So, How's Your 2017 Shortlist Looking?

Recommended Posts

I think it's also worth noting that uniques is no longer something that will pay off as much as teams that have a lot of people in the drop 40 . Not saying all 20 of your members need to be drop 40 contenders, but carefully selecting the right ones will help you next year.

I'd also add, it's worth focusing on people who are likely to die.

Do they do Irony 101 at your school?

Shameless are returning? That's a shame.

My problem is: without Shameless a couple of these non-entities would enter the main teams.

Also, I hoped for a more drastic rule change.

I admit however, that letting Shameless die after one successful year, has its' charms. But then "sister of Carol McGiffin" will be my replacement for Craig Sager in my Main team. You will all be picking her anyway, so I won't feel particularly guilty.

And there is one other thing: Even if I don't pick them, someone else will. And then that pick has a higher chance of being unique, giving these picks even more weight in the main competition. Just looking at the current Top Ten: Hassan Asif, Jade Pateman, Sonny Lang,...

Yes, but a few scattered through 100 teams is less obvious than one trying to win the whole thing with 20, imo anyhow. Plus I feel you'll be aiming for a top 5 spot with The Love Boat anyhow...

That five-year-old Sunderland fan really is making actual research impossible at the moment.

So is the ten year old Bradley kid and the Jeopardy contestant who died before the show aired.

No, hang on, that's Diana Rots's shortlist...

Still, got to feel for them - you have to go right down to Poochie just to get 20 names...

Christie or Halpin as joker for Diana Rots?

In my DP I run there are categories, one of which is TV/Hollywood. I don't honestly think Shannen Doherty is gonna die in 2017 but I need two people and she's the only one in over 200 names that qualifies other than Kilmer---and no fucking way Kilmer is dying in 2017. Lend a brother a hand and give me a name I'm forgetting (caveat has to be at least slightly recognizable to Americans). its also 100- age for points so no 97 year olds like Huston Smith I'm already considering

Sidney Poitier. Or maybe Zsa Zsa Gabor even though she's immortal...

Keeping a modern Deathlist forum tradition alive...

Been keeping in touch with that pal who works in Brinsworth House? Got your Telegraph subscription up to date, and a moleskine notebook close to hand? Or perhaps you've got a super secret unique dead cert that you are going to spend most of December fearing gcreptile mentions in the Ideas thread?

The one person I was hoping to be the most likely to be unique has been spoiled by Spade. Much research harder...

Nasty cancer? Check. Aiming to have it treated via a combination of homeopathy and God? Check.

No mentions of note, even in passing, in the DDP QOs, ever? Check. Reliant on a bored Guardian journalist and a slow news week in 2017? Check.

I've got my Delpech dilemma sorted for the next eleven days then.

Trimmed down another 3 names right now. The first one is because I could never find their last name, even though they would score a lot of points. Obit risks as well. The second one is a matter of not being sure if they are alive or not. The third one will no doubt make the drop 40, but I feel people are jumping to the worse case scenario and not thinking of less deadly possibility (hence why he's only a sub on my shadow list right now).

This 'miracle cure for early stage pancreatic' is a bit of a blow for 2018 lists.

Fucking NHS.

I know, and it's making research more difficult as well.

Down to under 50 names (devastating cuts ahead in the coming days... if that seems long, it was well over 100 at the month's beginning!) and think I got my risky obit pick settled on as well. Soon I'll have to tackle the ol' "are they a bit fraudulent or just lucky to last this long?" and "no updates on their could-go-either-way cancer in a long while" dilemmas.

Ah yes, looking over coy folk on the shortlist and wondering "how ill are you?" I've consigned most of them to the scrapheap short of news in the next few days.

Shortlists got 42 names on it, though many of those are "in case of emergency" standbys. Strangely of the first draft team I wrote in July, only three are still hoping for a spot.

I've got Billy Graham and Peter Sallis on there in case their's a huge amount of dead cancer sufferers.

Reminds me to put Pan Breed favourite Mary Wilson into one of my teams. I didn't this year and it just looks wrong.

The very first name I ever wrote down for any deadpool, anywhere, before you ask, ages ago (2009ish). I try to include her on at least one deadpool a year out of tradition, like my very own Clive Dunn.

I'll likely put June Foray down as my third sub this year, even though she's not on my actual TJS shortlist. My little way of acknowledging my own personal perennial on my main DDP team without actually using her, as the odds of a team reaching the third alternate when it's submitted hours before the deadline are minimal.

I'm working on my first ever list after watching the site from the shadows for quite a few years. Been a tough one. I'm trying to get a balance of people from various fields and generations but its tough to cull my list. One moment I'm thinking, Person A is good shot because of their age then I think Person B is a better choice because they have an chronic illness known to knock a few years off.

Definitely will have to look at a theme list just to get some of them off the main one.

I think I'm at one of those stages that I fear my team may not do well in the DDP. Do the veterans ever have this feeling that their teams might not do so well? I still have hope in my current team though.
