I don't like every song out of the last 10 songs, but all in all it's just a proper 90s top 10.

my personal ranking vs. our result so far:

03. The Beautiful South – A little time (13)

05. The Prodigy – Firestarter (14)

07. Manic Street Preachers – If you tolerate this, your children will be next (12)

08. Madonna – Frozen (22)

10. Take That – Back for good (16)

11. Cornershop – Brimful of Asha (24)

13. The Shamen – Ebeneezer Goode (18)

14. Jamiroquai – Deeper Underground (25)

17. Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody/Those were the days my friend (21)

18. The Verve – The drugs don´t work (11)

19. Livin´ Joy – Dreamer (15)

20. Spice Girls – Wannabe (17)

23. B*Witched – C´est la vie (19)

24. Britney Spears - ... baby, one more time (20)

25. Whigfield – Saturday Night (23)

Was vaguely interested in the chronological spread of our top 10, so here they are in order, including how long they were no.1:

Madonna — Vogue - April-May ‘90 – 4 weeks

Adamski – Killer - May-June ‘90 – 4 weeks

Shakespeare’s Sister – Stay – February-April ‘92 – 8 weeks

Tasmin Archer – Sleeping Satellite - October ’92 – 2 weeks

Ace Of Base – All That She Wants - May-June ’93 – 3 weeks

Coolio ft. L.V. – Gangsta´s Paradise - October-November ’95 – 2 weeks

The Fugees – Killing Me Softly - June-July ’96 – 5 (4 + 1) weeks

White Town – Your Woman - January ’97 – 1 week

No Doubt – Don’t Speak - February-March ‘97 – 3 weeks

Fatboy Slim – Praise You - January ’99 – 1 week

Some observations of varying interest:

  • Vogue and Killer were no. 1 consecutively, so clearly we love the spring of 1990.
  • Killing Me Softly was the Grover Cleveland, its run interrupted by one week of Three Lions at no.1.
  • No songs from ’91, ’94 or ’98, two each from ’90, ’92 and ’97.
  • Time spent at no.1 trends down as the decade wore on, as we saw in the sheer number of shit hit singles we waded through in recent weeks.
  • Is it just me, or are these mostly slower, more mellow tracks? Nothing is especially poppy or high energy.

The Beautiful South (13th) was my 24th. I’m staggered it made the final.

The Manics (12th) was my 8th. In the face of much scorn, it made the top half. Happy with that.

The Verve (11th) was my 19th. Too sickeningly cheery to rank any higher than that.
Tasmin Archer (10th) was my 15th. Lovely song, bit of an underdog, glad it did so well.

Not a good 24 hours for my favourites :(

14/ Firestarter - my #1

13/ A Little Time - my #7

12/ If You Tolerate This... - my #3

11/ The Drugs Don't Work - my #8

10/ Sleeping Satellite - my #12

I guess the songs that polarise are more likely to be eliminated early, whilst those left at the end are the ones where everyone thinks "it's OK"

Bit of tactical there, just as guilty as anyone sometimes. Adamski is probably my favourite track here, but madge is fighting against a scots handicap.

Still at least Fugees is my least favourite, not a fan of covers can only name about 2 all time that were better than the original - and in this case, I didn't even like the original.

Seems rather a lot of fuss over the fact I don't like a track given that the whole game is about what people do and don't like.

@TQR I hope that was some kind of joke gone wrong, because the way it reads is rather personal and with no justification I can see.

Manics got my vote more frequently than I listen to because there's such a dearth of rock on that list. I suppose rock music is more album oriented; I see that only one Nirvana song entered the top 10. But y'all binned Blur and Oasis quickly too. Rock votes go to No Doubt now.

Oh I was only messing about, sorry if it seemed otherwise! I was defending a song I love by channeling Will Smith.
