@Great Uncle Bulgaria, each of you has 48 hours from now to exchange your Joker for a card that may gave you additional points. If you need to discuss, either post on the thread or PM me for a chat, and I will try to help you if you need it.

Hi

Just back from 96 hours at the in-laws in the middle of nowhere with no wifi, I suspect my 48 hours has expired by now but if not happy to take any guidance /action you think advisable....

Special dispensation as it is you, you have a credible excuse and your position isn't likely to change.

Black Joker - black card.

Your only options are pairs. You already have 4 Clubs and 8 Spades allocated on your team, as also the A Spades.

Your only real option to gain points is to cash in your Joker for A Clubs, which would give you 5 points for the A and 10 Points for the pair of Aces.

Sound good? Let me know and I'll pop that up for you. Happy New Year!

Done!

Few days left for straggling QOs for those who died on or before 31 December 2024.

Chad Morgan and Sally Oppenheim-Barnes both died on New Year's Day, thus being misses for those that picked them.

Before our players start packing for their long trek home, it is worth checking whether I have missed anyone or whether an obit has popped up for those dying within the time frame. Just a few short days left to check off before I slam the doors shut on the game! :hatsoff:

Agnes Keleti also died too late for those who picked her!

Tick, tick, tick...

Brenton Wood is yet another 2025 faller from the teams! Too late again to qualify.

There have been quite a few obits for names that still fell in 2024, none of which affect the game. As players await their departing taxis, the clock continues its inevitable countdown to close this game.

We are almost there, padawans!

The witching hour has passed and the Moonlight Shadow casts over the Old Field!

Before I begin shuttering the Casino and as players trudge through snowy lanes, icy roads and take their cabs and vehicles away, there does remain the matter of finalising the game. As the barman tallies the takings and Nibbles and George go to their respective animal carers, it is time therefore to reveal the final placings as follows:

1.    ladyFiona: 1241 Points
2.    diego: 1142 Points
3.    Captain Chorizo: 934 Points
4.    gcreptile: 855 Points
5.    Perhaps: 839 Points
6.    Grimgrass: 691 Points
7.    TQR: 689 Points
8.    wannamaker: 686 Points
9.    Toast: 684 Points
10.    Captain Hemlock: 672 Points
11.    Bibliogryphon: 645 Points
12.    MariNisia: 618 Points
13.    JoeMoneypenny: 606 Points
14.    Torva Messor: 591 Points
15.    Buffalo Phil: 580 Points
16.    Wormfarmer: 572 Points
17.    Great Uncle Bulgaria: 518 Points
18.    theoldlady: 460 Points
19.    Yorkshire Banker: 456 Points
20.    The Killing Time: 452 Points
21.    YoungWillz: 357 Points
22.    msc: 356 Points
23.    The Old Crem: 348 Points
24.    Death Impends: 306 Points
25.    Gooseberry Crumble: 244 Points
= 26. livingbygrace: 242 Points
= 26. RetroGamer47: 242 Points

And so I declare that the winner of this year's Poker Tournament is @ladyfiona. Another newbie to the game takes this year's crown, and can depart the Players' Room on the shoulders of those joyous 26 runners-up. A victory probably in no little part secured by picking the old and ill, maybe she can become a special advisor to the Committee for the Deathlist.

The win is overall tinged with a little regret I am sure, the winning score being the second lowest in Tournament history, ranking just above Death Impends' second win in 2018. Initially, I had thought MariNisia was going to romp away in the early days (with an early Joker as well), but their team stalled somewhat. And once our champion had taken the lead, there was no catching her. As usual, I must commend another newbie @diego for second place and former champ @CaptainChorizo for a fine and clear third place. At the other end of the table, it wasn't great news for Gooseberry Crumble, new player livingbygrace, and RetroGamer47 but still everybody did get a hit of their own and not rely solely on points from the Roulette Table. Incidentally, this remains one of the few (if not the only) game which gcreptile has not won, despite some stellar performances with the cards this year and in years past.

So we turn to the Hall of Fame, Champions All:

2017 - Death Impends

2018 - Death Impends

2019 - Captain Chorizo

2020 - Perhaps

2021 - Captain Chorizo

2024 - ladyfiona

And so we turn to the Hall of Shame prize, which is still a trophy nonetheless and is not a badge of failure, merely an encouragement to do better. Now a few days ago, I was considering whether or not to issue this at all. Everyone seemed to be on a par with no clear participant having a nightmare. That has changed. On balance, I award this to regular player @JoeMoneypenny. Not only were they the only player who could have exchanged a Joker and did not do so, two of their team names decided in their wisdom to depart a single day after the time limit. Combined with a non-obiting name during the game, their fate was sealed. However, as this was an unlucky combination of events, their portrait will go next to that of gcreptile above the Players' Room as a reminder that luck, chance and the turn of a card is always the fun of the game!

Hall of Shame

2017 - Joey Russ

2018 - Joey Russ

2019 - Sir Creep

2020 - Guy From Future & msc

2021 - gcreptile

2024 - JoeMoneypenny

Once again, I'd like to extend my thanks to all players past and present for indulging in this game, and hope you've enjoyed it.

If the Casino opens again, I hope that I can again return  to the manager's chair and welcome you all back (and maybe some others) for another game.

HAND. Yes, that's a big hand to all of you.

We are done. Lights out, doors closed.

Always assume victory is assured - until it isn't!

I know everyone really loves this game once they have had a taste of it, and there will (more than likely) be more chances to win or get a respectable score. The game has a winner and everyone else is a runner-up!

It is simply a player's skill and the luck of the cards which can mean everything, and no game is the same. It's a bit of fun, and I hope you have enjoyed getting into how the game works.

Congratulations @ladyfiona, I'm happy with the 2nd place podium
Thank you @YoungWillz for organizing this game, I really hope it comes back in the middle of the year, I know it's hard work, but I loved participating in it and I want to participate again
A curiosity, if my choice of Cardinal Alexandre do Nascimento had gotten a QO, is there a way to simulate what my final score would be?
I was a little surprised that he didn't get it, I thought that cardinals would have a guaranteed QO, even though they are from Angola, but it serves as a learning experience

Not really, he was a substitute for you - so that would involve drawing a single card for anything between 2 and 14 points. Not enough to make a difference of any consequence.

Glad you enjoyed playing!

Thanks everyone. Honestly it was pure luck as no major names I picked stood out other than Jimmy Carter. Bit of a mediocre year in people dying I think.

I messaged you in private @YoungWillz but I hope this pool returns as I enjoyed it.

Congrats @ladyfiona

I'm clearly about as good at this as I am at actual poker

Thanks for running it @YoungWillz, I hope this pool returns, it's a fun twist on deadpooling.
