Minimalists (and other classical composers/musicians)

Wikipedia says that American pianist and classical composer Gil Trythall died in February this year:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gil_Trythall

He is a DDP pick, so List of the Lost. Can't find the source for the death date though.

He has concerts scheduled up to March 2024. I plan on seeing him at the end of the month!

Hmhm, wouldn't get my hopes up.

Daniel Barenboim should be on deathlist 2024, a name famous in the World and seriously in bad health

I had no idea he was even working. He has been steadily deteriorating since last December.

Catherine Christer Hennix, pioneering electronic musician, in the style that would today be called Minimalism, has died at 75:

I have been listening to some of it. Pioneering work, but obviously lacking for today's ears.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Herbert Blomstedt (95) before here, the oldest (professional) conductor still performing. He broke a hip last year and since then he uses a cane, but still goes voor 30 minute walks. He conducts 80 times a year, but he sits while doing so, and in a review of his performance at the Concertgebouw last weekend he was described as 'fragile' in the newspaper.

(he looks 80 at most, btw..)

Blomstedt has had to cancel a concert for health reasons:

Opera "legend", Matthew Epstein, in a coma after a failed suicide attempt:

https://slippedisc.com/2023/12/opera-legend-in-failed-suicide-attempt/

He said he wanted to die at 75, but a hotel clerk ruined this goal, for now.

Epstein does not have a wikipedia page though, so probably pretty marginal outside of the opera world.

So MTT wants to do one more weekend of concerts, January 25th to 27th:

The rest is all cancelled. Do we think he can make it? Will he die on stage?

This is only about the San Francisco Symphony. MTT still has concerts scheduled up to May 2024.

I was just looking at the start of this thread, and the Big Four of Minimalism are still all with us fifteen years later - Terry Riley and La Monte Young both 88, Steve Reich 87 and Philip Glass 87 next week. Perhaps the music is conducive to a healthy lifestyle. Has any minimalist composer embraced the "too fast to live, too young to die" ethos?

A most excellent suggestion. Glass, Reich, Part and Boulez are all doing well at the moment, but there are others of similar vintage;

We all know about Elliott Carter, who made a sprightly century last December, but

Henri Dutilleux is 93

John Gardner is 92

Gyorgy Kurtag is 83

Hans Werner Henze is 82, as is John Joubert

Einojuhani Rautavaara is 81

Peter Sculthorpe is 80

All, save for Gardner, are still working. There are others, but It'd just get boring

However, MiB, Carl Andre - he of the bricks - is a mere 73

Carl Andre dead at 88.: https://www.artnews.com/art-news/news/carl-andre-minimalism-dead-1234693978/
