gcreptile 10,964 Posted November 2, 2023 Guess we should do a bit of a mop up update. GUB, yes, I missed your second replacement post where you added Nick Hungerford. I think you missed Bob Barker yourself? I have him scored for you. Cpt. Chorizo, you had the Iron Sheik points, but not the Adrian Street points. I must have missed him back then. He's added. The big new hit in this update is Ady Barkan. The health care activist in need of health care was quite a big hit here, picked by quite a few people. You want your points, you'll get them now! Missed by some of those who might have needed him. Indiana college coach Bob Knight was a clever hit for a few people who used him as a mid-year substitution. Bibliogryphon should qualify for some kind of trophy for being the only one to pick Matthew Perry, i.e. Chandler from Friends. I never watched the show, can't give any clever comments. But I think I've read a lot of blind items on him for years. In hindsight, they were all true. He didn't look THAT much of a mess to me. And finally, Sir Bobby Charlton caps this update with a header, as I have learned. A very popular pick here, too. Hope it's all up to date now, here's the score: Rank Team Score 1 Banana 1073 2 gcreptile 981 3 RadGuy 934 4 Cpt. gcreptile 10,964 Posted November 25, 2023 A little update during this well-deserved November break. The big hit this update was Johnny Ruffo, the actor/singer from Australia. The curse of Home and Away strikes once more. He's one of the biggest hits this year, lots of players score and he's one of the youngest hits in the game. Some people, including me, score joker points. We've had two DeathList hits that also score here, Joss Ackland and Rosalynn Carter. Well done to the pickers. Suzanne Somers was a unique hit for etib80, congratulations! I have to admit, neither of her big shows ring any bell with me. Then, as mentioned above, Joan Jara gives Cpt Hemlock another unique hit. The yahoo obit has since been followed by other QOs. She was an artist-y figure, acting/dancing, turned political activist/wife of chilean labor hero Victor Jara. This already seems to be it. Not much in almost a whole month. The scoreboard shows me attacking the top with just 4 pts behind. But is there still a unique pick for me left in the game, or is this minor difference going to remain? In other news, expect the new thread soon. gcreptile 10,964 Posted December 3, 2023 I'm short of time today, but recent events do call for an update. We've had few but massive hits. There was Henry Kissinger, the upscale warlord from Franconia. Just a few months ago I visited his birth house. The surrounding area, an alley full of flowers, might actually be the best part of that town. There was Shane MacGowan, for me the deadpooling wildcard personified. He struck late, but did in the end, with interesting consequences. We have Sandra Day O'Connor, first female Supreme Court justice. She occasionally swung both ways, but not when it mattered, and afterwards, she said that she regretted her Bush vs Gore decision. But some things cant be forgiven. Finally, Terry Venables was also a hit. My memories of the 1996 Euro are a bit hazy though. So I don't recall the name. All these hits were picked by quite a few players. Chris Stone, an Australian rugby player-turned-businessman-turned Belgian first husband, is a very prominent non-obit. He would have been the compensation for those who didn't pick Shane MacGowan. But as he didn't obit, the MacGowan fans are creeping up the scoreboard with RadGuy and An Fear Beag now within one hit of the top. Perhaps 1,423 Posted December 26, 2023 Richard Franklin is a hit here for Biblio and me. Criminally underused name in deadpooling for someone that's been known to be ill for a long time. He's been on my shadow list for 3 years. 2
MrWonderful 480 Posted December 28, 2023 Delors was a hit for me and probably for many others. Not a huge point-getter, but I'll take what I can get. I now have a better understanding of how this pool works!
gcreptile 10,964 Posted January 5 Let's wrap this up, shall we? We've had a couple of late year hits, and yes, they actually decided the game. Let's start with Norman Lear. The groundbreaking TV showrunner was a hit for 5 players. Ryan Minor was a hit for quite a few people, some of them making use of the 5 substitution slots for him. Maybe a minor hit, minor difference, etc.... but that's the one that counted, in the end. Richard Franklin, as noted above, was a hit for Perhaps and Bibliogryphon. One of the hundreds of British names that seem very quite significant, but not having grown up with the BBC, does put me at a disadvantage remembering these actors. Jacques Delors, Mr. Euro, was another popular hit and gives some late points across the board. Robert Solow, a significant economist, not just signficant in the science, but also popular with deadpoolers finally died at 99. Diego and Mr. Wonderful score. Ryan Minor was not the only hit named Ryan in this update, as Ryan O'Neal also died in the final month. He should have asked his doc what's up a little more often - though actually, his age of 82 is not particularly low, considering the drug use.. Cale Yarborough was the final hit of the game, a hit on the final day. He was quite the popular mid-year substitution and actually would have decided the game, if it wasn't for Ryan Minor. EDIT: As seen below, yes, there was also Beach Boys collaborator and guitarist Jeffrey Foskett. He had been ill and with gofundme for years. The patience for two players, msc and JoeyRuss finally paid off. Slightly curiously, Gaston Glock was not a hit. And as far as I can tell, none of the non-obits got a late QO, Daniel N Paul, Steve Woodmore, Chris Stone or Oommen Chandy among them. So, unless I have made mistakes (it's likely), the final scoreboard is below. Banana wins with a small advantage over me. He actually needed Ryan Minor, or I would have won on the final day with Cale Yarborough. But then, it's also a title defense, very rare in this competitive environment. Well done, and congratulations! Behind the top duo, we see An Fear Beag, RadGuy, and Funeralopolis, sort of in the "needed two more hits" territory. Interestingly, both Funeralopolis and Rad Guy had more hits than the players above them. Funeralopolis wins "Most hits" with 23, RadGuy has 22. Banana has 19, I have 18. DIfferent strategies at work! In my opinion, maybe the biggest surprise, the "best improved" player might be Buffalo Phil at 12th. Well done, as well! We all still chase the score records of DevonDeathTrip's win a couple of years ago. But maybe there's a parallel to the DDP, more hits overall, but fewer "high scores". 61 players was a record. It's doubtful that this record can be reached soon again. We've had a reduction in 2024 by 8 teams. The 50+X field seems the "natural" size, considering 2022 had 44 teams. DeathByNumbers 2023 was even bigger than the AltObits pool, if I count it right, especially if you count "picks total", because AltObits is only 40 names per team, here we are 50 (+ 5). Rank Team Score 1 Banana 1235 2 gcreptile 1196 3 An Fear Beag 1136 4 RadGuy 1127 5 Funeralopolis 1116 6 Salmon Mousse 1073 7 Cpt.
