angryGreatness 96 Posted October 15, 2013 .. really, other than Senegal's Cinderella run (and with that reference to Bruno Metsu we're back to deadpool territory again), what did that tournament have? Well, Metsu is no longer in deadpool territory as the lion of Teranga has laid down. I mean he's dead. Knew I should've picked him over Sandy Jardine.

TAFKAG 70 Posted November 6, 2013 Last but not least, 1958 survivors. Again, I'd be grateful if someone could tidy up this to make it readable. Spade_Cooley 9,624 Posted November 13, 2013 Giuseppe Casari was missed out of the original list (Italy 1950, played in goal against Sweden in a 3-2 loss). He's just died, aged 91.
Octopus of Odstock 2,215 Posted November 13, 2013 The reason he's not on the original list is he never played. For the games vs Sweden it was Lucidio Sentimenti, who is still alive and aged 93. Against Paraguay it was the late Giuseppe Moro. The Wikipedia page about him is a load of bollocks. The below links are just two sites that confirm Sentimenti - I couldn't find anything other than Wikipedia about Casari. Another reason why I don't trust Wikipedia with World Cup "research". http://www.rsssf.com...intres1950.html http://www.planetwor...wc50groupc.html What he did do was taunt his own fans during the game - http://pcsd.forumfree.it/?t=59259813 and Wikipedia has taken that as he played. TAFKAG 70 Posted November 24, 2013 Trying to work out which of the 1950s survivors would get obits. Obviously all of the English players, and both Bahr and Borghi played in the USA's 1-0 win over England. Ghiggia would be the oldest surviving World Cup winner (correct?), so he should be OK. Bonpietri is a top 100 player of all time imho, and Amadei is one of the top scorers in Serie A history so they should both manage it no problem. Most of the rest could depend on whether Jonathan Wilson has the time to write about them that week. Morto.
Octopus of Odstock 2,215 Posted November 26, 2013 Cayetano Re, who played in the 1958 World Cup for Paraguay, arguably Paraguay's greatest ever player, top scorer in the Spanish La Liga for Barcelona in 1964/1965, was coach for Paraguay at the 1986 World Cup, owner of the shortest ever surname in World Cup History AND one of the first (and still) few players to admit they have Asperger's Syndrome, has died - http://www.fcbarcelo...964-65-has-died One of the younger 1958 players as well. Octopus of Odstock 2,215 Posted November 27, 2013 At this rate, Brazil aren't going to have any 1958 World Cup winners left by the time the World Cup starts next year - or judging by today, construction workers at their stadiums. But seriously, to lose both the Santoses and Gilmar, on top of de Sordi's passing, is a tremendous shame.
