Is there any discernible patterns with liberal, northern Ireland mps and the SNP? Possibly? Although after trawling through all that for you my eyes feel a bit like Mr Magoos so that can wait for now.

Oh no rush at all! Please rest your eyes and then test they have fully recovered by going for a car drive to a nice scenic spot before attempting anything more! I would feel bad if you didnt take care and check your fitness and wellbeing in such a way before you attempted anything.

Nothing more fucking annoying than doing a mahoosive amount of work to prove something that then comes out displaying the average information. Average life expectancy in UK is 81.3 so about the same as a Labour MP. I suspect the UK average will also include many under 75 and many over 90. The conclusion I would draw from your magnificent effort is that the population of Labour MPs displays average population characteristics despite their stereotype image of smoking, beer swilling, pork pie and deep fried Mars bar eating northerners. YoungWillz 21,208 Posted May 26, 2020 I'm going to say that msc has done an amazing job there. Doing such a list over that extended period of time does however have built in issues - the rise in life expectancy and progress in treatment and care will somehow slightly skew the results upward. What was the average life expectancy (all genders) at the start of, and also throughout, the period for example? It's going to be a little more nuanced, how do you compare average life expectancy with folk like Jo Cox who were murdered young for example? For our purposes, it's a good indication that you can't really say one way or the other - there will always be soft and gentle easy living Labour MPs and hard drinking cigar swilling Tories. Basically we need more really hard winters and more buses on the roads to cull them further.

So I'm up to 1997 on the 70+ update - 460+ names already - and it has to be said, covid has certainly caught a few dozen ex-MPs based on the March to May 2020 deaths I've come across. Unfortunately I've know got the fun tasks of checking the DOB on all those sweet New Labour MPs for 1997 to look forward too....
Deathrace 1,176 Posted May 26, 2020 7 hours ago, YoungWillz said: Just from a feeling I get from recording the deaths of MPS over the last three years rather than statistically, Labour MPs tend to die younger, Tories tend to get to mid-eighties and early nineties. There are the exceptions, obviously, but Tories dying in their 70s is very much the exception, Labour MPs dying in their late 80s or above very much the exception. I think that's right. Huge percentage of Tory MPs seem to die in the 85-95 age range. Very few get past 95.
Deathrace 1,176 Posted May 26, 2020 Since Alan Clark died in 1999, only one sitting Conservative MP (Eric Forth in 2006) has died of natural causes. Michael Colvin died in a house fire in 2000. No sitting Conservative MP has died in 14 years. In that time about 30 Labour MPs have died. Given we are talking about probably 700-800 different people, that's a remarkable stat. I share your grief at his apparent survival, GC..... "COVID - doesn't kill Conservatives." It's a strapline Cummings would be proud of! 1

Showed up in that Thatcher doc last year looking half fucked, I flagged him up as a sooner than later DDP hit at the time. If you can stomach it (yes, we know who can and can't already), Episode 2 has a surprisingly well looking John Nott running down the first Cabinet and noting there's "only four of us breathing". Rogues gallery below: Pic 1 – Norman Lamont Pic 2 – Sean’s cuddly uncle Pic 3- A rather frail looking Shirley Williams Pic 4 – Jonathan Aitken, as seen on DDP inside 10 years Pic 5 – David Owen Pic 6 – Lord Gowrie who looked half-fucked Pic 7 – 85 year old Kenneth Baker. Will see his 90s imo. Pic 8 – Heseltine Pic 9 – Sir Norman Fowler Pic 10 – David Howell (b 1936) who looks like a current front bencher. YoungWillz 21,208 Posted May 30, 2020 On the back of the above and without prejudice to my right to change my mind @msc, Bernard Ingham is going on my Poker Team (opens in a couple of days, the pest control people are still in, sanitising the whole complex).

Just to note that article says the (until recently current) Lord Ogmore has died recently. As he isn't as fame seeking as most of his family, this went completely by this forum and seemingly twitter too. Also I didn't know Aitken is stepfather to Jared Harris off Mad Men. Ingham was in such unusually charitable form for Bernard Ingham in his anecdotes I did wonder if he was burying hatchets ASAP ahead of snuffing it, but a year on he still persists.

Wow, Ogmore isn't even dead on the Parliamentary website! You know what Aitken's like, probably didn't wait til Ogmore was dead before having the funeral!

An interesting observation. His passing may not have happened in the timeframe that your hunch suspected but If Ingham was aware of some developments in his own health that lead him to feel he was quite time limited and thus wanted to bury hatchets? Then your point would definitely still stand and it could be a case of definitely watch this space!
