Haughey has developed pneumonia

CHARLES Haughey is suffering from pneumonia and last week also had a blood clot removed from his lung, the Sunday Independent can reveal.

Mr Haughey was admitted to the Mater Private Hospital on Monday after his breathing became increasingly difficult over the weekend.

A blood clot which had developed on his lung was subsequently removed and his condition in hospital has since stabilised, according to sources close to the family.

However, his medical condition has been further complicated after he subsequently developed pneumonia.

The former Taoiseach is suffering from prostate cancer and a number of other complicating medical factors, including secondary tumours and a heart condition.

 

A close friend of the Haughey family said that Mr Haughey is grievously ill, but there is a chance that he may come through the medical setback as he has done in the past.

"He is as ill as he was three months ago, but he rallied then and he could rally now," said the friend.

One of the medical team treating the disgraced politician said Mr Haughey displayed all the signs of having been blessed with a very strong constitution and this could stand to him.

 

A blood clot on the lung, termed a pulmonary embolism, comes about when the blood is not at the level of consistency that it should be and can usually be treated with medication.

The condition comes about when there is an imbalance in the clotting factors in the blood and can be made worse with a lack of mobility. Early diagnosis of a blood clot usually leads to successful treatment.

However, the onset of pneumonia is another serious development in the health condition of the former Taoiseach.

While usually treatable with antibiotics, the condition is much more serious in someone of declining health.

 

Haughey was admitted to the Mater Private Hospital last Monday having developed breathing difficulties over the weekend.

His family decided not to accompany him to hospital in order to avoid a media siege.

Despite the regression in his health, Haughey was said to be in good spirits during his time in hospital and was dealing with personal correspondence.

Colleagues visiting him last weekend at his home in Kinsealy said he was ill but in good form.

Concerns about his medical condition were raised last September but he subsequently recovered and spent Christmas with his family in Kinsealy.

 

The health of the former leader of Fianna Fail has been a matter of constant debate since 2000 when lawyers for Haughey told the Moriarty tribunal that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and the continued stress of attending the tribunal would affect his health.

Subsequently, arrangements were put in place for Charlie Haughey to enable him deliver his evidence to the tribunal in private.

The Banshee is infact a beautiful irish witch. And to be perfectly honest, I don't think she really ever liked Charles Haughley the former irish PM. I think she may give Mr.Haughley a holler.

Thanks for the news Captain Oates. It sounds very promising. Casper Weinberger only lasted a week after being admitted into hospital with pneumonia. Haughey seems to be in much worse shape than Weinberger was, so it should not be too long before his demise.

I agree with the first 3, they're never going to die either. Haughey, though, is Irish and their constitutions have traditionally not been the strongest. He'll go eventually.

Haughley was released from the hospital recently - He may not go just yet.

According to this article, Charles Haughey was released from the hospital a few days ago after being successfully treated for pneumonia. He also has prostate cancer, which is bound to catch up with him sometime. Hopefully it will be this year for the sake of my ddp and hdp.

THE family of ailing Charles Haughey have resigned themselves to his imminent death, which they are aware is "only a matter of time".

 

But yesterday, those close to the former Taoiseach insisted that, despite his grave ill-health, Mr Haughey is determinedly fighting to live the last days of his life as normal - and is even continuing to work when he can.

 

He is currently resting at his beloved home at Abbeville in Kinsealy, Co Dublin. There is no dramatic deathbed situation, say insiders.

 

"He is very frail, but he is still very much in control," said a source. "Even over the past few days he was up and about and working in his office. He is continuing to go about his business - he never stopped before, and he is not going to do so now, even when facing death.

 

"That is not Charlie Haughey's way. He's fighting hard."

 

But there is no doubt that the end is close for Mr Haughey, whose health is worsening daily. He is believed to be finding it increasingly difficult to breathe.

