Snake handler Dan Brandon, 31, was found in his home in Church Crookham, Fleet, suffocated to death, in the room in which he kept his snakes, with one pet out of it's pen. Sir Creep 7,093 Posted October 17, 2017 Officials at the Minnesota Zoo say Nikko, reported to be the oldest snow monkey in North America, died Sunday at what the zoo believes was age 34. A release from the zoo states Nikko was born Sept. 11, 1983. He arrived at the Minnesota Zoo in 2001. The release states the average life expectancy for male snow monkeys is 34 years. Sir Creep 7,093 Posted October 29, 2017 Shamba, the oldest gorilla at Zoo Atlanta and one of the oldest gorillas in the United States, died Friday. Zoo personnel reported that Shamba was discovered unresponsive by her care team, and the decision was made to euthanize her. She was 58. Western lowland gorillas are considered geriatric after the age of about 35, and Shamba was part of a group of super-senior gorillas. She and her female counterpart, 54-year-old Choomba, were fondly referred to as the “Golden Girls” by zoo staff. Their male companion, 56-year-old Ozzie, is the oldest living male gorilla in the world. SC On the way to the state fair, I drove by the Tiger Truck Stop yesterday for the first time since Tony's death, and didn't think about it till my mind noticed something as we passed -- the cages were gone and just a grassy area. Like my mind expected something there and it was askew, and my mind started filling in the void with memories of the cage etc. Had to explain to my daughter (7) that we couldn't see Tony any more he was in Tiger Heaven. Sir Creep 7,093 Posted December 21, 2017 Officials say a rare white tiger has died at the Cincinnati Zoo. The 21-year-old male tiger, named Akere, was recently diagnosed with non-treatable oral cancer. A zoo spokeswoman says the tiger was euthanized Wednesday. Akere was in renal failure and had severe arthritis in his hips. The zoo says the tiger was the oldest of his kind in any accredited North American zoo. A tiger’s median life expectancy is 15 to 20 years. Akere arrived in Cincinnati from Nashville in 1996 when he was just 9 months old. For the record we have a white tiger at the Acadiana Zoo in Lafayette, LA that has been there since I moved there in 2008. Will try to find out how old it is. The zoo discovered the virus after six African antelope fell ill and died in October of malignant catarrhal fever. The zoo's Nubian ibex, typically found in the mountains of the Middle East, were identified as the source of the disease, which develops from a herpes virus usually carried asymptomatically. Her rare condition is immediately fatal most of the time, but Bettie Bee beat the odds. On Friday, unfortunately, her luck ran out. The zoo said the woman's arm was injured about 12.50pm during a routine daily procedure with southern white rhino Kei. His popularity was boundless. He rubbed paws with the U.S. Coast Guard crews stationed there, posed for pictures with the Blue Angels who dropped by for Cherry Festival shows, had his own A.M.A. on Reddit, and even went skydiving. But at the end of each day, he was happiest being hugged by his owner and handler, airport operations supervisor Brian Edwards. Derby made headlines nationwide and was featured by ESPN for entertaining crowds by grabbing bats at home plate during games. He was 20 days shy of his 10th birthday. The cause of death was cancer. Sir Creep 7,093 Posted January 11, 2018 A Florida man now living in Bali is fighting for his life after he fell from a roof while chasing a monkey that had stolen his favorite Pittsburgh Steelers cap. The Northwest Florida Daily News reported that Jeff "Swede" Swedenhjelm fell 33 feet. Villagers took him to a local hospital, where they found severe damage to his spinal cord. He currently is paralyzed from the chest down. Lyric Swedenhjelm, who lives in Destin (FL), said the family is trying to get her father to a country with a spinal specialist. She said Swedenhjelm is in a medically induced coma and is on a ventilator. The family has started a fundraising page on GoFundMe, which has already raised more than $36,000. Vila was the matriarch of five generations and served as a surrogate mother for several hand-raised western lowland gorillas, according to the zoo. She celebrated her 60th birthday in October.
