Drol's from Italy, isn't he?  I think it's just a language thing.  Like AIDS is SIDA in French.  Similar words but different order.

In that case, I expect to see colours, rumours, realise, etc in your future posts.

Yes, it stands for Unione Repubbliche Socialiste Sovietiche. My bad, it is different in English.

@msc Just if you are struggling for a news spot on the DDP, here's a lovely recent story on John Cruickshank VC: https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/aberdeen/2240459/woman-thanks-aberdeen-war-hero-for-miracle-rescue-of-her-australian-pilot-dad/

Nice for me to have something positive to post, rather than the miserableness of trembling low hanging fruit....

D-Day veteran John Hutton has died aged 96 - last year he replicated his parachute jump into Normandy for the 75th anniversary.

Watched BBC 2's Timewatch last night, about the Dambusters raid. Three of the surviving aircrew appeared.

New Zealander Les Munro, is 92 and the only pilot still alive;

Bomb-aimer George 'Johnny' Johnson, now 90, and the only Briton surviving;.

RCAF F/Sgt Grant MacDonald (age unknown but c90+) was a front-gunner.

Munro and Johnson are pretty much guaranteed UK obituaries, MacDonald, maybe less so.

Sgt Fred Sutherland (RCAF) is believed to be the only other airman still alive.

Was reading the posts from the first page. They're from 2011. Interesting that both George Johnson and Fred Sutherland are still alive, now 98 and 97.

Edit: Apparently Sutherland died last year. Didn't check the wikipedia page but google mentioned that he'd still be alive. Darn

Big death to Finns. Knights of the Mannerheim cross were very respected here and Gerdt had become a symbol for Finnish wwII veterans and after his death Jaakko Valtanen is probably the only left wwII veteran known by most of finns.

For anyone interested, Absolute Radio have set up a one day only Radio 40s station you can find here.

They're playing records from 1920s–1940s, news clips from the day and talking with veterans. A lot of it is very entertaining stuff.

Jim Radford and Captain Tom Moore appeared earlier. Though had to turn it off temporarily when Frank Skinner came on to play a George Formby song on his uke – just awful.

Jim Radford reportedly dead:

Should get him out of those sexual offence accusations...

Economist Kimmo Kara died last month aged 101.

Finnish wikipedia page:

https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimmo_Kara

https://www.hs.fi/muistot/art-2000007021104.html

Probably one of the last people (if not the last one) who was in Marshal of Finland CGE Mannerheim's headquarters during WWII and who knew Mannerheim. Not a combat veteran in any way, but was involved in de-coding messages during the war.

Pierre Simonet, a World War II French liberation hero and one of three surviving soldiers decorated by Charles de Gaulle for his role in the liberation of France, has died. He was 99. French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to Simonet after learning of his death.

Shocked that no major news organisations have reported this yet. Same with actor John Fraser.

The British press are still too busy salivating about the news of Biden/Harris. Even the U.S. media have pretty much stopped talking about it constantly on rolling news by now.

Jim Radford featured alongside Lord Sacks and John Sessions on the latest episode of The Last Word.

Does that count as a QO?

Last Word doesn't because "The notice of death must be in written English. Video links are only accepted if the strapline mentions the celeb’s passing."

However, each Last Word episode has this page. Which is a straight up mention of death in a QO.

Rules: bbc.co.uk/news (and all subsections, including the previously banned local news pages)

Does "ALL subsections" include pages for BBC News Programmes on the programmes section like this? I've just assumed no, but let's see what the forum thinks...

The closest we've come to testing this rule was Cynthia Heimel's death, but the blurb didn't mention she was getting a tribute on that particular news broadcast...

(Hang on, he's not a DDP pick, but I guess that's another unsorted loophole...)

Yeah, I didn’t check if he was a pick. Handy to know though.

In the case of Last Word, it couldn't be more in the spirit of a proper obituary.  Much more than a passing mention.

So I think it should count as a QO.

Rest of committee had assumed I meant pages like this when I said all subsections of BBC news, so, yes, the Last Word page ( note the death has to be written down) counts.

It's different from the long running BBC Music pages debate as those are taken off Wiki whereas this is written by the production staff.

Another loophole that needs spelt out in the rules!

Hmm... misleading heading.

If you read the end of the article, it explains that there are still two alive, both 100+, but they emigrated to North America.
