Spade_Cooley 9,536 Posted August 30, 2016 I'll go back to the darts metaphor rather than the tennis one because I'm so goddamn working class, but the Van Gerwen/Taylor analogy is the one that rings truest when comparing me to DDT. The level of darts Van Gerwen has been playing over the past three years is easily the finest darts ever played, but Taylor is still the greatest player of all time at the moment. He's also a convicted sex offender, I think I might have mentioned that somewhere before. If The Living End had the media landscape we have today (where the Daily Mail have opened up the obituary doors to infinitely more US and Australian picks, as well as the Mirror helping out on the cancer mum front) or the additional social media research opportunities, they would have hit bigger scores during the late 2000s/early 2010s.
Spade_Cooley 9,536 Posted August 30, 2016 But then it's always the same debate in sport: most "great" footballers of the 50s and 60s would get shown up by today's West Brom side, but if they were given the training/nutritional/tactical advantage of a modern day player they would exceed yr Messi/CR7/Alfonso Alves levels. Bibliogryphon 9,586 Posted August 30, 2016 8. Stab in the DarkTwice runner up (2006 and 2007), the second time only losing out to an obscure unique joker nabbing an Independent QO. Equal 5th on the all time Hits list, 7th on the points list, and organiser of the Hartlepool Deadlypool. Ali's statistical analytic lists make mine and Bibliogryphon's look positively calm. Gone off the boil in recent years due to some whim/old age picks not coming off, but certainly one of the best DDPers of all time, and arguably the finest to never win the title. Glad I got a mention in this list even if it was as a list compiler who is not as psychotic and insightfull as other posters. Thanks msc for all your work. msc 18,476 Posted August 30, 2016 I only really watched darts when Sid Waddell was around. I saw some of the UK Open (?) on ITV4 earlier this year and had only really hard of the convicted sex offender. 8. Although, as Deathlist top chap Grim Reaper once noted, scoring with an old age hit out of nowhere is more satisfying than predicting the terminally ill going. The team scored a unique 13th of the month bonus on Blake's Seven star Gareth Thomas. Bibliogryphon is better known on the Deathlist forum for his stewardship of the Byelection Bingo and the Scavenger Hunt Deadpool, the latter of which is currently annoying me as I wished I'd picked Hanif Mohammed in the cricket section. He shares yours truly's love of the list, and seems to take light-hearted jokes about this better than a random hypothetical person might have taken an edited out joke above about "TMIB having the patience of a saint, as seen by him spending three years with Deathray bemoaning every aspect of the DDP without ordering a hitman". *innocent face*.He is also Bibliogryphon's Bookworm Food, which finished 7th in the Theme Team League of 2014. msc 18,476 Posted September 17, 2016 The death of Gabriele Amorth had me wondering how many survivors there were from my Deathrace teams. 2012 - Clive James, Penny Marshall, Manuel Noriega, Leslie Philips, Mary Wilson, Peregrine Worsthorne (6/20) 2013 - Ryan sodding Buell, Judy Blume, Bob Dole, Mark Eden, Nicholas Edwards, Michael Jopling, Danny Kirwan, Robert Mugabe, Freddie Starr (9/20) 2014 - Heinz Kessler*, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Freeman Dyson, Frank Bough, Clare Hollingworth (5/20) 2015 - Zhou Youguang, Zoltan Sarosy, Shivakumara Swanjii, Barys Kit, Gillo Dorfles, Clare Hollingworth (6/20) 2016 - Keith Farnham, Bishop Robinson, Joost van der Westhuizen, Mary Wilson, Nobby Stiles (5/20) I wonder which year will be first to face a full wipeout - 2015 is favourite given all of them are centenarians, but I've a feeling sods law will see one of them still kicking long after younger picks have gone. *He's still alive? Spade_Cooley 9,536 Posted November 1, 2016 Was watching Teacher's Pet (1958) the other day, and while my first instinct was "wait, is Gig Young the only murderer to have won an Academy Acting award?", I was later drawn to the fact that while Clark Gable was dead in 1960, Doris Day, who plays his quasi-romantic foil, is still with us in 2016. At least a 56 year gap. Is there any other greater disparities in the years of death between two actors starring as romantic leads in a major movie?

Spade_Cooley 9,536 Posted November 1, 2016 Yeah, Flynn pips Gable by one year, although I fancy Day to have more time left on this earth than OdH. I'd have thought the obvious male component here would be Leslie Howard, but I'm drawing blanks looking through his filmography so far.

