It's interesting to see that there were as  many as 50 MPs aged 90 or over 3 years ago yet when I drew up a list about 5 years ago there were only 29. What accounts for such a big increase in such a short space of time ?!

On the peerage Google group, it was confirmed earlier today that with the death of Lord Tombs, there are now 54 living peers aged 90+ 

The 28 names not listed above were the ones thrown out of the Lords in 1999 when they removed most of the hereditaries.

As Willz is updating the MP masterlist, here is my promised update of surviving government members, now up to the fall of Thatcher in 1990, because she had fuckloads of folk still alive.

 

Surviving members of the UK government from 1957-90. There's a lot of crossover between them, so I just listed them under their PM, with their year of birth and notable jobs for ease of access.

Best job title is still "Comptroller of the Household", which sounds made up, but is apparently an important government dogsbody role.

We already know deaths are up from heart attacks et al. in places like NYC, which has been attributed in large part to uncaught Covid cases. Wouldn't be surprised if that was the same case here.

Yup, and with the UK not counting non-hospital deaths in the daily numbers regardless of COD on death certificates, you might also have people not wanting to acknowledge Covid as a cause in order to reduce public drama.

 

(I know this sounds like a conspiracy theory more than anything, but I'm slightly more open to those these days given the mess we're currently facing).

Indeed, but you can't assume coronavirus the cause of every ail in the world. Old people are still going to die of natural causes like they do every time there isn't a pandemic.

It works both ways though. 

For example, there are people who are included in the number of daily death stats who HAD the virus (having caught it in their hospital bed) but died of something else, and would have died otherwise. 

I reckon it about balances out and the death stats are fairly accurate.

Yes, it may sound callous, but everybody will die, and nobody will die more than once. 

So in the case of those dying "with" CV19 who are either very old and/or very ill, a death now is a death less a little later on, regardless of CV19.

@Ulitzer95 I'm sure we confirmed Leigh Rayment's death (1st Feb 2019) last year but the search engine is failing me at 2am.

 

Anyhow, the domain on his website expired last month so after 20 years Rayment's Peerage and MP info pages are no more.
