    48. Tom Baker

That's right, the big guy gets his own thread after his appearance on BBC1 tonight reminded me to start a fucking thread for him. Tom Baker, The Doctor Who to anyone with a vague awareness of the show, is 86 now, and has apparently been in frail health the last few years after a lifetime of booze started to catch up. Apart from his 7 year lead role in Doctor Who and its lifetime of pop culture references, he was also famously Rasputin in Nicholas and Alexandra. He's also the narrator of Little Britain, Captain Redbeard in Blackadder and the voodoo loving artist in Vault of Horror. Anyhow, here he is on BBC1 an hour ago: Proper future DL front pager.

The Wonderful World of Artificial Intelligence?

I saw this online, thought it was slightly interesting: Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Indian politician and one of the drol immortals "comes to life with AI" to give a message to voters: The original video was posted by his party. Will we see more of this in the future, political parties generating statements and messages by severely ill or dead politicians with artificial intelligence?

    Deadpool Detective Work

Was just wondering if anyone could give a more specific date of death for actress Jennifer Hill (IMDb). Last year it was revealed that she had had an brief fling with Sir David Jason in the 60s that resulted in her becoming pregnant and having a daughter, when this was announced at the end of March articles used the present tense to describe her, signifying she was possibly still alive, however Toby Hadoke included her in his in memoriam video in December, signifying she had died by that point. This makes me assume she died some-point between late March and December 2023, however it is possible that she had died earlier than that and the affair revelations only came out because she was dead. It's a common name but we do have a year (1936) and a location of birth (Port Talbot, Wales), anyone have any ideas.

Formula 1 & Other Motor Racing

Alonso was managed by Briatore, he was always going to Renault, and they weren't actually that competitive in 2001/2002 (although they proved to be in 2003 admittedly). The move to McLaren was well-timed, but he ran into Hamilton and we all know what happened next. Couldn't stay at McLaren, so moved back to Renault, but they were on the decline - still managed 2 wins though (the first in very controversial circumstances it turned out). Moved to Ferrari, regular frontrunners, who had nearly won the title in 2008 and were as likely as any to get to grips with the new regulations that Brawn and Red Bull had taken advantage of, but for much of his time there he was outperforming the car. Should have won the title in 2010, got stuck behind Petrov in Abu Dhabi. The fact he came so close in 2012 in a car that was probably 5th fastest on the grid was astonishing. 2 more uncompetitive years, so moved to McLaren - looked like an exciting move - the return of McLaren-Honda! Except the Honda engine took ages to get up to speed and, once it did (with Red Bull), McLaren discovered their aerodynamics were shit too, which is why the car was so slow, whatever Alonso tried to do. Went away and won Le Mans, had half a shot in his first year at the Indy 500 too until his car broke. Came back to Renault/Alpine who rarely gave him a front-running car, just the odd podium (plus helping his teammate win in Hungary by holding Hamilton up). The move to Aston Martin has definitely been a success, but it's not put him in a race winning car (yet), just a competitive car (his team cost him the win in Monaco last year, despite what he says). He's one of the best drivers on the grid and has been for 20 years and he hasn't been in a title-contending car since, arguably, 2010 or a race winning car since 2014. Agreed. He went to McLaren as undisputed Number 1. Lewis was quick enough to refuse to accept that. Ron Dennis thought "Oh no, not again" and dealt with it about as well as he dealt with Prost and Senna. Ok, not dominant but certainly title-contending. For all the competitiveness (and I have a lot of fondness for 2008, it was a great season, although I'd have preferred it if Glock had stayed ahead to the line and Daddy Massa hadn't been told to stop celebrating), Kubica won one race all season, Raikkonen (defending champion) didn't win after the 4th race of the year. It essentially came down to Massa v Hamilton - Lewis got more poles than anybody and won 5 times to Massa's 6 (although Lewis finished ahead of him in Belgium only to be penalised). And he was comfortably winning the title before the rain in Brazil. He was (is?) an excellent driver, but he was fortunate to be in the class of the field throughout that period. He was a better driver than Rosberg throughout their time together and Mercedes were a much more professional outfit than Ferrari in the battles between Hamilton and Vettel (Vettel went off the boil too). Watched the on board multiple times over the years, Hamilton had room on the inside and was never ahead of Verstappen, Verstappen took the line of the corner, Hamilton was never going to get through there (Verstappen on the outside could carry more speed). Coming in from that tight an angle, Hamilton always knew he'd drift out, he was always going to have understeer and that would take him into Verstappen - he clearly decided if contact happened it happened (he was well behind in the championship, so what's he got to lose?). There's a great video from a guy on Youtube dissecting it (he's very fair, did brilliant videos - he's stopped now for some reason - and doesn't entirely support my point of view, but certainly lays out the facts pretty clearly) which is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enVOLoPzfrE Verstappen couldn't care less if there's an asterisk, and I was just glad to see something different after 6 titles in 7 years. We were promised closer racing last year and Red Bull won 21 out of 22 races. Admittedly, take Red Bull out of the equation and it was a thrilling season, and this season is similarly shaping up to be exciting. But it's no good being close if there's one team taking the top 2 spots most races, certainly if they're not even a close match for each other. My favourite four seasons off the top of my head are 2003 (Schumacher v Raikkonen v Montoya), 2008 (Hamilton v Ferrari v Kubica), 2010 (10 leadership changes over the course of the season, Vettel led only once - after the final race) and 2012 (7 winners in the first 7 races and the season continued similarly). All of them you had no idea who would win on any given weekend. For the past decade we've known either a Mercedes was probably going to win or (now) a Red Bull is likely to win. The best races are usually the ones where that doesn't happen. I, too, have loved McLaren since the days of Mika Hakkinen and it's been painful how far they've fallen, but with Norris and Piastri, they've got a great base and Andrea Stella has made a huge difference. Hope the upgrade in Miami can put them a bit closer. As for the future, we'll find out soon enough - still lots to be decided as to who's where first!