Handrejka 1,904 Posted November 1, 2016 The 1921 romantic drama The Conquering Power's leads were Rudolph Valentino (died 1926) and Alice Terry (died 1987). 61 years. There's also Bed and Sofa (1927) aka Tretya Meshchanskaya. charon 4,943 Posted November 5, 2016 Bacall was 57 after Bogart, so pips Gable/Day by a year. But Lollobrigida is 59 & counting (Beat the Devil) after Bogart.

Tyrone Power died 1958 (all right, he died during filming their film and it was recast) so 58 + counting. and Errol Flynn , died the next year, so 57 + counting. msc 18,476 Posted December 22, 2016 A remarkable coincidence I've just noticed. I'll be looking out for who the Deathlist Committee select in the number 14 spot on the 2017 list, as it turns out that spot has form. Not only has it produced fifteen hits (surely a record for an individual spot on the list), but such is the regularity of people listed in that spot dying soon after, only two people have ever held it to date and are still with us: Mike Ditka and Herman Wouk. Otherwise... 1987 – Barbara Cartland (d. 2000) 1989 – Mike Ditka (alive) 1990 - Ronald Reagan (d. 2004) 1991 – Denis Compton (d. 1997) 1992 – Joe Fagan (d. 2001) 1993 – Bill Bixby (HIT) 1994 – Fidel Castro (d. 2016) 1995 – Dean Martin (HIT) 1996 – Tim Gullikson (HIT) 1997 – Hastings Banda (HIT) 1998 – Joan Hickson (HIT) 1999 – Quentin Crisp (HIT) 2000 – Ian Dury (HIT) 2001 – Lord Longford (HIT) 2002 – Spike Milligan (HIT) 2003 – Edward Teller (HIT) 2004 – Henri Cartier Bresson (HIT) 2005 – John Mills (HIT) 2006 – Patrick Moore (d. 2012) 2007 – Claude Levi-Strauss (d. 2009) 2008 – Alexander Solzehnitsyn (HIT) 2009 – Seve Ballesteros (d. 2011) 2010 – Herman Wouk (alive) 2011 – Geoffrey Hughes (d. 2012) 2012 – Patty Andrews (d. 2013) 2013 – Gough Whitlam (d. 2014) 2014 – Chris Woodhead (d. 2015) 2015 – Patrick Macnee (HIT) 2016 – Nancy Reagan (HIT) The last six had one Christmas left in their lives, and Seve looked to avoid it before his cancer came right back. It's just a statistical coincidence, but having seen it, I'm interested to see if it holds up. Also, short of a deluge in the last 9 days, Deathlist 2016 will be the least successful year in which the Number One spot provides a hit this century, and since 1996 in general. It's been the harbinger of 12/50 at the very least each time this century, there's a stat which is going to fall by the wayside. Bit like the Republicans never getting Penn.
Death Impends 7,979 Posted January 4, 2017 As discussed in the "Predict the Drop 40" thread, out of curiosity and boredom a few weeks back I compiled retrospective Drop 40s, for the years before 2011. (back then, the yearly stats page only included the top 10-25) 2003 I ignored because only 20 or so people participated. Some wanted to see these tallies, so without further ado...2004: 1 Ronald Reagan 292 Pope John Paul II 283 Margaret Thatcher 164 John Mills 155 George Best 135 Edward Heath 137 Zsa Zsa Gabor 128 Ronnie Biggs 119 Princess Alice 109 Kirk Douglas 109 Michael Foot 1012 Patrick Moore 912 Fay Wray 914 Arthur C. Clarke 814 Rev Billy Graham 814 Saddam Hussein 814 Boris Yeltsin 818 Yasser Arafat 718 Charlton Heston 718 Michael Jackson 718 Nelson Mandela 718 Elizabeth Taylor 718 Sir Norman Widsom 724 Ian Brady 624 James Callaghan 624 Larry Hagman 624 Alex Higgins 624 Liza Minnelli 629 Charlotte Benkner 529 King Fahd of Saudi Arabia 529 Gerald Ford 529 Ian Huntley 529 Estee Lauder 529 Pervez Musharraf 529 Prince Philip 529 Augusto Pinochet 529 Prince Rainier of Monaco 529 Max Schmeling 529 Eric Sykes 5This technically is 39 names, not 40. God knows how many further names were only on 4 teams - even though I know the protocol is to include all the names who tie for the 40th. Kirk and Rev Billy have appeared on every Drop 40 since, as did Zsa Zsa, but she won't appear on 2017's for obvious reasons. 