Too many shitheads out there to keep agro with a friendly country. My opinion. Mauritius is now a strong ally of China so that is more difficult now for many in the west to accept. You just read some headlines, decide you agree with some but not others, and post accordingly. You don't really have the faintest idea what you are talking about with the possible exception of the nationality of the workers who fixed up your parents house. Get a grip. 3

Well actually I did research Mauritius for a DDP obit once and I came away with a deep respect for the country. Crems stance on it is deeply inaccurate and in many ways they actually put us to shame. Mauritius frequently ranks among the highest African countries on the UN civil rights list, ahead of several European countries (in 2017 a similar watchdog ranked it 17th strongest democracy on the planet). It is a parliamentary democracy based on Westminster but which has used the system to promote universal health care AND transport for the old and disabled as a basic right. It's also one of the richer African countries based on thirty years of diplomatic treaties and exports leading it to being currently one of the most peaceful countries on the planet. Under former DDP pick Anerood Jugnauth they went from a newly independent IMF backed country to a booming economy while pursuing progressive policies, converting to the green technology economy before most anyone else, and have zero tolerance for corruption. It's also a multi faith country with various freedoms including the right to be atheist even though that is a minority position. They have had diplomatic arrangements with China since 1972 when Richard Nixon began to push for that and 20 years before their full independence. They also have diplomatic relations with the EU, India, Russia, the UK and USA, on the principle that if everyone values you no one will invade. They've also been asking the West for these islands for decades but at no point have elected a nutter strongman or started a war like so many other places. Basically it's an amazing country and if people are worried about Chinese influence then the answer is stronger friendship and deals with one of the few non tinderboxes on a pretty important continent. 7

The Old Crem 3,580 Posted October 4 I do wonder how Labour will cope trying to stop losing voters to Reform while also facing a stronger Green Party and other left/libreal parties. It’s a big challenge at the moment.

As if it were needed, the Guardian Editorial has now weighed in on this and whilst granted it's a rather left wing source even so it starts out fairly categorically with:- Quote More than five decades ago, Britain began forcibly displacing an entire Indigenous people from their Indian Ocean archipelago so that it could build a military base with the US. The UK itself has acknowledged that that was shameful; one rights group says it has committed crimes against humanity. It would be better for everyone, yourself most of all probably, if you were to think just a little bit before jumping in with a half-baked opinion seconds after a headline appears. Do you still maintain Starmer was 'stupid'? (notwithstanding it was hardly his sole decision). Since the admins still refuse to ban you, please at least try to join in responsibly rather than wasting everyones time with tripe.

This isn't even close to what you were saying. You're moving the goalposts yet again. And in those discussions where you can't find a way to fool even yourself you simply don't answer and move on. What goes on in your head? I did say at the start I was on a fools errand, it appears I don't learn either - insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Never argue with an idiot, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

The Indian Ocean is bigger than you think. And don’t get them started on Diego Garcia. Surely he’s the younger brother of the titular character in the 1974 Sam Peckinpah film Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia ETA: Though I had a reasonable stab at Mauritius, even I was a bit taken aback to discover the Chagos Islands are actually 1,300 odd miles away. If you've got 3 minutes or so read the whole article from the link, it's 1/3 enlightening, 1/3 amusing (Crawley and the Gatwick air corridor) and 1/3 a bit horrifying - or was to me.
