Grimmer also won the Holmenkollen ski festival twice (1970-71) at 50 km. He competed in the 1964, 1968 and 1972 Olympics and won two bronze medals: in the giant slalom in 1968 and the downhill in 1972. On January 5, 1967, Messner won the first World Cup race, a slalom; he had a further 15 World Cup podiums later in his career. In the 1970s he pioneered the use of short skis in technical races. She is notable for accomplishing the feat of being the only person to win Olympic gold medals in cross-country skiing and biathlon.
