It was still there and functioning about 2 years ago...there are still signs for it near Salisbury so assume it's open to this day...

Unconvinced. I reckon somebody had previously used the pub including but not necessarily its toilet then just ran into the sign knocking the Wo at the beginning off and nobody has repaired it.

TQR 14,385 Posted September 11, 2021 What an absolute treat watching this Raducanu masterclass at the US Open! Amazing spectacle, amazing sportsperson. If she doesn’t win SPOTY this year then it’s a fix. Best reaction on Twitter:

That said, the medical time out was wonderfully timed. She'd failed to take 3 match points, then lost a game, was break point down on her own serve and there had been a massive momentum shift immediately prior to her cutting her leg. Seems like a lovely girl. Telegenic too. No doubt she'll be on Graham Norton next week and advertising low fat yoghurt alongside KJT by the week after. time 8,594 Posted September 12, 2021 I'm not really a tennis fan, but I took an interest and did watch the second set after I saw the first set went her way (I'd just watched Last Night of the Proms and was feeling unusually patriotic). Obviously pleased for her personally, and for her 'entourage'. What's really pissed me off though, is the number of keyboard warriors (on both sides) either claiming that they had some part in her success (looking at Piers Moron here), or celebrating her victory as a victory for multiculturalism (which it may be) and copying her in on every post! Just let her enjoy the moment ffs!

I still say 1984. Anyway, in a totally unscientific manner and given I now have completed lists for top 30 hits in the UK charts for 1982, 1983 and 1984 (I still have my 1981 list too if you'd like that list too), I thought I'd have a go at completing a representative chart of the year. Now this isn't by sales, that would be too easy. What I have done here is pick acts who have at least one living member today. Then I have chosen that act's highest charting position in that year. So if an act's best position was #30, it appears at #30 in the list and so on. There obviously has been some competition and debate as to the higher positions where acts are more likely to be tied, so in that case, I've gone with my choice. If anything, it gives you a playlist of that year but it's a fair representative sample of each year which doesn't depend on sales only. So they follow in the next post. Enjoy listening to anything you haven't heard before.... Think I got up to 1986. With a chance to update, here are the lists following the rules as above I have slung together (with some not inconsiderable conflict over some picks I couldn't make) for 1987 and 1988. 1987 #01 Pump Up The Volume - M/A/R/R/S #02 Call Me - Spagna #03 Letter From America - Proclaimers #04 With Or Without You - U2 #05 It Doesn't Have To Be This Way - Blow Monkeys #06 Incommunicado - Marillion #07 Mony Mony - Billy Idol #08 Funky Town - Pseudo Echo #09 Hey Matthew - Karel Fialka #10 Sheila Take A Bow - The Smiths #11 When Smokey Sings - ABC #12 Bridge To Your Heart - Wax #13 Wanted (Dead Or Alive) -Bon Jovi #14 This Wheel's On Fire - Siouxsie And The Banshees #15 Me And The Farmer - Housemartins #16 Hourglass - Squeeze #17 Dreamin' - Status Quo #18 Prime Mover - Zodiac Mindwarp And The Love Reaction #19 Valerie - Steve Winwood #20 I'm The Man - Anthrax #21 The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades - Timbuk3 #22 Songbird - Kenny G #23 Luka - Suzanne Vega #24 I'd Rather Go Blind - Ruby Turner #25 Beethoven (I Love To Listen To) - Eurythmics #26 Girls Girls Girls - Motley Crue #27 Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House #28 Watching The Wildlife - Frankie Goes To Hollywood #29 (Isn't one so I picked another #28) The Game - Echo And The Bunnymen #30 There's A Ghost In My House - The Fall 1988 #01 The Only Way Is Up - Yazz And The Plastic Population #02 Sign Your Name - Terence Trent D'Arby #03 Teardrops - Womack And Womack #04 Fast Car - Tracy Chapman #05 Good Life - Inner City #06 Breakfast In Bed - UB40 with Chrissie Hynde #07 The Race - Yello #08 Real Gone Kid - Deacon Blue #09 1-2-3 - Gloria Estefan And The Miami Sound Machine #10 Martha's Harbour - All About Eve #11 Don't Go - Hothouse Flowers #12 Rush Hour - Jane Wiedlin #13 Tougher Than The Rest - Bruce Springsteen #14 I Don't Want Your Love - Duran Duran #15 Somewhere Down The Crazy River - Robbie Robertson #16 You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart - Eurythmics #17 Mandinka - Sinead O'Connor #18 Don't Believe The Hype - Public Enemy #19 All Fired Up - Pat Benatar #20 There's More To Love - Communards #21 Spy In The House Of Love - Was Not Was #22 Tomorrow People - Ziggy Marley And The Melody Makers #23 Piano In The Dark - Brenda Russell #24 Sweet Child O' Mine - Guns 'N' Roses #25 Kokomo - Beach Boys #26 I Want Her - Keith Sweat #27 Just Like Paradise - David Lee Roth #28 Life At A Top People's Health Farm - Style Council #29 Paradise - Sade #30 Sidewalking - Jesus And The Mary Chain
msc 18,437 Posted September 24, 2021 Not much correlation between charts and personal taste there, although Teardrops is a proper tune. And not a coroner's tune as autocorrect tried to write!

I think once you take out the dead as I have, such as Michael Jackson, Bowie, Prince, George Michael etc etc, it shows the dominance that a lot of those artists had on the charts at that time. I've said before, if there's something you haven't heard, it might get onto your playlist. I think I listened to The Race on a loop throughout 1988.
