I think the reason it's called the championship is because of the breakaway the winner of the championship is champion of the entire football league in that year (which extends down to League Two, incorporating 72 teams.)

So, the premiership isn't in the football league? It's some sort of separate entity? Which you get into by winning the league below*, which is in fact the top of the entire football league.... ok.

*though it isn't 'below' is it? It can't be since it's the top of the entire football league, it must be a sort of sideways move. 1,2,3,4 never seemed so appealing simple before now :P.

But you're still thinking about it in general sporting terms. The Premiership as well as the Championship and Leagues One and Two form the "English professional football league pyramid", as in a "league of football". The Premier League is managed separately from the Football League, which comprises the other three leagues. That's how the Football League season finished this weekend, yet the Premier League season still has a week to run. Every level of English football is then under the purview of the Football Association, but beyond that the leagues organise themselves, with TV deals, merchandise, fixture lists, ticketing, financial fair play rules, etc. In the pre-Premier League days the Football League was in charge of all the top four divisions, inspiringly named Divisions 1, 2, 3 and 4. Then the top clubs broke away and formed their own league and called it the Premier League. There are those who would prefer the Premiership be more like an American sports league, where teams never change and there is no promotion or relegation, but the vast majority realise this would never be accepted so promotion and relegation to and from the Football League occurs every season.

We haven't even touched on the fact that what I grew up with as the "GM Vauxhall Conference" spent about 4 seasons as the "Blue Square Premier Division", meaning you could be relegated from the Premier League and 4 seasons later be in the Premier Division. At least National League makes a little more sense.

The Premier League (not premiership) is managed and run separately from the Football League. The football league is best described as the feeder system for the Premiership, with the Conference system best described as a feeder system for the Football League, there's then a gazillion different regional systems that feed into .

They're all at various Levels on the UK Football League System (known as the football pyramid) and they are all below and above another league which they accept teams from excepting the Premier League, however finishing in the top four qualifies you for Champions League (a knock-out tournament in European Football) so high finishes other than winning are still as important.

And when you get down to the sixth tier you have a situation where the country - well England and as much of Wales as gives a shit, basically - is divided into two which are labelled North and South. Across the middle of this somewhat random divide are counties that could contribute teams to either a northern or southern league and the placing of the various teams in the sixth tier league is decided entirely by forcing the 22 with the northernmost grounds into the North and the others into the South. So sometimes a team is sitting in one league only to be told to move because too many teams are promoted/relegated into the other one. A few years ago I saw Workington play away at Bishops Stortford (i.e. the end of the runway at Stanstedt) in a game in Conference NORTH!!

The Premier League (not premiership) is managed and run separately from the Football League.

So, it's all done in the name of corporate profits and has precious little to do with sport.

I am not so naive that I wasn't aware of this, I have a vague recollection of this all emanating somewhere in the days of the birth of Sky Sports, thus Murdoch probably has a hand in it.

Also the top players feeling the money due to them was being distributed too far down the system, "The punters pay to see us on tv not Fort 'can't find the ball never mind kick it' William from somewhere in the arctic circle" (sorry mary).

Heh, tell that to the baseball fans of Montreal and the gridiron supporters in St Louis (amongst others).

Seems only fitting that West Hams last match at Upton Park would be delayed due a hooliganism incident. Kick off now at 20:30 rather than 19:45.

Aye, looked fairly lively on the news tonight; getting a bit of deja vu for the bad old days just watching it.

Match went off without a hitch. Apart from the fucker who went towards (maybe on?) the pitch. Reckon there's going to be quiet a few people not sleeping in the area though.

World Cup 2026 host announcement delayed by three years to 2020. Hopefully boosts chance of it coming to England.

So, Big Sam avoids relegation, again!!

Who's gonna pay top dollar for him to save their Premiershit skin next season, then? Or does he stay at the Stadium of Light?

You mean it gives them more time to get the bribe money together.

The new goal line technology would have proved it crossed the line.

Burton Albion next season for us then. Relegated by Sunderland due to a poor performance at Aston Villa to boot.

Not to mention the fourth one, "scored" in the middle of a pitch invasion...

Apparently the original plan was to attack a supporters' coach, not the team bus - but then they realised that all the Man U supporters live locally and would be coming by Tube.

Europa and Champions League finals to be streamed on YouTube and BT Showcase. In other words, free for pretty much anybody watch. Haha to the suckers who payed £21.99 to watch them.

Basically UEFAs a little bit pissed of at how low the viewing figures have got since ITV had the rights nicked off them.

Hibs manage to "Hibs it" and lose to Falkirk in the playoffs. I can see Falkirk getting promoted and Killie relegated. Not what we wanted

And with Dundee United down as well they'll be struggling next season too.

Anyone reckon a 500,000 capacity football stadium could be built in the UK?

International football matches. I reckon if it was located in the midlands and tickets were cheap enough (say a tenner, with coaches costing £20-35) it could sell out for most home internationals played on a Saturday/Sunday. It would also be a massive boon for our World Cup bids. It's obviously far too big for a league team but it would be far better than Wembley for international purposes. If constructed properly, the view wouldn't be a massive issue. You could also play CL matches there and attract much larger audiences. And finally, some of the biggest stadium concerts in the world. Make the place safe standing and it wouldn't even be horrendously massive.

Even with safe standing, you'd have a site at least 2/3 times the size of the Nou Camp. There would be safety issues with half a million people and X amount of exits, also the height needed so each seat could have sight of the pitch. Also, I really doubt there's the demand. England can't even sell out Wembley with Brazil yet, let alone over 5 times the number of seats.