2005: 1 Pope John Paul II 862 Ronnie Biggs 532 Margaret Thatcher 534 Kirk Douglas 495 Gerald Ford 456 Sir John Mills 366 Elizabeth Taylor 368 Michael Foot 338 Edward Heath 3310 Augusto Pinochet 3211 Zsa Zsa Gabor 2912 George Best 2712 Rev Ian Paisley 2712 Max Schmeling 2715 James Callaghan 2215 Rev Billy Graham 2215 Richard Pryor 2218 Sir Norman Wisdom 2119 Eddie Albert 2019 Arthur C. Had no idea Ernest Borgnine went back this long in terms of DDP popularity - he'll only miss one Drop 40 (2009) after this until he dies. 2007: 1 Fidel Castro 2422 Margaret Thatcher 1853 Ariel Sharon 1754 Ronnie Biggs 1595 Kirk Douglas 1406 Muhammad Ali 1087 Charlton Heston 978 Rev Billy Graham 929 Pete Doherty 8610 Michael Foot 8110 Harold Pinter 8112 Elizabeth Taylor 7913 Brooke Astor 7814 Lady Bird Johnson 7715 Tammy Faye Bakker Messner 7116 Henry Allingham 7017 Sir Norman Wisdom 6818 Zsa Zsa Gabor 6718 Patrick Moore 6718 Jane Tomlinson 6721 Barzan Ibrahim Al-Tikriti 6322 Stephen Hawking 6023 Luciano Pavarotti 5824 Awad Hamed Al-Bandar 5625 Bobby Robson 5126 Nelson Mandela 4827 Farrah Fawcett 4528 Ian Huntley 4229 Emiliano Mercado del Toro 3930 Prince Philip 3731 Boris Yeltsin 3732 John Forsythe 3632 Rev Ian Paisley 3632 Mickey Rooney 3635 Ernest Borgnine 3535 Jerry Lewis 3535 Nancy Reagan 3538 George H. W. Bush 3439 Estelle Getty 3339 Larry Hagman 3339 Bernard Manning 33 Good timing for Manning and Yeltsin, who debut or reappear and die. Estelle Getty falls off next year, though, when she dies. 2008: 1 Fidel Castro 2222 Margaret Thatcher 1933 Ariel Sharon 1714 Ronnie Biggs 1635 Kirk Douglas 1396 Sir Bobby Robson 1237 Amy Winehouse 1228 Muhammad Ali 1149 Rev Billy Graham 10710 Charlton Heston 9611 Zsa Zsa Gabor 8811 Sir Norman Wisdom 8813 Michael Foot 8514 Elizabeth Taylor 8215 Henry Allingham 7716 Patrick Moore 7517 Prince Philip 7418 Pete Doherty 7019 Betty Ford 6620 Farrah Fawcett 6521 Harold Pinter 6222 Nelson Mandela 6123 Russell Watson 5624 Nancy Reagan 5424 Britney Spears 5426 Stephen Hawking 5227 Mickey Rooney 5028 Pervez Musharraf 4829 Jerry Lewis 4730 Karl Malden 4631 Ernest Borgnine 4531 Tony Hart 4531 Ian Huntley 4534 Liz Dawn 4335 George H. W. Bush 3535 Arthur C. Clarke 3535 Alex Higgins 3535 Edna Parker 3539 Jimmy Carter 3439 Archbishop Christodoulos 3439 Albert Hofmann 34As mentioned in the other thread, I thought Christodoulos appearing on this list was the most interesting discovery from this research. Far from a household name, but his forthcoming death and assured obit was trumpeted aplenty on DL in the final months of 2007. Which, as it turns out, was just enough even back then. Carter sneaks in, which surprises me. Also the last year the world's oldest woman appears as a Drop 40 pick, though not the last appearance by the world's oldest person period, as future DDP participant Jiroemon Kimura appeared in 2013. 2009: 1 Margaret Thatcher 2092 Patrick Swayze 2033 Sir Bobby Robson 2024 Fidel Castro 2005 Ronnie Biggs 1685 Sir Norman Wisdom 1687 Wendy Richard 1418 Kirk Douglas 1389 Ariel Sharon 13310 Rev Billy Graham 11211 Edward Kennedy 10811 Amy Winehouse 10813 Henry Allingham 9414 Zsa Zsa Gabor 8914 Jade Goody 8916 Seve Ballesteros 8817 Muhammad Ali 8617 Patrick Moore 8619 Michael Foot 8319 Elizabeth Taylor 8321 Prince Philip 8122 Barack Obama 7523 Paul Gascoigne 6824 Farrah Fawcett 6724 Betty Ford 6724 Nelson Mandela 6727 Liz Dawn 5628 Peter Falk 5529 Tony Hart 5329 Harry Patch 5331 Nancy Reagan 5232 Sir Richard Attenborough 5033 Abdelbaset Al Megrahi 4634 Karl Malden 4535 Susan Atkins 4435 Michael Jackson 4437 Mickey Rooney 4237 Yitzhak Shamir 4239 Stephen Hawking 4139 Steve Jobs 41A reminder of how solid 2009 was in terms of high-profile picks carking it - 12 of these names died and lots of them were the obvious picks (Swayze, Robson, Kennedy, Atkins). Incidentally, had the Drop 40 bonus existed then, a Goody or Jackson joker would deliver 30 points! 