Zhang Enhua, part of the China squad that played at the 2002 World Cup, has died aged 48.

He must rank as the (equal) most futile/superfluous World Cup player ever - no minutes played, for a side that lost all its games, without scoring. And now he's gone. Still, he probably dined out for days on being a squad member, and at least Grimsby Town FC remembers him for those stunning 16 loan matches (3 goals).

Alan Mcloughlin, 54, was in ireland's 1994 squad but did not play - https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/14849821/alan-mcloughlin-dead-at-54-ireland-legend/

"His legendary status in Ireland was secured with his goal against Northern Ireland in 1993 though he remained a fixture in the squad until 1999, with his last appearance coming against Macedonia.

Despite firing Ireland to the World Cup in 1994, he failed to feature in any of the games.

He was an unused substitute in the group matches against Italy, Mexico and Norway, while he also sat out the Round of 16 tie against Holland."

I had forgotten that the Irish had qualified in 1990.

Thanks for that.

Georgi Dimitrov, Bulgaria captain in the 1986 World Cup has died of cancer. https://www.24chasa.bg/amp/9776443 (Because we can all read Bulgarian!)

There's been a slow trickle of Mexico 86ers departing over the last couple of years. My first World Cup so rather poignant.

Rildo, who scored for Brazil in the 1966 World Cup versus Portugal (Brazil lost 3-1 in a miserable World Cup for them) has died. https://www.mg.superesportes.com.br/app/noticias/futebol/futebol-nacional/2021/05/17/noticia_futebol_nacional,3915928/morre-rildo-ex-lateral-de-botafogo-e-santos-nos-anos-1960-em-los-angeles.shtml

On the other hand, maybe Yoo Sang-chul dropping dead is a good omen for the Azzurri as Euro 2020 commences?
