Rotten Ali 600 Posted December 9, 2010 Liz Edwards only took a day to die after one bit of grim news - I find it hard to believe we (with him on the team) could be so lucky again in such a short time.

Windsor 2,233 Posted December 9, 2010 It is perhaps not that surprising. His family said last week that they would be suing the Scottish Prison Service for mistreatment and for not providing adequate medical care (which could have spotted his cancer at an earlier stage). Ungrateful bastards! Had we not let his cancer grow to the extent that it did, he would still be in prison today!

Rotten Ali 600 Posted December 9, 2010 Am I alone in my strong suspicion that Megrahi is, if not actually entirely innocent, very likely not responsible for the Lockerbie bombing? No, you're not alone. Ditto - said it before - "Lockerbie" PanAm bombing, 21st Dec 1988, looks more like an Iranian plot to hit back at the USA because the US Navy shot down a civilian Iranian plane. Nothing to do with Libya. cut and paste... Iran Air Flight 655, also known as IR655, was a civilian airliner shot down by US missiles on 3 July 1988, over the Strait of Hormuz, toward the end of the Iran–Iraq War. The aircraft, an Airbus A300B2 operated by Iran Air as IR655, was flying from Bandar Abbas, Iran, to Dubai, UAE, when it was destroyed by the U.S. Navy's guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes, killing all 290 passengers and crew aboard, including 66 children, ranking it seventh among the deadliest airliner fatalities. It was the highest death toll of any aviation incident in the Indian Ocean and the highest death toll of any incident involving an Airbus A300 anywhere in the world. Vincennes was traversing the Strait of Hormuz, inside Iranian territorial waters, and at the time of the attack IR655 was within Iranian airspace. According to the US government, the crew mistakenly identified the Iranian Airbus A300 as an attacking F-14 Tomcat fighter. The Iranian government maintained that the Vincennes knowingly shot down the civilian aircraft. The event generated a great deal of controversy and criticism of the US. Some analysts have blamed US military commanders and the captain of the Vincennes for reckless and aggressive behavior in a tense and dangerous environment. In 1996, the United States and Iran reached "an agreement in full and final settlement of all disputes, differences, claims, counterclaims" relating to the incident at the International Court of Justice. As part of the settlement, the United States agreed to pay US$61.8 million, an average of $213,103.45 per passenger, in compensation to the families of the Iranian victims. However, the United States has never admitted responsibility, nor apologized to Iran. As of summer 2009 Iran Air was still using flight number IR655 on the Tehran–Dubai route. Further... The incident overshadowed U.S.-Iran relations for many years. Following the explosion of Pan Am Flight 103 six months later, the British and American governments initially blamed the PFLP-GC, a Palestinian militant group backed by Syria, with assumptions of assistance from Iran in retaliation for Iran Air Flight 655. I only ask because the general consensus seems to be that he is an evil bastard who deserves to die, so I was wondering if he'd actually done anything to deserve such opprobrium, apart from just being a Lybian obviously. Guilty or not, that he's complicit in the murkiness of what actually happened is enough for me to not care about his failing health.
Durham Red 0 Posted December 10, 2010 Sod the whys and the wherefors. If he croaks within 21 days I'm on for a free slap-up meal at Gaucho's in Sloane Square! Saying that, 'dead within a couple of months' prompted a Methusulan comeback that lasted for over a year, so 'dead within days' probably means he'll linger on for a month or two. Madame Defarge 21 Posted December 11, 2010 Am I alone in my strong suspicion that Megrahi is, if not actually entirely innocent, very likely not responsible for the Lockerbie bombing? No, you're not alone. No, it sounds fishy to me too. I suspect he may have been a fall guy, and one of the reasons why the compassionate release was achieved so quickly was because some people in high places in several governments knew he wasn't the one. It's likely we'll never find out, though.

Rotten Ali 600 Posted December 14, 2010 Has to be Maggie, getting the "most picked" position until her demise. And our deathlist admin should have her listed at position number 10 every year from now on, until she dies. As for al-Megrahi, he will still be popular, but I don't think quite as many will pick him as did pick him last year. (al-Megrahi down 5%, where-as Thatcher will put on about 20%)

JR976evil 905 Posted December 18, 2010 there are a LOT of holes in the whole thing, for one it was 2 WHOLE YEARS before the British Government launched an official investigation. I do not believe Maggie Thatcher would hold off on such a thing unless she was pressured to do so, most likely by the US, you imagine she would be demanding answers straight away. I read that there a Syrian intelligence officer was considered a prime suspect, he had experience in the kind of method of bombing that it was attributed to, but wasn't pursued cause the Yanks were trying to get Syria 'on side' at the time. There is definitely enough compelling evidence for the investigation to be re-opened, a number of the victim's relatives are sceptical of Al-megrahi's guilt, it should be noted. However both the UK and US Governments will likely do everything they can to stop this from ever happening, probably a whole load of embarrassing skeletons waiting to be unearthed...
