maryportfuncity 10,639 Posted October 10, 2007 Archbishop Christodoulos's liver cancer has spread to his abdominal cavity. His liver transplant has been cancelled. Dead in months at the outside, almost certainly. For all the hopeful blather he's in a really bad place. He'd get a UK obit too, given the political involvement over the years. DevonDeathTrip 2,358 Posted October 26, 2007 America has nothing more to offer Archbishop Christodoulos, he has returned home to Greece more riddled with cancer than he was when he left. Slowly but surely, he ascends his own Golgotha.* (*Sorry about the flowery language, getting a bit bored of "dying".)

DevonDeathTrip 2,358 Posted November 26, 2007 Archbishop Desmond Tutu probably deserves inclusion as well. He was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996 and last month he announced it has returned. Statistically speaking you are more likely to die of cancer the second time around... I don't have a TV but I happened to be in front of a set last December 31st and saw a New Year interview with the Archbish in which he talked about his cancer having returned, albeit in a non-aggressive manner - hence my inclusion of him in one of my lists for this year. If that is a recent picture of him in the article quoted above, he has certainly lost some weight since the beginning of the year. An article in this weeks Spectator magazine describes Archibishop Tutu as "gravely ill", without elaborating further. I think he's going to kick Peter O'Toole out of 20th place on my DDP team. Canadian Paul 97 Posted December 1, 2007 Pavle, Patriarch of Serbia Pavle in dire straits. Patriarch Pavle is still in hospital "His Holiness is enduring his old-age ailments with dignity and perseverance, in the company of doctors and two monks who are selflessly by his side," Nice little contradictory article on Pavle's health here. Sez the top: "Patriarch's heart getting weaker" reports about the latest news from the VMA where His Holiness Patriarch Pavle is being treated for the past several weeks. But then sez the bottom: Another report reminds it's been 17 years since Patriarch Pavle took over as the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC), and says, "Patriarch's health 'discretely improved'", quoting doctors. Still has a high spot on my 2008 DDP, but it may be easier to tell in a few weeks time.
Banshees Scream 110 Posted December 1, 2007 Patriarch Pavle isn't going anywhere off my list even as I have been making constant transitions every couple of days. Not even mentioning cancer... Karl Frenzel is another valuable gamble and while I'm at it so is former senator Jesse Helms (Who are a little out of topic in this thread) and not all on my list ... But Mother Angelica isn't off topic. One who isn't on my list either but very frail for several years now and definitely a possibility - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_Angelica

Canadian Paul 97 Posted December 1, 2007 Iraqi cleric Aziz Abdul al-Hakim is apparently in remission, following treatment for lung cancer... I reported this in the "Ideas and Possibilities - The Names" thread about a month ago, but since it was the Tehran Times I was highly skeptical. Since I can't read the article (registration required), is it just taking its info from the Tehran Times or is it an independent report? If it's the latter, probably best to leave him off DL 08. Banshees Scream 110 Posted December 2, 2007 Aziz Abdul al-Hakim 'Or is it Abdel??' has been removed from my list and having a Steinbrenner approach I'm standing by the most effective approach which is - of course - cancer. Now I'm f****n not in providence knowing Christodoulos is all of a sudden failing a month before it matters. This means I have to locate a compatible replacement 'again' and ... I was just looking forward to having Christodoulos ... look that way because from my view it's just one of those names that were meant to have a line drawn through it. DevonDeathTrip 2,358 Posted December 12, 2007 Archbishop Christodoulos is now in a critical condition, his kidneys have started to malfunction “He has clarity of thought but his condition is serious. He has trouble breathing due to the pain relief patches,” said a spokesman for the Holy Synod. I don't think he's going to see 2008.
Banshees Scream 110 Posted December 12, 2007 That article is no doubt one of three. The next will say 'Archbishop Christodoulos's' kidneys have stopped working. Then 24 hours later it's replacement time. I'm very disappointed that he is already on the decline but if he croaks at least I can say a great proportion of my names have remained in their current state. Anyway I seriously have a little question. If you are the so called 'Archbishop' of Greece then why do you have Hepatitis C? I might be wrong but isn't that usually contracted through various needles in use for heroin or tattoos? I thought pope valued figures were not allowed to interact with women? So this definitely can't look good for the Orthodox church.
