I get that, but it's not really any different from someone with dual nationality picking a side so I don't see why UK would be a problem.

I mean in full it's 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland', so it's all there anyway.

Well, technically, from an Olympic standpoint, we're just Great Britain actually. The Irish Olympic Committee represents the island of Ireland, not the Republic of Ireland apparently. :D

Anyway, you can't change it because I like Team GB. :lol: Team UK sounds like something Boris would have come up with.  :facepalm:

Beth Shriever was impressive, but everyone else knew her tactics and so must have had a secret chat before the final and be like "if we bunch her up she won't win".

Agreed. Same thing happened to Joe Clarke in the Kayak Cross. The opponents saw their opportunities to box them off and took them.

You did hear correct, although they perhaps have a different sort of advantage as apparently their mother's swam together previously! So their partnership also started in the womb. ;)

Not only are there 2 Nielsen sisters who both run (Laviai is slightly better than Lina), both sisters suffer from multiple sclerosis which leaves them fatigued and sometimes unable to run. Quite astonishing really.

I like the relays, it means you may not have the quickest runner on the planet, but you can put together 4 good runners who are better than the sum of their parts. Exhibit A is the USA, who regularly have 3 men in the 100m final but haven't won the Men's 4x100m title since Sydney 2000 because they can't get the baton round - team of individuals, who don't care about each other. UK used to be rubbish at relays but the last decade they've really upped their games and we medalled in all 5 relays in this Olympics (Men's and Women's 4x100m and 4x400m and the Mixed 4x400m).

Minor point re the women's 4x400, we had eight athletes on the podium, i.e., the whole semi final team were dropped for the final race. One of those in the semi was Jodie Williams who finally got her Olympic medal after 12 years of trying. Long story but...in another life she'd have been our Usain Bolt, so good was she as a junior. Pushing herself during injuries led to a spectacular calamity, ripping a hamstring in the UK championships ahead of the London games as she tried to qualify. Been a tough career since then with highs and lows, but - fuck knows - she deserves that medal.

I hadn't considered that. I'm familiar with Jodie's story, you're right, a real fighter and a well deserved medal and moment on the podium.

I know jack shit about basketball but there is no way the USA Women deserved to beat France there. Missed out on overtime by a couple of centimetres which meant it was a 2-point score rather than a 3-point score. USA haven't lost a match since Barcelona 1992, it's their 8th straight gold medal in women's basketball. They just beat France 68-67 in the gold medal match.

You're still on my personal pre-moderate list. But this must be the third of fourth straight post with a link. Others may disagree, but if you're not being banned this is at least a massive leap forward that should be recognized, so I am.

This isn't the Team GB Performance Review, I'm on a forum about picking which celebrities are likely to die soon, commenting on the Olympic Games as a Team GB fan, I'm sorry if my discussion wasn't intellectual enough or rigorous enough for you.

14 gold medals is lower than 29, 27, 22 and 19. It is more than 9.

65 medals is less than 67. It is the same as 65. It is more than 64, 51 and 32.

Both of those statistics are true. Neither of them state whether or not it has been a good Olympic Games for Team GB or in general. I would say I am disappointed in our performances in some events and delighted by our performances in others. So pretty much like every other games. There is a lot of promise for 2028, it is the end of an era for some. I'd be interested to know how many gold medals we've truly underperformed by - how many nailed on golds have we failed to obtain? I look forward to hearing some examples. I would say this is hopefully going to be our new norm: 50-60 medals, 10-20 golds depending on the games. That's a far higher baseline that we had prior to 2008. And it will do me just fine.

Uk Sport set three targets. One was 50-70 medals which was reached very easily with 65. One was a third of medals being gold. A third of 65 is 21.66 so 14 golds is a fair way down on that. Another was top 5 in the medal table and they missed that by 3 golds which is disappointing. Being beaten in the medal table by having less golds but more medals than four countries is also disappointing. On a USA medal table we third! The Netherlands have allmost half the less medals than us but more golds which is disappointing.

France will also be disappointed with only 16 golds for 64 medals compared to the 29 golds for 65 we got in London. And being beaten by Japan and Austrlaia.

