He was the first Olympic champion in this modality, then the oldest, now the oldest is Magnar Solberg from Norway, 85 years old (champion 68 and 72)

Simon Dunn, who competed for Australia at the 2022 Winter Olympics in bobsleigh, has died. He was 35. Dunn was the first openly gay athlete on the team. He also played professional rugby.

Jeff Hamilton, American speed skier who won bronze in the Demonstration event of Speed Skiing at Albertville 1992  died on January 10th aged 56.

Kyle Smaine, American Freestyle skier who didn’t compete at the games but did become world champion in 2015 in the halfpipe. He was 31 and died in an Avalanche in Japan. Times
Duncan Pugh - Australian bobsledder who competed in Vancouver 2010. He was 48.

Finnish 2018 winter olympics biathlete Venla Lehtonen, 27, suffering from heart problems. Seems to have some kind of a health history, was suffering from multiple health issues in 2020.

Tauno Honkanen, 1948 Winter Olympics Military Patrol is still alive as far as I know despite not being mentioned on the Oldest Olympians list. 2014 YLE mention, 2019 image from Facebook. Should be one of the last people to participate in that still alive. Jaroslav Šír is the only one marked living on Wikipedia, on the Czech team Otto Skrbek and Karel Dvořák are likely dead, same for Romanians Niculae-Cornel Crăciun and Ion Kasky. All the others are confirmed to be dead.

This is the second stroke he has suffered in a month. He also lost the sight of his right eye

Sound like he is in a pretty grim condition, according to this article:

Lost both hands and feet, and has cerebral haemorrhage, cerebral oedema, meningitis and 2 strokes. 

 

Just let the poor fucker go with some small amount of dignity.

Carl E. Nelson, a trailblazing athletic trainer who introduced sports medicine to Colby and across central Maine, has died. A mentor, caring professional, and trusted friend, his deliberate and innovative programs benefited thousands of students and their families. He died Feb. 26, 2023, at his home in Waterville. He was 92.

In 1972 Nelson was tapped to be an Olympic athletic trainer in Sapporo, Japan, a role he also held in 1976 in Innsbruck, Austria. During the next winter games, in 1980 in Lake Placid, N.Y., he directed athletic training and physical therapy services. For his far-reaching contributions, Nelson was inducted into the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Hall of Fame in 1986, an athletic trainer’s highest honour. In 2018 he was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame.

Kostomarov is improving and will be soon out of coma, though he might need an additional amputation.

I'm very happy to be proved wrong if he manages to pull through this. Long way to go though. Reminds me of what Nick Cordero went through before he finally died.

German Klaus Bonsack, Luge Olympic Champion at the 1968 Winter Games is dead aged 81

He won a record 4 olympic medals in luge. However this record was beaten by fellow countrymate Georg Hackl in 2006
