Ireland was, at a point a British colony - we occupied it (and for the record, Scotland before being in the Union declared it as Ulster in 1620). Given settlements, occupations, conflict on the island, that's why there's so much turmoil in Northern Irish politics. Totally different situation here in Scotland - we were never a colony, never occupied during the duration of the Union. We signed the dotted line, and until recent years, the idea of separating from the rest of Great Britain, and indeed the United Kingdom, would've been laughable. I had very little time for the man but I'm sure he understood this vital difference all too well which is why when he was questioned on the matter last year, he didn't give an endorsement to either side, and simply stated that it was the democratic decision of Scots to decide their own future.
