Bill Anderson, who played on two NFL championship teams with the Green Bay Packers as part of an eight-year NFL career, has died. He was 80.

Anderson played for the Washington Redskins from 1958-63 and Green Bay from 1965-66. He caught 178 passes for 3,048 yards and 15 touchdowns. The 1965 Green Bay team won an NFL title and the 1966 squad won the first Super Bowl.  Anderson was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1959 and 1960.

Yale Lary, a Lions defensive back, punter and return man who was one of the best football players of the 1950s, has died at the age of 86.

A nine-time Pro Bowler, Lary was an important member of the Lions’ last three championship teams, in 1952, 1953 and 1957.

He was a good one.  RIP

Former Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Michael D. Jackson was killed in a motorcycle crash Friday morning.  A report cites a confirmation from Louisiana State Police that Jackson, who turned 48 in April, was killed in the accident in Tangipahoa.  Jackson was driving his 2013 Kawasaki motorcycle at a “high rate of speed” around 1 a.m. when a 20-year-old woman backed out of a parking spot and into the path of Jackson. He reportedly crashed into the woman’s driver-side door and killed her as well. The investigation into the crash continues.

Jackson, who played eight seasons in the NFL, led the league in receiving touchdowns in 1996.

 

The fantasy football part of me remembers him well, he was a good player to have for a few years.  Oh well.  RIP.

Former Marshall football coach Ulmo “Sonny” Randle died overnight at age 81, according to multiple news reports.

Randle, a 10-year veteran of the NFL with the Chicago/St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, coached the Thundering Herd from 1979-83. He also had stints as a head coach at East Carolina (1971-73) and his alma mater Virginia (1974-75). As Marshall’s head coach, he amassed a five-year record of 12-42-1, his best season coming in his final season, where the Herd went 4-7. Following his coaching career, Randle dove into a second successful career as a broadcaster.

Journeyman tight end Mitchell Henry has cancer.  He's played on practice squads and rode the bench for a few teams, most recently being released by the Baltimore Ravens in December.   On Friday, he took to Twitter asking for support in the form of prayers.

Former NFL punter Rick Tuten died unexpectedly in Costa Rica this week. He was 52. He is survived by his wife Jennifer, son Chase and daughters Kinley and Ryan.  Details of his passing were not immediately available. 

Tuten had an 11-year pro career after playing collegiately at Florida State and Miami, where he won a national championship in 1983.

As a pro, Tuten played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks and St. Louis Rams. Tuten was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1994 as a Seahawk. He finished his career with a 43.4 yards per punt average.

 

This was his final punt.

Frank Kush, the fearsome coach who transformed Arizona State from a backwater football program into a powerhouse, died Thursday. He was 88.

Kush was 176-54-1 with the Sun Devils from 1958 to 1979. His teams won two Border Conference and seven Western Athletic Conference titles.

Arizona State won the Peach Bowl in 1970 and the first three Fiesta Bowls. His 1970 team was 11-0, and the 1975 squad went 12-0, capped by a 17-14 Fiesta Bowl victory over Nebraska, and finished a program-best No. 2 in the country.

In American football, it's an offensive end who lines up close to the tackle. But I agree, it should have a slightly different name.

Only NFL game I ever saw had the commentary line along the lines of  "He got at the tight end right in the end zone."