A man was arrested for climbing the Eiffel Tower on Sunday, hours before the Olympics closing ceremony, Paris police told the BBC.

The man was spotted climbing the tower at about 14:45 local time (13:45 BST) and officers immediately intervened and arrested him, police said. No more details were immediately available on the man’s motivation and nationality.

Videos on social media, external show a shirtless man scaling the tower just above the Olympic rings that have adorned it during the summer games.

In another video, the man is escorted away, external by police, hands cuffed behind his back, and says to a bystander: "Bloody warm, innit?"

:lol:

@The Old Crem I won't quote you just in case TQR pops back and there's no need to if I'm responding to your points.

1. Target hit.

2. Target missed. If we'd only won 50 medals, we'd have only needed 17 golds for a third, so it's awful that we overachieved. I've already outlined how close we were to a bucketful more golds which would have more than hit the target. There are plenty more nearlys they'll be able to point to, too.

3. Target missed. We don't control the medal table. or what other countries do. If we'd hit our gold target, we'd have hit our medal table target. As it was, we were 2 golds away, hardly disastrous. We could have won 17 gold medals and nothing else, been 5th on the medal table and hit 2 of the 3 targets but I'm not sure it would be a better games for missing out on the top one.

If UK Sport consider 29 bronze medals a failure, then our standards are too high. If they consider there to be room for improvement, they'd be right.

What’s a hot takey - links? I presume anything political and cultural war etc. I think from now on I will stick to just posting deaths and health updates in the main section.

I’m sorry if a post about Glasgow hosting the commonwealth games somehow was offensive or winding someone up. I didn’t expect it cause an issue.  I was just posting news that is relevant to the Olympics and also to the Scottish posters on here.,

This is an interesting comparison of medals per capita :

image.thumb.png.e9a8e6c96afcd28176627521a66a5723.png

Discounting Dominica and Saint Lucia because they each had just one outstanding performer, it shows what an impressive Olympics New Zealand had, although they're traditionally a very strong sporting nation. Not far off double any other country. Ireland had their best ever Olympics, they've moved from 63rd in the medal table in Rio to 19th in Paris.

For comparison, Team GB had 2.06 gold, 3.24 silver and 3.97 bronzes (total 9.26) per 10 million people. USA had figures of 1.11, 1.23 and 1.23 (3.57) whilst China had 0.27, 0.19 and 0.17 (0.63). Lowest totals overall were Pakistan and India on 0.04 total each.

All figures from here ==>https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/athletics/2024/08/11/irelands-olympics-performance-in-graphs-steady-progress-up-medal-table-and-better-per-capita/

Now that Paris 2024 nears its close, The Netherlands did a great job at the Olympics! Sixth in the end rankings which is our best result in history, even ahead of GB + North Ireland. Fifteen gold medals, breaking the record of Sydney 2000 (twelve); and 34 medals in total, only three below the record-number 37 in Tokyo 2021. It will be quite the challenge to beat this result in coming Games.

Some outstanding moments/Olympians during the Games:

- ofcourse the 4×400 mixed relay: with Femke Bol turning a fourth place into a gold medal in less than a round;

- Bol winning a bronze and silver medal each later during the games - there are a lot of great Dutch athletes at the moment but she's just outstanding;

- Both women's and men's hockey team winning gold, the first nation to do so in the history of the Olympics;

- cyclist Harrie Lavreysen winning gold medals at the sprint, the team sprint and the keirin - added to his previous two medals in Tokyo, he has become the most succesful Dutch Olympian ever at the Summer Olympics;

- the 3×3 basketball team, winning the finals against France in the last seconds;

- Sifan Hassan winning gold at the marathon this morning, having won bronze medals at the 5000 and 10.000 meters as well.

And to think The Netherlands had no medals after five days!

Definitely, as you can see above the Netherlands had the seventh best medals per capita record of any nation. Really impressive Games for the Dutch, congratulations! Hassan was the most impressive of those for me, to do that less than 48 hours after medalling in the 10k was unbelievable.
