Sir Creep 7,013 Posted December 29, 2022 Al Smith, a former pro basketball player who spent five seasons in the American Basketball Association (ABA), died last Monday in Florida. He was 75 years old. It was reported that Smith shot his live-in girlfriend. Law enforcement arrived, and negotiators attempted to talk to Smith for several hours but could not make contact. Sarasota County (FL) officials forced entry and discovered Smith died by suicide due to a self-inflicted gunshot. Smith's girlfriend was transported to a hospital for treatment. Smith was selected in the 11th round of the NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls in 1971. Ford also has the distinction of having made the first ever NBA 3-pointer. Spade_Cooley 9,022 Posted February 7, 2023 So for those of us who plumped for collegiate basketball coaching legend Denny Crum in this year's DDP, we probably saw message board talk that he'd been moved to hospice in early December. This news story from a few days ago, however, says that he's "fighting health issues at home" that mean he's unable to leave his house. How are we interpreting that? I'm guessing that the hospice wasn't fully palliative, and it was just so they could sort his home out so it's comfortable for him to slowly die there over the next few months. Sir Creep 7,013 Posted March 20, 2023 Willie Cager, a member of the 1965-66 Texas Western national championship winning team, died at the age of 81. Cager’s death came on the exact date Texas Western defeated Kentucky, 72-65, in the 1966 NCAA men’s college basketball championship game 57 years ago. Cager was part of the 1966 Texas Western squad that made history. Hall of Fame coach Don Haskins put out an all-black starting five in the NCAA Championship game against Kentucky.
