Who Should Be On The 2013 Deathlist?

Recommended Posts

Eli Wallach

Kirk Douglas

I'd hesitate about pushing old Eli off the list. He was doing better healthwise after his near death experience several years back with his hip surgery but recently he's been taking a tumble and has been eyeing cemetery plotz.

Just kidding.

As a sideline to Wallach, maybe we can put in his wife the decrepit Anne Jackson who is 86 herself....we could '86' her.

She and Eli have been married for 64+ years.....it will be 65 if they both last to Brenda's birthday in March.

As to Douglas I'm convinced he's been dead a decade already.

Eesti - I'm fairly certain we wouldn't want Patrick Moore on our 2013 list!!

Okay. I looked down all 8 pages and managed to create this list with 26 names:

Elisabeth Murdoch

Any opinions?

Isn't she dead?

Let's see

One of the first people on the moon, several former heads of states of largely populated countries,a Bafta/Oscar Best Actress nominee,A Nobel Prize Winning Author, A Rockafeller, one of the biggest country singers ever and possibly the most famous female film director ever.

I would be shocked if any of those people didn't get an Obit when they die.

9. Jack Brabham - former F1 champ suffering from kidney failure and other health issues

Interesting choices but not sure about Brabham. He was on television here not so long ago and looked okay. They didn't mention any health issues in the interview. (Not saying you are wrong though - he does keep a fairly low profile and doesn't appear in the media that much at the best of times.)

Trust me, Brabham is not a well chap. However, he's a determined b****er and whilst he's not in good health, I don't think he'll die next year as his kidney failure is under control at the moment.

I saw an interview with Brabham from this past summer for an F1 website, and an article about a black-tie dinner held in his honor just a couple of months ago. Both articles noted his physical frailty, though the interviewer added that his mind is still very sharp. Apparently along with the kidney troubles (which he's been dealing with for a few years now) he's also losing his eyesight to macular degeneration. He admitted in the interview that his health is not good, and his wife at the gala merely said on the subject that he's "doing okay," though she added that they're still planning for his 90th birthday in a few years.

Is he the likeliest candidate to die next year? Maybe, maybe not, but the finish line is definitely in sight for him, and for a list that needs 50 names to fill it I think he's absolutely a reasonable name to put in the conversation.

We also need to be playing for the whole 12 months.

It would be worth putting a few longshots in to lighten the dark Autumnal nights.

My first post here, though I have looked into this site several times before.

Suggestions for NEW names in 2013:

Luise Rainer, 103 yrs old (actress, 2 Oscars in the 30s)

Joan Fontaine, 96 (one Oscar)

Danielle Darrieux, 96 (French actress)

Michele Morgan, 93 (French actress)

Alain Resnais, 91 (film director)

Keeping the EXISTING names (all fading):

Fidel Castro

Nelson Mendela

Erich Priebke

Kirk Douglas

Eli Wallach

If he makes it, he has to be a strong candidate for No.1, notwithstanding Cecil, Winner or people like Bernie Nolan...Global coverage should be considered for the DL list. DDP is a different deal....its a test of judgement....does someone get an obit because they are someone's mother or appeared on a TV show. I enjoy both but I like to see the DL 50 have a little more gravitis. Bob Dole should be top 10 as well. Maybe GHW Bush gets in next to the Thatcher. jmho

I think a good top 10 could be Chavez, Mandela, Cecil, Winner, Clive James, Biggs, Jaruzelski, Dole... then some of the elderly regulars like Douglas I guess.

Depends on what you call an obit. I'd say they're all nailed on for something like BBC coverage and/or at least a paragraph in the national press. Some - Glenn, Whitlam, O'Neal, Tyler-Moore - are definites for proper broadsheet obits.

I'd be surprised by any of these not getting a bona-fide broadsheet obit, with maybe Rockefeller being the outsider.

Luise Rainer is a definite contender not least because of her age. She was recently honoured in Germany and was described as being "very frail" but whether that means she is just really old or at deaths door is debatable.
