cancer last year and another one who seemed on the brink of death before inexplicably recovering.

According to lots of people who know him on facebook, he's critical and "in his final hours" seemingly with terminal cancer, as he revealed he was suffering from cancer in December 2020. He's been in failing health for years with heart problems, recurrent erysipelas and everything.

Major Eastern Orthodox Church leaders really aren't doing well compared to Ayatollahs, major Hindu, Buddhist, Christian leaders. Oldest with a wiki page as far as I know is Simeon (Jakovlevič), 96. Then there's Archbishop Demetrios of America, 94, a major name. Two from 1929, Ukraine's Filaret and Albania's Anastasios, both who survived the covid purge of late 2020. None from 1930 as far as I know, 1931 has John Zizioulas and 1932 Herman (Swaiko) who retired in 2008, only 6 nonagenarians in total. 1933 has the walking corpse that is Ilia II of Georgia, 1934 as far as I know only has Kallistos, 1935 only has a couple of relatively minor names.

Some kind of an update post...

Pravrajika Bhaktiprana (President Mataji) seems to be doing fine, but she's been wheelchairbound for over a decade. Her VP at the Sri Sarada Math, Pravrajika Anandapranaji was hospitalised in January due to "pneumonia and other complications" but discharged a month later. Weird thing is that she was discharged in critical condition, so they probably expected her to die. However she recovered.

Since 2014 the Math's website has given updates on the health of Bhaktiprana and since around October 2020 also on the health of Anandapranaji. They also usually give a full health history and death cause in their obituaries. Here is a picture of Bhaktiprana from the most recent update, April 2022:

mataji.png.69cdfb9f4250075a2fcb0bd98647e1dc.png

New character to the Pravrajika Bhaktiprana/Sri Sarada Math saga: Pravrajika Amalaprana, General Secretary of the Sri Sarada Math and one of the "ruling trio" with Anandapranaji and Bhaktiprana. From the Math's website:

On 28th July night, Pravrajika Amalaprana, the General Secretary was admitted to the Ramakrishna Mission Sevapratishthan and put on a ventilator and other emergency measures in the ICU. She was diagnosed with pneumonia, heart failure and kidney problem. As she responded to the treatment on the 3rd of August, she was put off the ventilator and kept on bipap, which helped her to maintain oxygen saturation. On the next day i.e. on 4th, she was shifted to a cabin. Though still very weak she was discharged from the hospital on the 9th August and returned to the Math at Dakshineswar where she is kept under close medical observation and care. Recovery will take some time.

Tough people these elderly religious leaders.

All very good suggestions. In fact Wamala, Nritya Gopal Das, Parkash and Weakland were all on my radar.

On Rembert Weakland, according to this facebook post from the 13th of August he's now (again?) in hospice and he has "stopped treatment for his cancer"...

That's an unfinished business possibily coming to an end...

Around three days ago I was thinking "Kallistos will probably die in the next twelve hours, Rembert Weakland in a few days or weeks if him being in hospice again isn't a hoax/old news and and Shalom Cohen will be discharged and will live a few months or a year more"

They've died in the exact opposite order and it's been a week since Kallistos Ware was in "his last hours", surely can't linger on for much longer?

To also make this some kind of an update post and make it actually worth posting...

1. Buddhist leaders: I have nothing to say on the major Buddhist leaders mentioned in this thread before. There's been major losses during the last year in this "department" but all the 90+ ones currently living have been remarkably well Gyanashree Mahathir and a few others however seem very frail.

2. Ayatollahs: I went through that November 2021 list of Ayatollahs. Don't have much to say about them either, from what I know there's been two hospitalisations during the last year (Sistani, brief hospitalisation in February, al-Fayadh) and liberal Grand Ayatollah al-Fayadh was rumored dead in October 2021. al-Fayadh seems to have had a rough covid. The oldest ones + Mousa Shubairi Zanjani seem to be the frailest. There are some names missing from that list.

3. Orthodox leaders: Kallistos Ware will obviously be the next to go, Ilia II of Georgia is in very poor health battling advanced parkinson's and serious heart diseases and other health problems, Chrysostomos II of Cyprus is rumored to be ill. Neophyte of Bulgaria was hospitalised in May after breaking his femur and Bartholomew I the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople was been hospitalised a few times months ago, mentioned here. Simeon Jakovlevič is wheelchairbound.

Here's Ilia II this month:

iliaii.thumb.jpg.8cf75f2cbf3ad04f00cefc2d3e91d68b.jpg

4. Hindus: Not much of these listed, but the oldest one, Swaroopanand Saraswati seems pretty stable. Swami Smaranananda is 92/93 and suffers from multiple age-related diseases, most recently spent time in hospital in March. ISKCON's Jayapataka Swami* is only 73, but has been wheelchairbound since 2008 when he had a brain stem stroke and two bleeds in his brain, underwent a tracheotomy and spent ages in coma. He's been hospitalised multiple times since, most recently around January. He has some kind of a tube permanently going into his mouth. Nritya Gopal Das is the most discussed one here probably, his kidneys were fucked by covid in 2020 and he's been very frail since.

*Seems like he's an extremely ill man and reading on him I'm puzzled how he's still alive. First of all he had Hepatitis C from the 1980s when he contracted it from a blood transfusion, undiscovered before his 2008 brain stem stroke (doctors gave him a 1% survival percentage when he had that stroke). He was hospitalised with UTI in 2010, on IV antibiotics with a leg problem in 2011,  severe pneumonia and liver problems in 2015, fever in 2016. In 2018 he got both a liver transplant and a kidney transplant. Had an undisclosed surgery in 2019, covid and a leg infection in 2021 seemingly didn't affect him much. In January he had a blood clot. He still frequently attends events, here in Hyderabad three days ago:

LA bishop Alejandro D. Aclan hospitalised after stroke. Stable in ICU, "in good spirits but very tired"

Here's a new video of that Jayapataka Swami mentioned above:

Looks...lucid, but very frail. I wonder if he has any chances in getting an obit in a major newspaper. He's one of the largest ISKCON leaders

I don't think Russell M. Nelson will be troubling us for another 5 years or so. In fact, I think he'll outlive the Queen and Dick Van Dyke at this rate.
