Lam Sai-wing, creator of the worlds most expensive (38-million-Hong Kong-dollar ($4.9-million)) toilet, has died aged 53.

"The self-made millionaire who moved to Hong Kong from China at 22 was inspired to build the toilet by his boyhood hero, the Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin, who said gold should be used to make toilets after the victory of socialism to remind people of capitalist waste."

Just read on Six Music News that Bryan Morrison who made a few quid managing Pink Floyd and loads more from publishing the likes of the Bee Gees has died. He'd been in a coma for a couple of years after suffering brain injuries during a polo match.

Belgian cartoonist Raymond Macherot, best known for his comic series "Clifton" which by the looks of it pokes fun at English people by assuming stereotypes, has passed away at the age of 84.

Still waiting on a British news source to follow up...

One that escaped the 'Famous Belgians' thread. Congratualtions for a totally obscure Beneluxer and welcome aboard Ulitzer.

Ah, yes, good old Clifton. My favourite episode is the one where he single-handedly defeats the German war machine, saves Belgium from certain destruction, and is rewarded with a lifetime's supply of chips and chocolate bars. And lace.

What about beer, peket, moules, speculoos, waffles and most importantly chicons/witloof? (cue Godot stage left)

Belgian endive is also known as French endive, witlo(o)f in the USA, chicory in the UK, as witlof (the Dutch name) in Australia, endive in France, and chicon in parts of Northern France and in Francophone parts of Belgium. It has a small head of cream-coloured, bitter leaves. It is grown completely underground or indoors in the absence of sunlight in order to prevent the leaves from turning green and opening up (etiolation). The plant has to be kept just below the soil surface as it grows, only showing the very tip of the leaves. It is often sold wrapped in blue paper to protect it from light and so preserve its pale colour and delicate flavour. The smooth, creamy white leaves may be served stuffed, baked, boiled, cut and cooked in a milk sauce, or simply cut raw. Slightly bitter, the whiter the leaf, the less bitter the taste. The harder inner part of the stem, at the bottom of the head, should be cut out before cooking to prevent bitterness. Belgium exports chicon/witloof to over 40 different countries.[4] The technique for growing blanched endives was accidentally discovered in the 1850s in the Josaphat valley in Schaerbeek, Belgium [5]. Endive is cultivated for culinary use by cutting the leaves from the growing plant, then keeping the living stem and root in a dark place. A new bud develops but without sunlight it is white and lacks the bitterness of the sun-exposed foliage. Today France is the largest producer of endives.

This guy must have been a fan of Midlands' rock groups, as he combined the names of two lead singers into his:

The first of the Osborns to go

For all that, he falls into the Never Heard of Him category for me

Jimmy Murray, one of the best footballers never to win a full England cap, has died, aged 72.

Murray scored 155 goals in 273 games for Wolves when they were great (though they're doing okay now) - winning two league titles & one FA Cup. Yet despite being their top goalscorer, he was ignored by the England selectors, alas.

Initially thought this was the same chap who played for Reading, Hearts & Scotland but not so!

Oh aye, and whilst I'm unwinding with a post whore session. Boris Efimov is still alive and, according to Wikipedia, working hard enough to make Edward Upward look like a dosser.

All that hard work was too much for a 108 year old. He's dead.

The last relevant thing I heard that he was taken to hospital in May 2007 with lung problems. But the year passed and he is still with us. I would however include him into my shortlist for next year if I had one.

J.L. Chestnut, the first black attorney in Selma, AL, passed away 9/30/2008 from kidney failure. An amazing man who fought an amazing battle behind the scenes of the US Civil Rights movement.

Stop press; Visitors to the graveyard have found a hole in the ground, a butterknife and muddy footprints heading in the direction of his house.
