Are You Being Served?

Recommended Posts

Mollie Sugden - Mrs. Slocombe - b.1922

John Inman - Mr. Humphries - b.1935 (but was ill not that long ago)

Trevor Bannister - 1st Mr. Lucas - b.1936

Frank Thornton - Capt. Peacock - b.1921

Wendy Richards MBE - Miss Brahms - b.1943

Nicholas Smith - Mr. Rumbold b.1934

Mr. Grainger, Young Mr. Grace and the Maintenance Guy died 1978, 1981 and 1995 respectively.

So any possible candidates for deathlist in the near future.

That's all but 2 gone now.Only Nicholas Smith and Frank Thornton survive :o

Trevor Bannister is also a loss to the cast of Last of the Summer Wine.I'm sure I saw a thread for that show somewhere but I'm damned if I can find it!

... well, you could add latecomer Mike Berry (b. 1942) to that list. He played Mr Spooner, who was basically an ersatz Mr Lucas if I recall. Then there are the 2 minor characters Mr. Grace's Nurse, played by Vivienne Johnson, who appeared in 22 episodes but only got the occasional bit of dialogue, usually when YMG was having palpitations. IMDB doesn't give a date of birth and suggests no one knows what became of the actress*; and former page 3 girl Penny Irving (b. 1955) who played secretary Miss Bakewell (no first name, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Cherry).

God, how I abhor that series now, but have to admit I did watch it at the time!

* According to Wikipedia: "currently employed as a cover drama teacher in Essex schools, most recently Moulsham High School, in Chelmsford, Essex. She has married, and is known as Mrs. Vivienne Higgs."

Didn't one of Mr. Grace's nurses die of a heroin overdose?

Because none of his co-stars will be able to say what a wonderful chap he was when he does die.

He didn't.He was on it in 2010 and 2011, just not this year :(

PS in answer to Phantom Nicholas Smithmaybe should be worried because 5 of the other 6 on the list have died in t he last 6 years with no more than 2 years between deaths,so if the law of averages works out he has a maximum of 2 years to live.I realise that things arent that simple and he'll probably live another decade ,but I was just trying to be clever

Oh I thought you were implying that someone was quietly killing them off.

"He had been the last surviving member of the original cast."

So we can close this thread then....

You'll hear a lot of comments like that from me over the next week or so. Just yesterday I was reading the news and saw that Charles Williams had died, so crossed him off my shortlist, and now Nicholas Smith.

Out of the main cast that is. Candy Davis who played Miss Belfridge, Mr. Rumbold's secretary is still alive.

Actually ignore that, just realised that she's 53 now. so if she was a member of the original cast, she's only have been 11 years old.

2007- John Inman dies

2009- Wendy Richards and Molly Sugden die

2011-Trevor Bannister dies

2013-Frank Thornton dies

2015-Nicholas Smith dies

if i was Mike Berry i wouldn't do anything too strenuous till 2017 was out of the way just to be on the safe side !

Mr. Rumbold's original secretary was played by Stephanie Gathercole, who also provides the theme's vocal. She's still alive. The only other surviving (credited) cast member from the pilot is Michael Knowles, better known for It Ain't Half Hot Mum, now in his late 70s.

Growing up I was completely fascinated and entertained by this show. A true ensemble piece. RIP Nicholas and thank you for your work.

Wasn't it Young Mr Grace who had a secretary, and if memory serves, a nurse as well?