 

The 80-year-old former Taoiseach is suffering from prostate cancer and other medical complications, including secondary tumours and a heart condition. He is said to have lost a considerable amount of weight inrecent months.

 

One friend said: "He is on the downward slide. It is only a matter of time and the family know that - they know the end is coming. They are waiting for the end."

 

Last weekend, Mr Haughey was admitted to the Mater Hospital, Dublin, for a number of days to undergo a scheduled treatment.

 

Friends said yesterday that the visit was not an emergency and that the appointment was "routine" and had been prearranged. He was released on Tuesday after undergoing a series of tests. It was recently rumoured that Mr Haughey was intending to attend the exclusive Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre in New York.

 

The ex-Taoiseach had attended the centre back in 2000 and was so happy with the care and service there that he wanted to return again for further treatment.

 

But family friends said he would be too sick to even consider the seven-hour transatlantic trip and said there was nothing that doctors at the €20,000-a-day Sloane-Kettering clinic could do to help him at this stage.

 

Meanwhile, members of the Haughey family gathered at Abbeville to be close totheir father over this holiday weekend. In previous years, Mr Haughey traditionally enjoyed taking advantage of the bank holiday to take time off and go sailing.

 

Yesterday, there was an atmosphere of calm at the home, despite a large number of visitors, with seven cars parked along the driveway leading to the imposing Gandon mansion.

 

Last night sources close to Taoiseach Bertie Ahern told how he was keeping in touch indirectly with the Haughey family.

 

The tightly-knit Haughey family - mother Maureen, sons, Sean, Conor and Ciaran and daughter Eimear Mulhern - have decided not to comment on their father's health.

 

However, the family have been comforted by caring words from friends and colleagues in the constituency of the former leader.

 

Fianna Fail Dublin North Central councillor Sean Paul Mahon said there is a huge level of concern for Mr Haughey amongst the public, especially in his old area of Artane.

 

"It's the one thing I am always asked about on the doorsteps. Every day of the week, people ask me: 'How is Charlie?' They really want to know and they really care.

 

"The last time I was talking to Sean I was told he was in good spirits, and that was last weekend. It's clear there is a huge interest in the former Taoiseach's health and that is understandable. But it is also understandable why the family just don't want to discuss it," Mr Mahon said.

 

Sean Haughey and Sean Paul Mahon received more messages of support as they went on leaflet drops in the Westpark area of Artaneyesterday.

 

Mr Haughey was first diagnosed with prostate cancer 10 years ago. By October 2000, plans for him to take the witness stand at the Moriarty tribunal in Dublin Castle were cancelled due to his ill health and arrangements were made for him to deliver his evidence in private.

 

A year later, he came close to death when his heart stopped twice as he was being rushed to Beaumont Hospital. He has been seriously ill for the past year - in August 2005, the cancer spread to Mr Haughey's liver.

 

In March, he travelled abroad for private treatment at a specialist clinic. Weeks later he was admitted to the Mater Private Clinic suffering from pneumonia and a lung clot. While a patient at the hospital, Mr Haughey contracted the winter vomiting virus. He was back in the Mater last week for routine tests and is now home at Abbeville.

Ah, I'd seen this article on my Google Alerts, but couldn't access it. Having read the whole thing, it looks even more promising than before.

 

As for the death or the death dearth, I'd knock on wood and say that it's already begun with the death of JKG. Despite not having him on the DL, he was certainly a big name.

Yes, thanks for the update. Looks bleek. If he has had the cancer in his liver since Aug 05 then he has done very well to get this far. That's just the wrong place to get it. Typical 5 weeks to live type of area.

5 weeks, I knew a girl only lasted 5 days when they found it, never mind 8 months! If he has lasted that long then its only a matter of time and not that long I'd say!

The truth no doubt lies between the two articles. I'm a bit ignorant on Irish politics, but it seems like the two articles are just exaggerations in the opposite directions.

 

I'd say at the moment, no cause for hope or despair.
