From Cleric To Relic

Very Rev. Hugh Wyllie, the former moderator of the general assembly of Scotland has died at age 89:

https://www.churchofscotland.org.uk/news-and-events/news/2023/articles/tribute-to-former-moderator-of-the-general-assembly-who-has-died

I thought I recognized the name, and yes, he is, of course, a DDP pick.

Edit: Early QO before The Times gives something: https://uk.news.yahoo.com/news/tributes-paid-sudden-death-reverend-103320482.html

Megachurch pastor and gospel artist Carlton Pearson possibly dead, or at least in "comfort care", after a cancer battle at age 70 (some sources say he died):

Abbas "seriously ill in 2016" Mahfouzi has made some statements recently again recently since that one other ancient ayatollah died. Miracle that he's still alive, with Makarem Shirazi, Rahmati Sirjani, Shubairi Zanjani, al-Fayadh...

Grand Ayatollah Abbas "seriously ill in 2016" Mahfouzi's wife has died. Condolence messages sent by Ayatollahs Makarem Shirazi, Shubairi Zanjani, Khamenei etc, Mahfouzi looked fine at the funeral.

96-year-old Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati's second wife also died this week.

Going through the ayatollahs and other religious leaders.

Daisaku Ikeda, 95 a few days ago, hasn't been seen in over 3 years, he's rumored to either already dead or on his deathbed with his legs amputated a few years ago suffering from severe dementia or something similar. However, nobody seems to know the truth about his condition.

Daisaku Ikeda dead at 95.

Also Chanmyay Sayadaw looked half dead in July, wheelchair bound and enormously bloated legs. Wonder how he is still alive.

Finally!

I wasn't aware Chanmyay Sayadaw was still making appearances (I've considered him one of those who could die off-radar, I don't really know much about the guy). From the elderly Buddhist leaders I've listed Bangladeshi "highest guru" Gyanashree Mahathero (98) has been on and off IV meds with god knows what since May or June, bedbound and treated at home and Bhaddanta Āciṇṇa (89) recently had a heart surgery and has overall been in bad health for many years. Surai Sasai (88) was "very critical on ventilator" in 2014 and already back then suffering from some "prolonged illness". Well, he's still alive and that illness must be extremely prolonged by now as while he walks around and is still quite active he looks more and more like a mummified corpse each year.

Here's Sayadaw in July:

He is mentioned quite often on Facebook pages and has been wheelchair bound for a while.

Michael Curry, chief Episcopalian of the USA, suffers from repeated brain bleeds:

https://livingchurch.org/2023/12/04/presiding-bishop-hospitalized-again-with-brain-bleed/

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Curry_(bishop)

He had a non-cancerous mass in his brain removed together with an adrenal gland.

Edit: I should point out that he officiated the wedding of Harry and Meghan, so 100% slam-dunk oibt.

Khorasani (sadly) alive and well. Also appeared in public a week ago.

Khorasani...'s wife is dead. Of course it's not Khorasani, he and all the other very old ayatollahs seem to be doing fine. The frailest are probably Mousa Shubairi Zanjani (who looks like a supercentenarian Willie Nelson, heart and kidney problems, in ICU last year), Mohammad Rahmati Sirjani (never fully recovered from when he was in coma in 2021)

Abdul Mahdi al-Karbalai, major cleric and Ali Al-Sistani's official representative is ill with something. He's seemingly been bedbound for a month now.

Also for those interested here's an article on that Mormon Jeffrey Holland's recent health issues. He was in critical conditions during his kidney failure hospitalisation and wasn't expected to recover.

Apparent assasination attempt on major Afghan cleric/warlord/politician/drug trafficker/former Prime Minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar earlier this month. There are rumors he isn't on good terms with the Taliban currently. Hekmatyar seems to have more enemies than friends, he might end up like his predecessor Abdul Sabur Farid Kohistani or his successor Arsala Rahmani Daulat.

Not sure if bishops are worth mentioning but at first I thought these guys are all cardinals..

Apart from the catholic church itself dying pretty quickly in The Netherlands (3.7 million people registred as catholics, but only about 100k church visitors each sunday and less than 7.000 kids baptised each year, all declining about 10% a year) i saw a picture of the dutch bishops visiting the pope last week.

1280x720a.jpg

The bisshop in the wheelchair is Harrie Smeets, who has been suffering from brain cancer since last year and won't recover. Bisshop Jan Liesen  was unable to attend because he was himself being treated for cancer. The other bishops did send him a postcard (not a joke)

Smeets died today. He lasted longer than I expected..

So... Henry Moore (99 later this year) is now the last surviving British Anglican bishop who served in WWII. He lives in Lancashire according to the register.

There is one other senior Anglican clergyman who served – not a bishop but an archdeacon – Colin Stannard (wiki), who is 98 and lives in Surrey.

Luscombe is QO territory (but sadly unpicked in the DDP). Moore and Stannard aren't.

Henry Moore (wiki) turned 100 in November as per this Facebook post.

AFAIK, only the second Church of England bishop to become a centenarian, after John Cavell (wiki, 1916–2017). If Moore lives for just another few months he'll become the oldest ever.

Too bad he didn't fall during the sermon.  That was so incredibly uncomfortable to watch.  (I kid, I kid, about the falling stuff.  Not about how terrible his sermon was.)

Thanks to Cavell's wiki I've just learned that there is the post of Bishop to HM Prisons.

Tep Vong, Cambodia's most powerful religious leader, recently hospitalised in ICU, underwent blood transfusion due to anemia and pacemaker battery change but already discharged and looks almost as healthy as a mummified corpse.

Edit: Now apparently re-hospitalised, but already discharged again.

Bad news for those who picked him in Deathrace, Tep Vong is back doing his great supreme patriarch duties but otherwise looks like he died years ago. Image from today.

Tep Vong would not die even if shot at multiple times with antiaircraft gun.

I ignored him after he assured us of his good health in his christmas message. Wrong decision it seems. I guess the Harry and Meghan wedding left him with more brain damage than everyone expected.

I'm surprised they haven't cried racism over him being described as a primate. :evil2:

It could be premature anyway. He has been hospitalized earlier today, seems a bit too soon.

Yes, I'd go with the premature report.  Anyway an IP from Lusaka edited his page before the FB post. I don't really know.

Emmanuel Milingo, still not dead, apparently going to South Korea for "medical checkup".
