Whitehouse 874 Posted August 17, 2015 Dutch architect Leo de Bever died today as t the age of 85. He was, together with Louis Kalff, responsible for the Design of the Evoluon in Eindhoven. A true masterpiece resembling a flying saucer. I visited this building and the room inside is enormous! This was build in 1966!! Sadly the exposition is no longer there and I'm glad I saw it in full glory. It looks very dated but back then it was state of the art. Here's a movie by Bert Haanstra ordered by the BBC as a trade test colour movie.

Deathray 2,942 Posted March 31, 2016 Big day for your broadsheet obit writers, Zaha Hadid drops dead of a heart attack at 65. The usual person Joe Bloggs couldn't name slipping in after a major celebrity death for maximum exposure I see.
gcreptile 11,066 Posted March 31, 2016 Initially, I thought that this year, death would strike France especially hard, but to be honest, it's the UK that is getting hit the worst. There's a big UK celebrity dying every day, sometimes even two. I actually had the idea to pick Zaha Hadid for a while, mostly because I was looking for obitable arcitects (another neglected target group, in my opinion, especially those that have won the Pritzker Prize). Also, I somehow mentally merged Zaha and Gigi Hadid into one big obitable super-celebrity. Zaha Hadid was one of the most reknowned arcitects of the world, pretty much an A-list celebrity like Pierre Boulez in the world of high culture. Though as I recall, towards the end of her career her star had faded a bit because of repetitive works, or something like that.
RoverAndOut 4,755 Posted March 31, 2016 I can name notable living architects I'm familiar with on one hand, but Zaha Hadid was on my radar, mostly due to her Olympic works. She designed the Aquatics centre for London 2012 (the one that looked like a giant pringle) and there's been a lot of controversy over her design for the Tokyo 2020 stadium but that's about all I know her for.
