Some statistics:

27.5% of the current cardinals were created by John Paul II, despite he's been dead for 16 years. The number for Benedict XVI is 30.6% and for Francis it's 41.9%.

Longest serving cardinals include (before 1990):

Since 2nd of February 1983: Michael Michai Kitbunchu (b. 1929), Alexandre do Nascimento (1925-2024) and Thomas Williams (1930-2023)

Since 25th of May 1985: Paul Poupard (b. 1930), Jozef Tomko (1924-2022), Friedrich Wetter (b. 1928) and Francis Arinze (b. 1932)

Since 28th of June 1988: José Freire Falcão (1925-2021), Eduardo Martínez Somalo (1927-2021) and Alexandre José Maria dos Santos (1924?-2021)

The youngest cardinal created by John Paul II is Péter Erdő (b. 1952)

The oldest cardinal out of all the 222 is Albert Vanhoye (1923-2021, 98 in July)

There are three former cardinals:

Popes Francis and Benedict XVI

Theodore McCarrick (b. 1930), resigned due to allegations of sexual misconduct in 2018.

So, who are the oldest living Cardinals and what is their health like?

1. Albert Vanhoye (1923)

Health issues: apparently fine. He is a scholar who never held any diocese.

Albert Vanhoye apparently not fine.

He est décédé at 98.

Three cardinals remain who didn't participate in the 2005 conclave due to already being over 80.

Vanhoye was not between them as he was created cardinal in 2006.

Possibility for next year, former US cardinal Theodore McCarrick, 91 years old, and now charged for sexual abuse:

One of JP2's favoured sons, he was on my shortlist a few years ago due to frail health but I suspect its "frail health" in inverted commas.

Spanish Roman Catholic cardinal, Eduardo Martínez Somalo, passed away today at the age of 94.

Notably the acting sovereign of the Vatican City in 2005 after the death of John Paul II.

This means that the extremely rare era of there being four living heads of state of the vatican (two popes, two acting sovereigns) is finally over.

They were:

Eduardo Somalo (1927-2021) Acting Sovereign 2-19 April 2005 between the death of John Paul II and the election of Benedict XVI. Somalo destroyed JPII's Ring of the Fisherman when he died. Somalo was therefore the last living person to have destroyed a Ring of the Fisherman, as Benedict's ring was not destroyed and apparently will not be destroyed even when he dies.

Benedict XVI (1927-) Pope from 19th of April 2005 to 28th of February 2013.

Angelo Sodano (1927-2022) Acting Sovereign 28th of February to 13th of March 2013.

Francis (1936-) Pope since 13th of March 2013.

To be correct Tarcisio Bertone was the Camerlengo during the Sede Vacante of 2013 not Sodano who was the Dean of the College of Cardinals.

Ray's condition has deteriorated and the next 48 hours are crucial.

Send your thoughts and prayers, that will surely heal him.

Roman Catholic priest Timothy Radcliffe (wiki) is in hospital after having surgery according to the infamous Digital Nun on twitter. Seems to be cancer related judging by the replies but I can't find much more info on it:

On life support. Apparently unvaccinated, but I'm not sure it would have saved him anyway.
