DevonDeathTrip 2,358 Posted October 24, 2008 Canadian musician Richard Bell, has died of cancer. He played in Janice Joplin's group and later joined The Band. I wouldn't have mentioned his death if wasn't for the fact that the score is now 3-3 in The Grateful Dead/The Band dead keyboard players series. Bell replaced Stan Szelest who died in 1991. Szelest died suddenly of a heart attack less than a year after joining the re-united group. Ironically, he just had time to pen "To Soon Gone", a heartfelt tribute to his predecessor, Richard Manuel, who hung himself in 1986. A fine goal from The Band but I'm afraid that only gets them back to 4-3, as Pigpen, Keith Godchaux, Brent Mydland and Vince Welnick are all late ivory-ticklers for the most aptly-named band on earth. I'd take my chances on the skins for Spinal Tap before I'd sign up as a Dead keyboard player. The last realistic chance of an equaliser for The Band lies with Garth Hudson, but he's still gigging regularly at 70 and seems on top form. Party on, Garth. It's 5-3 to The Dead!! Merl Saunders scores.

Octopus of Odstock 2,194 Posted October 30, 2008 Two film deaths to report: Delmar Watson, 82, child actor in so many films, including, memorably, Mr Smith Goes To Washington, has died. As has Estelle Reiner, wife of Carl, mother of Rob. Her finest moment...? she was the old lady who stole the scene & one of the most memorable lines of the 1980's when she said "I'll have what she's having" after Meg Ryan's fake orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally. Or, and I can scarcely contain my titters here, Knickerless Butt? I have clicked on the link and it comes up, 'this video is unavailable in your country', which is most frustrating. Was it this by any chance? Some people just go too far . Shouldn't this nonsense be moved to the football thread, and/or those responsible banned for life. maryportfuncity 10,646 Posted November 2, 2008 Richard Carr-Gomm, an obit I came accross after taking myself in hand......honest! Was on airport duty picking up the the elder Voice of Young Maryport at Terminal 3, Heathrow this morning and noticed they stick pages of the Telegraph above the urinals to keep bored slashers amused. They'd thoughfully put this one in plain view and I stayed to read it all, drawing strange looks from others lining up to relieve themselves. Worth a read, a very interesting life.
