Fiji's President Josefa Iloilo, 88, who has often been mentioned hereabouts, is to retire next month.

Dead. http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/world/67897/...-president-dies

I'm gobsmacked that Ratu Iloilo hasn't got a UK obituary yet. He was a often mentioned in the British press when he was alive and was a significant figure in Melanesian politics for many years. The two teams who picked him on the DDP possibly have similar concerns.

Iloilo was also the paramount chief of the district of Viseisei in Fiji's Ba Province (just up the road from the airport, for the benefit of anyone who's ever visited Fiji), where the consumption of kava is still practised with enthusiastic vigour. Traditionally when a great ruler such as Iloilo dies, the menfolk hold a several day long vigil consuming gallons of the stuff and getting so numbed in body and mind that they are unable to even speak for up to a week. I doubt that there is anywhere in the world right now where the male populace are more incapable of anything than they are here.

Obit will probably be in the Independent within the next couple of months, with most papers struggling and under pressure to prioritise and save space etc. stuff like this is considered less relevant

Fat Jo got the "in brief" obituary at the bottom of the page in the Independent on Wednesday but it's not online. So idk.

In other news, former Dutch state secretary (a second class minister) for Education and Science Klaas de Jong died 28 february 2011, the day after his 85th birthday. I couldn't find an English language news source.

Geraldine Ferraro, Walter Mondale's 1984 presidential running mate, has died aged 75.

It might be said she paved the way for politicians such as Hilary Clinton and (insert name of prominent female US politician, as appropriate).

Madame Ngo Dinh Nhu

Vietnam's former "first lady" (actually the sister-in-law of President Ngo Ding Diem who was a bachelor) has died in Rome aged 86. "Madame Nhu was often referred to as the Dragon Lady and was known for her harsh remarks about Buddhists. She went into exile in Italy after the death of the two brothers in a coup on November 1, 1963 supported by the United States".

Garret Fitzgerald, twice Prime Minister of Ireland in the 1980s, is gravely ill. He might struggle to see the weekend, let alone 2012.

So Gordon Brown's relationship with God was closer than we thought it seems...

as always the first thing anyone says when an MP dies is , how big was his majority?

Isn't that a rather personal question?

Isn't he the second anti-Brown rebel to die since Brown lost office (I can recall making a post saying someone deserved to die for crossing our Great Leader.

Anyway - this could be very convenient for Andy Kerr who lost his seat in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday...

Cairns used to be a Catholic Priest...before taking up with his boyfriend.
