This truism should be challenged, it's received wisdom, and wrong. The stories were better that's all. 007 is supposed to be English, it's almost the entire point. Roger Moore had to endure utterly ludicrous plotlines. If anything the best bond was Timothy Dalton.

Sean 6,343 Posted August 25, 2018 I believe his demeanour was as close to the suave English gent as described by the author. As I said though Sean Connery was a close second in my view.Sean was incredible also.I had to watch all the bond films to make a judgement. En Passant 3,745 Posted August 25, 2018 Dalton - English, decent stories (I'll accept the less than perfect acting, don't care) Moore - Just the right amount of suave (camp even?) sadly let down by dreadful storylines (moonraker? Oh please) Brosnan - Despite being Irish, at least didn't actually sound it. Connery - Aided by the best scripts, the tightest direction and being the first. Not nearly as good as 'best bond ever' merchants would have it. Lazenby - crap Craig - All semblance of tongue in cheek lost. Wooden actor, up himself. Drab stories.
Sean 6,343 Posted August 25, 2018 Weirdly though Sean Connery was the greatest actor to play Bond in my view.Roger Moore was a decent actor but nothing special I just felt he fitted the character as Fleming spoke of better.Moore in my view though was a one trick pony he mastered the role of James Bond but I never cared for him as the saint particularly or any other role. Moore in my view simply exposed that flaw in the writing.

Dalton was far from terrible. He played the part with a greater sense of reality, only Craig has done that since. All others have played the part with a high degree of tongue in cheek. Nothing wrong in that at all but comparing Moore with Dalton, as an example, is like trying to compare that 60s abortion Casino Royale with Skyfall.

Look, the goal was open... Though tbh I find the Craig films to mostly be snoozefests with crap villains.
