5. Pope Francis

In a way, the Pope Benedict XVI miss explains this pick. However, it would only make sense as a long-term commitment: he should now never be dropped until he dies, no matter when that is. Otherwise, there's no point in picking him this year and dropping him next year.

This is how I feel with Dick Cheney, who has been on my list for at least a couple of years.  I'm committed to the bit, at this point.

Such high placement means surely they're seeing him out. Popes shouldn't be misses in general, but yes, feels symbolic given he's far more iconic than Benny was.

the first pope to retire since the Middle Ages is not iconic?

His shows were definitely i-co-nic.

No Pope should be a miss, but Benedict was hardly as visible or as willing to challenge Vatican tradition as Francis.

Me putting the pope on my list this year was a bit of a knee jerk reaction when I saw it in Dec. he was suffering with Lung Inflammation, and they say he uses a wheelchair now sometimes because of knee problems.. I thought maybe he is starting to go down hill a bit.

Calls for a universal ban on surrogacy. This is very unfortunate news for the virgin mother Mary…

Can’t be many policies that the Pope now shares with both the right and left in many countries (See Spain for example.)

Possibly won't go this year but with only having one lung you never know. He'll stay put on the list until he does go. 2-3 years time more likely IMO

Have any names come to light of a successor? That would be a gauge. There is usually, infallibly, someone lined up.

Not usually. Benedict is the really only one who went into the Conclave as "favourite". There's an old saying "he who goes into a conclave a "Pope" comes out a Cardinal" and that's generally been the case

There was speculation about Francis last time around alright but nothing like the certainty there was around Benedict particularly given the area Francis was from.

When Wotlya became JPII it was from nowhere. I don't think He hadn't been talked about much if at all. (Different era granted but all the same he was a surprise choice)

I think a lot of people expect a non white successor.

Maybe they will close down a bit. They have a rep of taking care of themselves. Non white as long as he is European. Any black Italians up for the job.

Don’t think he will go this year, 2025 or 26 a good bet, his one functioning lung can’t hold out forever

At this point, I'm really not sure why he doesn't go around everywhere with a respirator permanently strapped on. And having his ring finger kissed so many times by anyone he comes across can't be hygienic for someone with one lung who doesn't always have access to soap.

Fails again to read a speech due to "persistent cold".

Hmmmm. He would be more vunerable to picking up cold given the one lung but even allowing for this and his age and time of year  there is a pattern starting to emerge.

Still think he will survive the year and go in 2025 or 26