2010: 1 Margaret Thatcher 2402 Abdelbaset Al Megrahi 2323 Ronnie Biggs 2274 Fidel Castro 1805 Sir Norman Wisdom 1666 Kirk Douglas 1457 Ariel Sharon 1178 Rev Billy Graham 1089 Elizabeth Taylor 10710 Zsa Zsa Gabor 10311 Michael Foot 9912 Nelson Mandela 9813 Seve Ballesteros 9014 Muhammad Ali 8815 Patrick Moore 8316 Betty Ford 8116 Prince Philip 8118 Zelda Rubinstein 7619 Kim Jong-il 7420 Peter Falk 6820 Stephen Hawking 6822 Simon MacCorkindale 6422 Amy Winehouse 6424 John Hartson 5925 Dennis Hopper 5526 Bruce Forsyth 5427 Nancy Reagan 5128 Paul Gascoigne 4529 Ronnie James Dio 4430 Jerry Lewis 4330 Sara Payne 4332 Pete Doherty 4233 Ernest Borgnine 3933 Oscar Niemeyer 3933 Mickey Rooney 3936 Liz Dawn 3836 Steve Jobs 3838 Sir Richard Attenborough 3738 Dame Vera Lynn 3738 Eli Wallach 37 Last year Winehouse or Jobs appear, only for them to snuff it the very next...

Joey Russ 7,228 Posted January 7, 2017 God knows how many further names were only on 4 teamsGood question: The answer is 14. Here they are:Ali, Muhammad Barrymore, Michael bin Laden, Osama Bush, George H W Castro, Fidel Havel, Vaclav Miller, Arthur Papon, Maurice Rayner, Claire Richards, Keith Rooney, Mickey Suharto Vandross, Luther Widmark, Richard Interestingly, none of them were actually hits that year. That means 53 have been 4 or more teams that year. Because I have some time on my hands, I've decided to calculate 2003 "drop 40". For that year, it means everyone who were on 3 or more teams. And the total amount of celebrities who were on 3 or more teams was... 53!!! So here was the "40" most popular picks. I didn't bother to rank them though. Alice, Princess Ali, Muhammad Arafat, Yasser Barrymore, Michael Baxter, Raymond Best, George Biggs, Ronnie bin Laden, Osama Boycott, Geoff Brady, Ian Cash, Johnny Chiang Kai-shek, Madame Clarke, Arthur C Clough, Brian Daisley, Paul Dennis, Les Ferguson, Major Ron Foot, Michael Fredriksson, Marie Gabor, Zsa Zsa Havel, Vaclav Heath, Edward Hepburn, Katherine Heston, Charlton Higgins, Alex Hird, Thora Hongo, Kamato Hope, Bob Hussein, Saddam John Paul II, Pope Johnson, Lady Bird Lewis, Jerry Mandela, Nelson Mills, John Minelli, Liza Monkhouse, Bob Moore, Patrick Murdoch, Rupert Osbourne, Sharon Painting, Norman Palmer, Arnold Philip, Prince Pinochet, Augusto Rainier of Monaco, Prince Reagan, Ronald Riefenstahl, Leni Suharto Thatcher, Denis Thatcher, Margaret Thurmond, Strom Wray, Fay Yeltsin, Boris Zevon, Warren Some of these names on here would never make the drop 40 these days, not because of the illness they have, but because they aren't names that a regular dead pooler would pick up on. In case your wondering on Douglas and Castro, Douglas was only on two teams, while Castro would've been a unique hit had he died back in 2003. Also, would that make Denis and Margaret Thatcher the only couple in history to make the drop 40? That is interesting to see actually.

I allude to, of course, the long awaited Drop 40 debut of Anne Douglas.

I might've missed a few, so please inform me who I missed, plus the four teams jokers when they get added if they are different, but that is really a lot of jokers. I might post a thread for it later tonight.
