Political Frailty

It looks like the Liberal Democrats are officially extinct as far as the European Parliament is concerned. Look like they're not going to have one single MEP

They've got one that they literally stole of the Greens by 7k votes in London.

Literally?

http://www.oxforddic...glish/literally

The usage of the word in that context is sanctioned by the Oxford English Dictionary. FYI

Is that sanctioned by the first definition or the second? :P However, two men have been arrested, so maybe it was literally stolen (in the literal sense).

he was looking very frail ..had that fading look in his eyes that says he might only have a year or 2 at most...seemed very confused suggesting senility. He's deteriorated a lot in the last year or 2 clearly

He looked ready to drop any second really. On the other hand, let's not forget the fact that he's on the 2014 DL.

One of my friends was at dinner with Lord Carrington not too long ago, said he's fine.

Albert McQuarrie, 96, is my former MP (Alex Samond unseated him). I saw him at a political meeting not too long ago, and he's just released his autobiography. He seems to be in top form.

It's obviously going to take decades to whittle down that list but you can make a start with Benjamin Whitaker http://www.hamhigh.c...ed_79_1_3638606

How about this guy for an "active" nonagenarian: Lyndon LaRouche

Some older DLers (or just the more politically-minded ones) might know or remember the name. A multiple-time U.S. fringe presidential candidate, and general crank or anti-establishment-type figure.

Born in 1922, he'll be 92 in September and he has his own seemingly weekly internet broadcast in which he gives long rambling answers to questions about politics and current events, that go on so long you forget what the original fucking question was. And he also has made regular appearances on the Alex Jones show in he last few years.

Apparently he believes the world (or at least, the Middle East and the U.S.) is controlled or being manipulated by "the British Empire" (which, yes, he talks about in the present tense).

Oh also I'm proposing a new rule, from now anyone else who makes a post which quotes that entire fucking MP list of Deathray's in full, will be banned on the spot.

There is currently an assumption that if Cameron loses or fails to win a majority at the 2015 election his leadership will be called into question with the four horseman of the apocolypse (Osbourne, May, Johnson & Gove) being touted as possible successors.

But things do not always fall out the way that everyone expects. Who, for instance, could have predicted IDS replacing William Hague after his defeat in 2001.

The question I have is will there be a leadership candidate who stands up for the centre right in the same way that Ken Clark always used to? Looking at the front bench it is difficult to see who such a champion might be but I have been wondering whether Zac Goldsmith's posturing in the media might be a precusor to such a challange.

I also think that as well as the front runners you need to keep an eye on Eric Pickles, Grant Shaps and the possible unity candidacy of William Hague (again).

You know, for all the talk about how unpredictable the election is going to be, now I somehow I just see the status quo continuing.

Somehow I think Cammers will stay on as Prime Minister. Ed Miliband is an absolutely awful excuse for a leader. And despite the brutality of some of Cameron/Osborne's cutting, and how much I personally dislike both of the gormless cunts, I still dislike Ed Miliband more and I think many will do the same. Certainly as far as I'm concerned Miliband becoming PM would be an absolute disaster. I thought about voting for Labour but unless something drastic changes that's off the table now, I'm absolutely not going to.

Oh and Boris definitely won't become leader. He's been caught cheating on his wife hasn't he, and everyone knows only lefties are allowed to cheat on their wives - it makes them lovable, (even sexy) rogues whereas if someone who advocates anything less than digging up the corpse of Stalin and appointing it as supreme leader of the universe is caught cheating, it proves what heartless evil bastards they are. You forgot the rules for a second there didn't you.

What seems to make Ed Milliband a bad leader are newspaper headlines saying what a bad leader he is.

Serious question - who as a potential floating voter would make you think that the Labour party was a palatable alternative?

There is also the issue of where all the LD voters have gone. I do not think they would naturally go to the Conservatives but Labour needs to win them over to hope to form a government.

Your comment about the issue of fidelity and potential for party leadership probably has more to do with attitudes in the rank and file party membership rather than a media conspiracy.

Absolutely nobody from the current Labour party. Because if they're deluded enough to elect him, and then carry on supporting him despite how shit he is, they're obviously all as bad as him...

No it is what I said it is actually, not the party attitudes. Thanks anyway!

P.S. if you can find an example of a BBC reporter or other supposed "mainstream" journalist calling anyone such as Paddy Ashdown or Bill Clinton a "nasty piece of work" on air because they cheated on their wives, I'll take that claim back. Good luck with that, btw....

None of the resignations from the current coalition have been directly related to extra-marital relationships. In fact the last person to lose his job because of this was David Blunkett. I think generally people are more tolerant of the existence of affairs but when the people involve either take advantage of their position or lie to cover up the affair then public anger is raised and resignations tend to follow.

John Major’s government did suffer a bit of a witch hunt on this subject but they became hostages to fortune by promoting the Back to Basics campaign for moral renewal.

As for Bill Clinton everyone knew what he was when he was re-elected in 1996 but voters looked past his personal life to see his politics and the subsequent impeachment was politically motivated. If Hilary had not backed him then history may well have been different but she was very Tammy Wynette about it, but was she just playing the long game?

You say there is no-one on the Labour front bench team you would trust because they voted for Red Ed but it was the Union block vote that got him across the line and I think he has shown that he is not just a union man. However any protests of support from his colleagues is the requirement of a collective responsibility of the front bench no-one wants to commit political suicide by directly going up against the leader, however if the beast was wounded the hyenas would circle, but politicians of all colours behave like this.

But it is this point that I want to focus on is that clearly from your response as someone who is naturally on the right of UK politics you cannot see a leader who reaches out to you across the centre ground. I am in the same boat but from a different perspective, I do not see the One Nation Conservative leader who would allow me to consider them as an alternative to the options on the left that I would usually go for. Where have all the Ken Clarkes gone?
