I remember 2002 well as it was my 2nd World Cup and won a football because of Brazil winning, but the football wasn't great, there were loads of injuries, the big teams and players mostly underperformed, there were some really bad refereeing decisions (hi there Byron Moreno), and some players were probably doped up to the eyeballs (but hey, it's sport, what's new?) 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I'm don't consider myself a football expert but 2010 is the worst in my book. I almost died of boredom during that tournament. Plus the Vuvuzelas were seriously annoying as fuck. 1990 gets a lot of flack, I'm not quite old enough to remember it personally but it can't have been that bad can it? It had both semi-finals ending in dramatic shoot-outs, and it had that super-cool guy Roger Milla playing for Cameroon and doing his memorable celebrations when he scored. And then you have Gazza crying too. Although, according to Wikipedia, such was the defensive nature of play at that cup, it was actually that tournament that inspired FIFA to bring in the backpass rule so maybe it's easier to reminisce about than it was to watch it. Most of the underdogs I got into crashed out very early, but I was backing the Italians from the start and was delighted they won. Also, first glimpses of the modern German side, some nice African play (but little reward, bar Ghana's last 16 appearance), some entertaining matches. And of course, the bonkers Holland/Portugal match with the 4 red cards and a million yellows: rarely have I cheered for an equaliser to give 30 more minutes of madness quite so much! 2002 probably has little going for it, but its too coated in nostalgia to properly judge here. 2010 started slowly, finished with a whimper, but when it got going from the 2nd round of group matches until the Semis when the two most entertaining sides left in the Cup crashed out, it was rather good. themaninblack 2,112 Posted July 15, 2013 If anything, the Euros are arguably the better tournaments now for footballing reasons. Euro 2000 was Mexico '70 for those born after 1970. Spain may have the "greatest team ever" nowadays but boy were they entertaining when they were the also-rans. That Spain-Yugoslavia match was one of those matches where tactics, commonsense and all that just went completely out of the window and the match just got better and better and better. Italia '90 is a strange tournament. There was a massive mobilisation of revision regarding its reputation during the last World Cup to point where it's considered something of a lost classic, like a past misunderstood film which is now finding critical favour. I don't entirely subscribe to that opinion. It certainly had it's dramatic moments. If I may get a bit ponsy about it, it could be said that Italia '90 was culturally a memorable tournament and a hugely influential one. Interesting to note that by the time of USA '94, both the FA Premier League and UEFA Champions League were established. The football itself was at times dire, negative and unambitious. But it was 'World in Motion', it was Gazza's tears, it was those flashy Italian graphics, Roger Milla and Big Jack and all that. It was more iconic, more powerful than some World Cups that had easily the better football (stand up France '98). To give some perspective as to the real issue surrounding the comparison of the last World Cup and its last considered nadir: South Africa 2010 was Italia '90, but in which England were shit... I really enjoyed France 98, purely because I happened to be in France during much of it. Now I'm in my 30s, I worry I'm going to lose the ability to map changes in my life to World Cups (1990 was the first I remember, 1994 was the first I was anticipating before it started, 1998 was when hormones were kicking in, 2002 I was at uni, 2006 was my first year in the Real World of work, 2010 was when I had a career and shit). As said upthread, if you take out the first round and the finals, 2010 would probably be one of the best, but it started like a corpse and ended like one as well. 2014 will probably only be palatable if Argentina win and Brazil goes into mass rioting as a result. Red Flag 84 Posted July 16, 2013 My abiding memory of 2010 is sticking the matches on the TV in the lounge of my halls and then spending most of the time in my room on my laptop, running out every time there was a goal - which wasn't very often I do think there was a lack of stand-out memorable moments, which can be influential - even 1990 and 2002 had their share. For 2010, you've basically got the Suarez incident, Iniesta's goal in the final (though I was busy doing my own Fabien Barthez vs Di Canio routine as he scored, which ruined the moment), and the England calamities against USA and Germany will be talked about for a while (at least here). But other than that, I'm struggling Spain may well go down as one of the great international teams of all time but in a playing sense they were totally forgettable in that tournament - so fucking turgid, with no real defining moment. It was such a shame the Germans didn't wallop them in the semis - had they done so, and then gone on to beat Holland in the final, perhaps our memories would have been fonder, because you'd have a team with moments that you could have pointed to and said "that's why they're world champions". You couldn't do that with that Spain team because they won virtually every match by 1 goal I wonder if the World Cup's got to the point of being too big, in the sense that the expectation is now so great for virtually every team that they're just too scared (and tired) to perform. Predictor 1,032 Posted July 17, 2013 As an addendum to that grammatical zinger, I think that every player from the 1990 WC has now retired, with Kasey Keller (retired in 2011) being the last man standing. 1994 WC players still going: Viola (Brazil), Faryd Mondragon (Colombia), Teddy Lucic (Sweden).
