Meanwhile, on the other side of the Atlantic, Jim Jordan has now failed for third time to be elected Speaker of the House of Representatives and the opposition numbers are growing. I particularly like the last line of this latest update, which may well sum up the situation perfectly.

House back on recess - but is the drama over for the day?

We will not get a second vote right away today.

“We’ll have a conference,” Jim Jordan told reporters as he left the House floor, meaning Republicans will meet to plan their next move.

He grinned at assembled journalists but was tight-lipped as reporters fired off questions about what happens next after his third loss.

As House Republicans retreat behind closed doors to hash out their differences, it is unclear whether we will get another vote today at all.

Some Jordan allies have suggested to media outlets that votes may be held continuously through the weekend until Jordan is the nominee.

But, with the resistance against him only appearing to harden and some Republicans planning to skip town anyway, that may well turn out to be a terrible idea.

In the vote that just ended, Hakeem Jeffries received 210 votes, only five less than the magic number he needed to win the gavel.

A few more absences - we're not saying this will happen - and Republicans risk accidentally electing the Democratic leader as Speaker.

The latest is that the extreme wing are going to try and remove the temporary Speaker, Patrick McHenry, because there's whispers about using him as a stopgap, which they won't accept. They're determined to get Jordan over the line, but the rebellion is only going to grow. But even the faithful are losing faith. Bring in the messiah... (he has since confirmed he will support Trump on the 4th ballot should there be one )

I wonder if it's any more wild than Hakeem Jeffries getting the Speakership to suggest this ends with Gaetz backing down and McCarthy getting his Speakership back?

That's 3 down, only another 218 Republicans in the house to have a go, then we can move onto the Democrats...

Wasn't the most popular Republican the one who got 210 votes and only 8 votes against him? Given the two guys to try since haven't broken 200... :sherlock:

Take your lickings like a man Jeremy. Rest assured there's likely to be someone else who'll grab that Portillo moment Monkier ahead of you. (For the love of god let it be the MP for the 18th Century )

I wish he’d have a Milligan moment instead.
