Someone please explain to me why Donna Summer is top? That song is grinding me gears.

Because more people like it than the things you are voting for?

I think Donna Summers track is a classic, conversely Julie Covingtons dirge makes me want to puke, even if there's nothing wrong with the rendition.

What can I say? A lot of what people like or dislike about music is subjective. You voted for The Bay City Rollers was it? After hardly ever hearing them before? Something along those lines. I hate everything they ever did.

Just about everything you like then, I hate. I don't suppose that makes either of us right or wrong, it just is what it is. Well, apart from the bit where you're wrong :P.

True music is subjective but don't think I am voting for a lot of songs (such as Bay City Rollers) just by hearing the songs a few times recently. I am quite into older music and have been for over 20 years. My parents also introduced me to music they grew up with since a young age hence loving The Beatles, The Who, a lot of Motown and Kate Bush.

Julie Covington I don't actually like, but I like Madonna's version of the song and so points to Julie. Also possibly predicting future for how points go and I learnt my lesson a while back about voting for groups/people that are going to 0 sooner rather than later (can you tell I like problem solving puzzles).

So you're voting for a record that isn't actually in the competition.

Make of that what you will.

Also you've now prompted me to be the first person to care enough to be the last vote on one day and the first on the next. Make of that what you will also. Strange.

Voting for something that isn't even there - pfft.

It's nice to see that "Knowing Me Knowing You" has survived Alan Partridge.  Aha!

The Julie Covington version of the song is much more theatrical and Madonna has converted into a Pop Ballad (I don't mind her version but this is the definitive one)

Better than both is Oh What a Circus by David Essex which is to the same tune

I am torn between trying to save songs that are slipping or trying to get my faves into the top 5

Great song. So are Name of the Game and Fernando.

Actually, their weakest of the 5 there for me is Mamma Mia, one of the most internationally popular songs of the 70s. Not bad going.

My favourite ABBA hit was number one a few years later.

I must say, ABBA are hit and miss with me. Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia get on my tits but the others are okay. The Name of the Game is my favourite of the five in this round but even that is no Waterloo.

Sorry, but as far as I'm concerned all I hear with that Abba song is Alan Bloody Partridge.

The vast majority of the songs on this list I find pretty 'meh' to be honest, due in part to having heard them too often over the past 40-odd years.

I mostly avoided Alan Partridge so I don't have that association and I will maintain it is ABBA's best song

There is not a lot in the two year grouping that makes me think absolute classic (probably that and Donna Summer) but I had a look at 78/79 options and apart from a couple of howlers there is going to be some fierce competition

No, that would be The Day Before You Came  :D

Agreed.  So far I've had a clear favourite every time with a sprinkling of tolerable ones, but I think I shall be more relaxed about the next batch as there are a lot that I like.

Never having watched any Alan Partridge when it was first shown I made the mistake of buying the I'm Alan Partridge/Knowing Me, Knowing You boxset a while back. Too much of a one-trick pony as far as I'm concerned. Sure there's some funny bits but  on the whole too repetitive, so much so, I still haven't watched them all. (Though more recently, his rebel-song singing Irish farmer is one of the funniest bits of TV I've seen in years).

The consequence of this is that not only do I hear (and join in) with Aha! every time I hear the song, I find it difficult to unsee Partridge when Coogan plays a serious film role. I do think ABBA's best songs (singles) are the one's that didn't reach number one.

For ABBA, it's roughly a tie between Knowing Me Knowing You and Dancing Queen for my fav out of this batch. Really love the guitar in the former. Though their big hits are always at least decent, and I'm also in camp "best #1 is yet to come".
