I'd never heard of Toni di Bart until he started appearing on the TOTP repeats on BBC4. The song was very successful but the guy couldn't sing live to save himself.

I don't expect Simply Red to get much love here but someone who proved he definitely could sing live was Mick Hucknall.

Fairground is not peak Simply Red unfortunately but at least I know it

24 Livin’ Joy – Dreamer +4

Now that is on one of my playlists. First track in I don't know how long.

Edit: Actually thinking about it I'm kind of mystified how it got to #1, sure it's dance/trance floor filler, but not the kind of thing normally hits the top of 7" single charts.

All the teen mob must've been on holiday.

Proper banger! Lots of those didn’t make it to No.1 as it turns out. In fact I can genuinely feel the anger rising in me now I’m thinking about all the things that missed out on the top spot but fucking DOOP made it. Ugh.

As an aside, to anyone who hasn’t heard of Doop, don’t look it up. It will drive you to kill. Just vote it down.

msc and I previously spoke of our love for Doop when it appeared on TOTP. Hard to overstate how awful it is, especially when presented with a troupe of dancing flapper girls.

Ecstasy was very strong in the 90s sure (as covered in the previous round by The Shamen) but no amount of it will ever make Doop acceptable.

Whigfield is a guilty pleasure song and I make no apologies. I used to be part of a mobile disco set-up in the mid-90's and it was always my favourite to drop. I even knew the dance.

Speaking of Whigfield, it's generally accepted (although still officially unconfirmed) that the singer isn't Sannie Carlson, it's actually Annerley Gordon (who will appear as Ann Lee in a future 90's list)

For those interested in such matters - https://www.discogs.com/forum/thread/216381

When you hear her singing the first (and superior) version of Try Me Out - another 90's dance classic - it's really obvious:

Not only that, you've downvoted Blur. It might not be the best track in the world but as with Wannamaker and Oasis....

There's an absolute pile of dross here and you choose that?

I'm appalled by the taste hereabouts sometimes

And @ladyfiona hasn't even pitched up yet to ponder which Take That track to vote up :P

Edit: Spoke too soon :)

Wannamaker giving Oasis the finger, I can let that slide. Some of their stuff is pretty good but they are overrated, and Noel is a penis. Downvoting Blur, however…a pox on Imelda’s house.

Oh I agree, Noel is a grade A plank. And all the arguments about Oasis thinking they are the second coming, even if only of The Beatles, hold at least some water. But one is absolutely spoiled for choice on 'songs' that are worse here which is ultimately what we are supposedly voting for.

I've just realised why this list is such a blank for me and it is Chris Evans fault. It was around this time that he took over the Radio 1 breakfast show so I went straight from Radio 1 to Radio 4 in my car and I had just got married and my wife did not do Radio so the only ones I know are those that have had impacts elsewhere or have survived onto the modern Radio 2 playlist