    Video Game Nerds

This thread is for deaths related to the video/console/computer/mobile game industry, i.e. designers, composers, all kinds of programmers or even popular players of certain games. I thought this branch of popular culture was missing here. Of course, this industry is relatively new, so people haven't really started to die away of age, but maybe it starts soon, and people can die for other reasons as well. I'll start with two deaths: James Storey, graphical designer for Duke Nukem 3d, is dead at 41: http://www.vg247.com/2015/06/03/duke-nukem-3d-artist-passes-away-aged-41/ No reason was given. Also, Kirill Prokovsky, composer of music for the Divinity games, especially for Divinity: Original Sin is dead at 53: http://gamingbolt.com/divinity-original-sin-composer-passes-away No reason was given.

    Rupaul And Other Drag Queens

For completeness I'm going to note that the IMDb page for Miss Jason has 2 different people confused. The drag queen Miss Jason (aka Jason Sutton) did appear in Maisie. The other Miss Jason is this British YouTube star, who appears in the Celeste music video. I watched that music video twice earlier and thought I was going mad when I couldn't find him and that's why. Mel C makes an appearance in that music vid strangely enough. So I'm guessing the YouTube star just pops up in random stuff but isn't a "performer" as such given the sensible Equity rule of not allowing the same name to be used by two individuals.

    Golf: The 19th Hole

I missed this last week during the Masters coverage but came across it tonight. In this tribute video for Verne Lundquist, who worked his 40th and final Masters, notice at the 2:15 mark how Nicklaus' left hand/wrist is purple with what looks like senile purpura. We've seen this with a lot of older folks like Mitch McConnell recently. Perhaps he has some cardiovascular issues? Speaking of which, you see a purple spot on Lundquist's right hand at the 3:33 mark. Mr. Lundqvist is quite obese, so he may not be likely to see 90. I'm guessing that neither of them do, and I'm particularly concerned for Jack. (Jack is 84 and Verne is 83, for the record.)

    6. Ethel Kennedy

Her daughter Kerry's instagram page really gives the best clues to her current state of health. The last verifiable photo of her that can be found is of her with former Ukrainian first lady, Kateryna Yushenko which was taken during Labor Day weekend of 2022. There is a video on her page from April 11, 2023 which shows a large group of family members singing happy birthday to her, however, whoever was filming the video was very careful to omit her face which indicates to me that her health has gotten to a stage where the family does not wish for her to be seen. I am fairly certain there will be no more publicly released images of her. The Kennedys are still very much an appearance driven family, and are very restrictive about releasing images that depict its members in ill health. They did the same thing with Rose Kennedy following her debilitating stroke back in either '83 or '84. Rose's 100th birthday in 1990 was a major milestone that much of the Boston media covered, and was marked with numerous interviews with younger family members discussing her contribution to American society and family stability. Despite the major event, no photographs of her were released to the press, which was in stark contrast to her 90th birthday celebration in 1980 where she greeted well wishers and the press from the balcony of her house. To this date, the family has not released any photos of Rose Kennedy during the final decade of her life. The only known photographs of her came from journalists who managed to snap a few pics of Ted Kennedy wheeling her in her wheelchair outside her home sometime in the early 90s.

  25. Yet at the time of the song, she was inviting the paparazzi over to her house to have sex with her and do drugs. There's video of her inviting them over. She was purposefully trying to get pregnant by one of them, Adnan Ghalib, as a way to replace her two children; he was married with children too ofcourse -- that's her type. There's photos of them buying a pregnancy test together at Rite Aid. If you really wanted to do a middle finger to the paparazzi, you wouldn't just move them in with you. No, I don't like her. She was a music industry plant in order to keep other female music artists in line (ie, those who play at Lilith Fair, riotgrrl, female hiphop). Everything about her is fake, and unfortunately influential. She sounded like AI on that Blackout album. Many female artists have complained that the standards now in the studio is to just sing syllables like her so it can be copy/pasted together, rather than just performing music.
