Ah. I'm thinking of Davie Provan when recalling those Spain/Mexico squads...

Is he ill?

No. It's just crossed my mind thinking about the 80s Scottish World Cup squads and whether Jardine was in them and the chap I was thinking was Provan...or was it Davey Cooper?!

Geoff Strong

The former Arsenal, Liverpool and Coventry City player has died aged 75. He was part of the team that clinched Liverpool's first ever FA Cup win in 1965 under Bill Shankly. He played 155 games for Liverpool between 1964 and 1970, scoring 29 times.

Just discovered another death post-78, Vojacek, who played for Czechoslovakia in two games (including versus England) in 1982, died in 2006. Last post updated for him and Flohe.

Stefano Borgonovo has lost his battle with ALS, aged 49. Only on Italian-language sites at the moment but, as Italy will be playing in black armbands this evening, there's no way there won't be an English-language obit by 9pm.

Bollocks! I dropped him from my line-up this year :banghead:

Should he get the obit, which I think he should, I believe that puts me in 2nd place...

Jesus, he took forever!

Looks like I'm accidentally having a half-decent year in the DDP. Well, the GB team won golds in the London Olympics didn't they?

BBC commentator Guy Mowbray mentioned Borgonovo 8 minutes into the Italy vs Spain match...

Borgonovo was one of the greatest supporting actors in football history, as the sidekick to Baggio during his Fiorentina days. Shame Italy's frontline was so stacked at the turn of the 90s, he'd have definitely got more than three caps. We could do with him on the pitch tonight, tbh.

If he gets orbit and Mandela dies I will have reached my target of getting more hits than last year . Which is f##king hard considering i only got 3 hits .lol

I shouldn't be happy, but I'm really in DDP contention now

It's a first hit for my footballing theme team, but I'll be slightly pissed if I end up losing the whole thing because I put the likes of Metsu, Jardine and Borgonovo et. al on a theme team.

I've already decided this is the last year I'll deliberately weaken my team, so no more theme teams for me from 2014, even if it does make picking a top 20 more difficult.

I take it the Reuters obit is acceptable, but if not, there's a Yahoo one here (which I think has recently been deemed OK)

Well, maybe I've benefitted so far, because Pertwee wouldn't have made the top 20, but Dora Bryan and him would've been dropped in deference to Sandy Jardine & Ron Henry, which if all died, would be about 4 more points. If I'm being really truthful, I think Borgonovo would've ended up as a sub.

But bar Cox, Hawkins,Vilanova and Kilby (one not worth it, 3 recovered), the other 15 join the likes of Wilko Johnson, Valerie Harper and all for a place in the OoO 2014 alumni.

Another one for the 1994 list: Thompson Olihia, who played 65 minutes for Nigeria against Italy in their second round game, has died of malaria. He was also part of the Super Eagles' 1994 ACON-winning side.

One to keep an eye on, the porker adriano....

Adriano agent 'fears for his life' | Football Italia

By Football Italia staff

Former Inter, Fiorentina and Roma striker Adriano is without a team and his former agent has said: “I fear for his life.”

L’Imperatore had the potential to become one of the best strikers in the world, but struggled with depression, injury, drinking and weight problems.

“I fear for his life,” his ex-agent Gilmar Rinaldi told Uol Esporte in Brazil.

“He needs a psychologist. I don’t care about his career as a player, I am simply worried about the man. He is suffering from serious depression and nobody is helping him.

“The death of his father, the problems with alcohol, the nights out and the ties he never quite broke off with the favelas he grew up in are not the real problems, but rather the consequences of this deep depression and the wrong way for him to face it.

“Adriano is like a son to me. Could he commit suicide? I don’t know, I just know that I am very worried and he needs to see a specialist.”

The 31-year-old forward has been without a team for over a year after short spells at Corinthians and Flamengo. He also failed a medical with Internacional.

“Ronaldo decided to take him to Corinthians despite the fact I was convinced it wasn’t wise to expose him to similar pressure.

“At the time both he and Corinthians promised me that Adriano would be looked after by a psychologist. Instead, they left him on his own. He’s alone.”
