Ideas And Possibilities For 2017

Who should be number one next year?I would go with Bracknell.

Not happy with that. I had no idea who she was.

I am thinking Desmond Tutu might be the right sort of pick for the top slot.

#1 is usually a Deathlist lifetime achievement spot, so Olivia de Havilland and Kirk Douglas might be other options.

If Lee Bracknell makes the list, I'll be impressed.

She might be low hanging fruit and an easy hit but I don't quite feel the fame factor. It does not bring prestige to the list. For me she is this year's Joey Feek

However many may also have the same thoughts about another potential option Steve Hewlett who is nothing if not forthcoming about his state of health.

Genuinely, I've tested her name out on a few casual folk I know, non-Deadpoolers, and they've all known who she was. I knew those of us who don't watch soaps didn't really know of her before, but a lot of people are addicted to the bloody things, and she was apparently far better known than I'd thought.

In my book - Meads, Bracknell, Christie, St John, King Michael, Booth, and Sellers are all famous enough for the front page, given earlier precedents (and I'd pick Downie, citing the Beeb! Hah), but I am not the Committee. They have their ways.

Whereas even people into Christian country hadn't really heard of Feek.

I realise I am not well versed on soaps but she is not Anita Dobson, Liz Dawn or Sheila Mercier or even Leonard Fenton. This is probably why I never win.

I've been comparing her to Louise Plowright with all the GoFundMe pages for 'life-saving treatment' which I now know not to trust ever again. Plus, I think they are more comparable fame-wise.

I don't think she's Deathlist material myself.

It has to be Peter Falk. He keeps being overlooked by the committee. He's has Alzheimer's by the way.

I don't watch any soaps now, but I did in the 1990s and I know who she is.

I might not have been able to place her by her name think_smiley_46.gif but if you'd said "Zoe Tate" think_smiley_42.gif

She's a reasonably well known character, not a very well known person.

She's not a Jean Alexander or Bill Roach where everyone knows who she is so I don't think she should be on the list.

Leah Bracknell was a main cast member in Emmerdale for 16 years and was involved in many key storylines over the years including being the first lesbian character working at the vets shooting her half brother dead getting pregnant after a one night stand finding her Dad dead at home farm and having a mental breakdown and trying to drown herself in the lake.I too have tested out how famous she is and most people remember her in Emmerdale even if they dont know her real name.Same could be saidfor Anna Wing and Bill Tarmey who made the list. She is easily more recognisable than Herman Wouk and Javier Perez de Cuellar. When she dies she will get an obit by every news outlet in the UK and will get a mention on the main news on BBC and ITV news and had she not revealed her illness she still would have. She is definitely deathlist material.I was 11 when she left and was never a regular watcher at that time. All my friends of a similar age remember her too.

Also DL is not a fame competition.Providing someone meets the criteria which she does they should be picked.Especially when they are so ill.

Completely agree. In a poll of recognition between Bhumibol and Zoe Tate I know who my money would be on. Lee Bracknell is another issue entirely.

Leah Bracknell number one? Fine with me. As long as Lester Piggot and Tommy Chong gets off the list...

That is true of many soap opera actors and actresses.Plus a picture of Leah Bracknell as Zoe Tate is still a picture of Leah Bracknell. For example nearly everyone in Britain would recognise Dot Cotton or Ken Barlow but I am guessing a sizeable number couldnt give you their real names.I remember Bill Roache saying that people outside his friends family and interviewers mainly call him Ken.

I'd recognise Dot Cotton, but had to google her name, because I always mix the actress up with June Whitfield.

Here's more...

Richard Wilson

Glynis Johns

Wesley Pipes (African-American porn actor with lung cancer, possibly terminal)

Lara Roxx (Canadian porn actress living with HIV since 2004)

Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg

Melissa Bell (Singer and mother of Alexandra Burke; kidney problems)

Daisy Berkowitz [scott Putesky] (Heavy metal musician with cancer)

Judy Blume (writer)

James Dresnok (North Korean defector)

Malcolm Young (AC/DC musician with dementia)

Lupita Tovar (Mexican actress)

She's likely to live for another 40 years.

Quite possible. I'm not an expert on HIV/AIDS but what I do understand is that it is not the death sentence that it used to be. There were lots of high-profile deaths from HIV in the 1980s but things have changed a lot since then.

I've made this observation before: the committee when choosing the final list tends to favour more "important" people - if not household names, then certainly those with some level of significance that can be demonstrated in some sort of way - over more obscure, yet still notable, figures.

getting pregnant after a one night stand

It's astonishing how often that happens in soaps

Exactly.Soap opera stars enjoy a high level of recognition but they aren`t known for being them.Same can be said of voice actors. For example few people can visually recognise the voiceovers on the Simpsons but if any die it will make the news.Peter Sallis is a good example of someone who if you are under 30 you probably couldn't name but you would recognize him as Clegg from last of the Summer Wine and as the guy who voiced Wallace.

OK so she is more Gillian Taylforth than Wendy Richards. I haven't watched Emmerdale since they dropped the Farm.

Here's a question: Assuming there are no more deaths on this years deathlist (although there's probably going to be one or two more this year), who should be taken off the deathlist?

I'd drop Gazza, Hawking, Banks (to fit St John on the list), Walker, Stan Lee, Piggot, Pirsig, Dole, Kissinger, Liz Smith, Gall, Ellis, Chong, Randi, MT Moore and Clive James, in no particular order. I'd advise the return of the Queen and Sean Connery, and beyond the soap star/terminally ill cases, would push for Sidney Poitier, Tony Booth, the Pope Emeritus and Gorbachev to make their debuts.

(I know we have no power in the matter, I took joey's question as a role playing exercise...)
